Just ran across this excerpt from a report on Dan Tana. It explains some of the Cameron Diaz-Brentford connection reports.

"The trouble with celebrity hangouts is that the night you go there's always a danger you'll get the extras from the daytime soaps or the obscure former tennis pro now coaching the stars. On the evening I go to meet Dan Tana a star-sighting looks unpromising. With only a few regular bar-flies and anonymous families in so far, the photographer is getting twitchy.

'Don't worry,' Dan reassures her. 'Someone will be in.'

Looking at the place, with its bizarre football decorations, and dimly lit booths, the photographer is sceptical. 'It's hard to believe anyone A-list is going to show. What do the stars make of all the soccer paraphernalia anyway?'

'About 25 per cent like football already. The other 75 have had to learn to like it. We get plenty of Brits in here - homesick for football. Sean Connery, Kenneth Branagh. Years ago Rod Stewart was in. I suggested he take up a contract to play for Brentford. He should have accepted. He could have been a real star then.'

Just then Dan raises a hand to acknowledge the arrival of a group of guests.

'Good evening.'

'Hi Dan. How are you?'

'I'm fine.'

'And how are Brentford doing?'

'Right now, they are doing very well thank you. They are top of their division.'

'That's great.'

The person doing the asking is Cameron Diaz. Is she a Brentford fan?

'Why not?' Dan says, before exchanging pleasantries with the rest of the Hollywood contingent of the Brentford fan club - James Woods, Benicio del Toro and Jim Carrey. (Tana remains a Brentford fan, though he resigned from the board in February. In his letter of resignation to club chairman Ron Noades he wrote, 'I cherish 30 years that I have spent with Brentford where I have learnt how to win and how to lose. For the rest of my life I will be a Bees supporter.')

While the photographer takes his pictures, Tana remains steadily himself: polite, natural, relaxed. A little later the barman explains his secret. 'All these stars come to Dan Tana's because of Dan Tana,' he says. 'Sure, the food is good, the atmosphere is good, but this place is about him. I think they know he's a man with a history. Sure, he's one of them; but he's different: he's lived a very different life.

'He knows there's a life beyond Hollywood. Look around. All the other joints in 'L' have signed pictures of stars on their walls. Dan could have a signed picture of just about any star you could name, if he wanted. But apart from that Vega$ poster, he's just got this soccer stuff. He's not obsessed with Hollywood. Sure it's helped him, but it's not the biggest thing in his life. That's why they all come here.' "

This looks very like part of the original article in the Observer which started the claims that Diaz is a Bee.

I'm not surprised. I didn't see the Observer article however. Shame on Bill Keegan!

A similar article ran in the Chronicle last year, and although it is a well known fact that everything written in the Chronny is gospel truth :D :D :D (!!!) I did think the story was based on what sounds like a bit of an urban legend. Especially when a similar story came out about Jack Nicholson.
But I do get a strange kick from the thought of Cameron Diaz strolling into a restaurant and casually enquiring about the Bees latest league position. Or maybe I'm just getting a strange kick from the thought of Cameron Diaz.

Another article from the Evening Standard last year

CAMERON YOU REDS

There are many people you would be surprised to see on the terraces at a Brentford FC game. E.T. and Champion, the Wonder-Horse are fairly near the top of the list, but Cameron Diaz can't be far behind. So you may be surprised to learn that she has been known to frequent matches at the second division side's ground. H-ho yes. Dan Tana, former Brentford FC chairman and owner of the unsurprisingly named Dan Tana's restaurant on Santa Monica Boulevard, counts the Hollywood star among his friends. "Cameron and Drew [Barrymore] are among the ladies who dine here," Tana told The Evening Standard. "Through me they have become fans of Brentford and when I am in London, and they are around, too, it's not unusual for people like [them] to join me on the terraces at Griffin Park." The producer of such Hollywood classics as The Aviator and Twilight Time, Tana moved out to Tinsletown 30 years ago. "He knows everyone from Joe Pesci to Jack Nicholson. And as a result, Brentford FC has a large - if somewhat unlikely following over there," said Brentford FC communications director Peter Gilham.

And if you believe that then I am happy to tell you that I own Tower Bridge and am open to offers.

Note the "people like them" comment not "them".

The only serous "celebrity" that I remember him bringing to Griffin Park was Karl Malden although I was told that Andy Williams turned up once.

abee, you are taking this stuff too seriously. This is pure entertainment gossip and even so, it's more than a year old.

Indeed we shall. Last year we toasted the Bees along with Bee-in-Bonnet while waiting for Aussie Bee to join us for dinner but apparently he fell asleep down in Long Beach and woke up too late to join us. Dan didn't have a lot to say about Noades but what he did say wasn't particularly positive (something about selling his grandmother to make a fast buck, I recall). I first met Dan at the restaurant shortly after I moved out to LA in 1975 - his place was just up the road from my apartment on Doheny Drive and I used to stand at the bus stop two doors down waiting for my bus to UCLA. I went in and introduced myself and he treated me to a couple of black russians (er...they were the "in" drink at the time). Most of the celebrities there were strictly "B" list - people like Robert Stack - mostly because the "A"-list frequented the Palm Restaurant up the road - (I once saw Schwarzenegger in there around 1976, jaw clenched, muscles wobbling, long before he had any megalomaniacal political objectives). Basically the report above is correct - people go there because they like Dan, the bar is friendly, and the food is old fashioned Italian (i.e. fatteningly cheesy with way too much sauce).

If anybody pops into his restaurant could they ask Dan whatever happened to the million pounds he was going to invest in the club in the 70s? We're still waiting and "Where's the million pounds Tana" used to be a favourite shout on the Braemar when things were going wrong, which they tended to do at that time. No hard feelings, I liked Dan Tana and it's nice to have an ex-chairman who could walk down Braemar Road and not get hung from a lamp post.

Dan Tana did very well by the Bees and is still a loyal fan. He's pretty old and deserves to be allowed to enjoy life in tranquility now.

You could drive up Santa Monica Blvd. from the beach in Santa Monica, pass through Beverly Hills until you reach Doheny Drive, and you will see it next to the Troubadour on the left hand side of the road. They have valet parking in front or you could park on the north side of Doheny but watch out for permit parking zones when you're in W. Hollywood.
