Good site at www.soccer-stats.com . If you look back to our one recent season in Div 1 in 1992/93, you can check out the attendances for that season and see we got bigger average crowds than Watford, Charlton (yes, at the Valley), Luton, Tranmere, Barnsley, Bristol Rovers and quite a few more, despite being relegated.
We really blew our long term potential being relegated that year, just as football was becoming more popular. I'm still gutted about it!

Tell me about it. I'd still like to do a long list of unpleasant things to Ray Bigger...

I think most of the crowd potential had - literally - died off by then anyway. As late as the 1970's/early 80's we had a big pool of latent support which had been attracted to the club in its 1930s heyday, but their numbers inevitably diminished over time, leaving us with the hard core.
Most of the 'extra' supporters in 92/3 were away fans. Brook Road, which housed them then, seemed to be packed out for the majority of matches. On the few ocassions when there was only a small travelling support we were down to barely 7,000, even for that vital last home match v Barnsley.
Ray Biggars erratic time keeping (couldn't you just smell a late equaliser that day?) wouldn't have mattered if it hadn't been for that gutless last day performance at Bristol City. I'm sure its been well covered here in the past but never before or since have I been so ashamed of a Bees side. 35 years of hard work thrown away in the half hour it took to concede the first 3 goals.....

If we went up in the near future we would struggle to get many more fans, in 98/99 we were getting not much fewer than the previous 3 seasons.
