1963/1964 unbelievable. The 'real' Division 3.
Crystal Palace 1-0 Brentford 11-01-1964
Brentford 2-1 Crystal Palace 07-09-1963
Weird. You'd think we would have bumped into each other more recently.
I'm sure there are Bees fans on here old enough to remember all this stuff. :p

Remember 1980? ish friendly. Fighting on the Ealing Road end.
My mates first ever football game ended with a broken nose for him so I didn't get to see the match.
Massive punch up also at the Royal Oak at Ealing Broadway.

They were after revenge for being run on the pitch out of the "oak" in the league cup 77/78.
Shame we run them out of the "oak" again in this so-called friendly:box:
Pity that ****er n@ades didnt stand on the terraces with them.

You're not wrong. I'd wager there's a few teams like Palace that we haven't met for ages. Here's three I've found for starters:
Nottingham Forest: League Cup in 1982/83 & the old 2nd Division in 1953/54.
Wimbledon: The old 3rd Division in 1983/84. Roll on next season!
Coventry City: The old 3rd Division in 1963/64.

Millen's testimonial game I think, didn't he then almost immediately jump ship to Watford?
I remember both Palace cup ties very well but my abiding memory is travelling home after the 5-1 defeat at Selhurst Park. It was pouring with rain and we heard on the radio that Elvis had died. Quite an evening!

Rudolph remembers the Palace cup game. They came into the Oak via the pitch at about five past two, the ten of us up there had to run down to the Paddock. The funny thing was seeing that bloke with the round red face trying to charge them all 5p to transfer round to continue the chase. Sorry but the ten of us had to get on our toes as being outnumbered by so many would have been silly to stand.
The Oak trembled to that familiar sound of rumbling at about ten to three and the Palace fans got a good hiding. They sought refuge in the New Road only to get sussed out there and were on the receiving end during the game there too.
Rudolph also remembers the Mentals coming out on top at Selhurst too as the then Loopy End had a go.
Ahh memories.

We played Wimbledon more recently than that in a pre-season as well, losing 0-4 a few years back.
They had just come down from the top flight and on the strength of that game, looked a good bet to go straight back up.
They had David Connolly and Neil Shipperly up front who looked a deadly partnership.
The rest, as they say, is history.
I do remember the friendly with Tamer Fernandes in goal though.
It was a few years before the match mentioned above, and if I remember rightly was the occasion of the infamous incident when he managed to kick the ball back into his own net from a free kick/goal kick.
The goal was disallowed because the ball had not travelled out of the area, or something.

The Palace cup game was one big ruck and some of the worst crowd scenes reported at GP.
Palace were run out of the Oak and about 300 stood in the New road where they were steamed from behind and had to take refuge on the pitch.
The Ealing Gazette (a decent brentford paper at the time) reported that harry Greenaway was disgusted with the scenes and called for Brentford fans to be fenced in

I was standing on the Royal Oak about five minutes from kick off thinking what a shame it was that these south Londoners had taken our end without a struggle when from the New Road side of the Oak a great mob came steaming across and the Palarse mob were forced to leg it onto the pitch. To be honest I think there was a bit of support from Chelsea on the day, bit like the Watford game a few seasons before. Palace fans were pushed into the corner of the New Road but the same thing happened again although they stood their ground this time. I know this sort of thing is in vogue nowadays what with that film and all but on the whole the Royal Oak was always defended well and I can remember only Sheffield Wednesday and Gillingham remaining there for a whole match.

Millwall did the first time they came in many years, but as Mr Wise Old Bee says, on the main the Oak was defended well.
