My laptops ****ed and I'm missing you all

When I try to coonect to the internet, my Pc cant detect a dial tone. I took it in for repair and it aledgedly worked ok.

I mentioned the problem in a nother shop and they reckon that there was a power surge in the hayes area which has reuined a lot of modems (although thye appear to be working OK) They want £15 to daignose the problem And then money on top for the repair - a new modem.

Anybody know what else i can do, i dont want to get ripped off

in the modem settings under control panel there is an option not to wait for a dial tone, you coyld try this. Have you tried it in a different socket or a different cable? Perhaps even at someone elses house.

Have you tried plugging the phone into the slot you are using for the computer. At least then you will know if there is a dialing tone although I had a similar problem and changed the cable and a new modem when BT came along and said there was an intermittent faullt on my line.

You could also try querying the modem, how to do it varies a bit but dependant on your operating system but on XP for example:

Control Panel
Phone and Modem Options
Modems
Properties
Diagnostics
Query Modem

You should get back a list of commands and the responses, if you don't or it's full of failures then it could suggest a faulty modem.

You could also try re-installing the modem, again how to do this will depend on operating system, if you are not sure how tell me the operating system you are using and I can assist.

If the modem is not at fault it other possibilities could be:

Motherboard (unlikely)
BIOS issue (again unlikely unless you have changed something recently)
Modem cable
Phone line

As beebop has already suggested plug a phone into the line and check it works, if you have the luxury of a second phone line or can take the laptop to another location then try that to.
If you have recently had changes made to your phone (such as adding call waiting or one of the other BT services) it is possible that is causing a problem as well.

Cheers

Thanks for all of the advice,

there is only one phone socket and the telephone works

I have two cables both of which I know worked.

The computer cable connects to the phone socket by an adapter and i have bought a new one of those in desperation but to no avail.

I have sked the laptop to check the modem and it has said that it is OK.

I have asked my modem not to wait for a dial tone and it just keeps redialling.

I'll try the laptop on somebody elses phone socket to see if there is any differene.

Its so frustrating.....

I had similar problems. I had to remove the modem every time I shut down. Modems in Control panel then delete it. When you turn it on again it reinstalls it and it works. I had to keep doing this though. Might be worth a shot.

Have you done a virus scan? I'm pretty sure my modem has been screwed around with recently (was a ****ing auto-dialer and wasted £3 on my phone bill), still no dial tone to be heard but connects to the internet. Something could be hijacking your modem, removing that and reinstalling the modem as Carri Bee Un suggests could do it.

I coulkdn't delete my modem from the control panel as Carri Bee Un suuugested but i think i did delete it eventually, I restarted my laptop and an icon came out saying hat it had found new hardware ( Iprseume my deleted modem) but still no joy.

I've got to get it sorted as now my mum is siding with my wife sayiong that I'm spending to much time on here

go to control panel. Phone and modem options. Go to the modems tab and then select your modem from the list and click properties. Select the diagnostics tab and hit the query modem button. Do you get any response?

Seems the modem is alive then. On the modem tab (the one to the left of diagnostics) there is a box that is ticked wait for dial tone. Untick this and try.

Does sound like the modem is broken. Is it internal? Is the laptop under warranty? What is the make and model? I'll take it and have a look if you want?
