I am busy saving for a home internet PC set up. Is there a way of avoiding running cables from the telephone socket to where I want to put the PC in my house.
If yes - how much will it cost?

Yes
Move the telephone socket to where you want the PC.

You'll need a wireless broadband gateway to connect to your phoneline and a wireless adapter card in your PC.

Paulo - I could get the BT extension cable and run it through a couple of doors and along the skirting from the hall, but I had hoped I could get some sort of cableless option, which gives me more options if the missus is fed up with me watching porn.

Maybe you could find cheaper if you shop around, but if you go to http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=F5D7630&pm=877 you could get a wireless DSL router for £64 + VAT, a wireless PCI card for your PC for £23 + VAT and microfilters at £4 a piece (you'll need 1 for each telephone socket you have got). So the rough answer to your question is just under £100 + VAT is the cheapest you'll be able to do.

  I'm confused. So for a wireless network (sharing internet - 2 computers & occasional laptop) I will need:
Wireless Router
Wireless network cards in each PC
Splitters for phone point.
Is that everything?
I've seen wireless routers from about £50 to much more, does it make any massive difference as to which you buy?
Thanks anyone who can help

As long as the router contains a DSL/Cable modem (or you've already got one) you've got it. The more expensive routers will have a better range and maybe higher speeds but as long as you're not planning on moving huge files around you'll be fine with the lower speeds. Although it's not all that more expensive to go for the faster stuff.

I thought this said Calebless for a second and got worried :D
The pricing will depend on how many PC's you're hooking up, though spending £100 odd on a wireless linkup seems a lot, wouldn't it be better to just get some tacks and put the wire along the skirting boards?

Any chance of an idiots guide to security when using wireless networks to connect to the internet? Am I right in thinking you need to do some kind of data encryption key thingy? Firewall, virus checker etc on both PCs but I read something about how other people can "hijack" your connection & connect through it from their computer?

You can use WEP or WPA security depending on your kit, most new stuff can generate it's own keys i think. You can probably also set your wireless router so that it will only allow your devices to connect using the MAC addresses. Anti Virus is still required on all machines and a firewall is still reccomended even though the router will act as a barrier between you pcs and the outside world..
