lazyvalue - Grey Abbey 20 January 2005
We're 8 weeks away from what looks a strong Cheltenham Gold Cup although doubts surround some of the principals. Favourite, Best Mate has been under the weather after his Irish defeat by Beef or Salmon although it seems nothing serious and there's every likelihood his trainer will have him spot on for the big day. However, this will be his toughest Gold Cup and only one horse has won more than three - Golden Miller back in the 1930s.
His Leopardstown conqueror, Beef or Salmon, 2nd fav for the Gold Cup, can be a frustrating horse to follow although there's no doubting his talent when everything goes his way jumping-wise, and on the right ground. The going in Ireland was very demanding and Best Mate fans will be confident of turning the form around at Cheltenham.
We believe Kicking King is the form horse in the Gold Cup but trainer Taaffe stubbornly refuses to commit to running until much closer to race day. Our guess is that he'll run in the Gold Cup but doubts over his stamina in some circles means his price probably won't shorten much from the current 10/1 in the run-up (although likely to be considerably shorter come race day)
The value horse at the moment, for our money, is Grey Abbey at 25/1. This Howard Johnson trained 11 year-old has won 13 of his 38 runs, garnering £215,000 in prize money.
He's always been a good horse, but had almost a year off the course in 2003. The break appears to have improved him considerably.
His first run back was in the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham last January. He was 40/1 and finished last, 39 lengths behind Crystal D'ainay but ran well. Next time he won an 18 runner H'cap Hurdle under 11st 7.
Back over fences next he gave Royal Auclair 5lbs and a 10 length beating then went on to win the Scottish Grand National carrying 11st 12. Irish National winner, Granit D'Estruval was upsides when falling at the last that day but was in receipt of almost 2 stones from Johnson's horse.
His next run was in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby at the end of October where he showed further improvement to beat Sir Rembrandt (who finsihed second in last year's Gold Cup) 3 lengths. A strict interpretation of this form line gives Grey Abbey the beating of Best Mate and Beef or Salmon.
We wouldn't argue that this interpretation is 100% reliable but even the most casual view of it tells you Grey Abbey is well over-priced at 25s.
Howard Johnson hasn't committed to the Gold Cup yet for his horse (he's also entered in the Grand National). But he plans to run him in the Pillar Chase at Cheltenham on January 29th where he'll meet a number of Gold Cup fancies.
If he wins that (which he'd have every chance of doing) we'd expect him to run in the Gold Cup and we'd be certain that the 25/1 would immediately become just a happy memory for some and a self-flagellating cudgel for those who'd missed the price.
Grey Abbey jumps superbly, stays any distance, battles like a Ghurka and goes on any ground. He's far too big at 25s for the Gold Cup.
lazyvalue - Rule Supreme 19 January 2005
Rule Supreme - is as low as 11/2 for the World Hurdle at Cheltenham and no higher than 7s with every bookmaker except Cashmans who offer a startling, lip-smacking, 10/1.
Rule Supreme runs regularly over hurdles and fences and he won the Sun Alliance Chase at Cheltenham last year. He's a better horse over hurdles as his fencing can be a bit novicey at times and his trainer has stated that he very much favours running him in the World Hurdle (former Stayers Hurdle) rather than the Gold Cup.
And so he should run there. His final run last season won him the French Champion Hurdle over 26 furlongs. On his first run this season he won a hurdle in desperate ground carrying 11.12, giving 2st 8lbs to the runner-up (an almost unheard-of weight concession these days).
He then ran 3rd to Solerina over a trip well short of his ideal before coming over to Windsor for the Long Walk Hurdle where he'd have beaten the World Hurdle favourite and second favourite Baracouda and Crystal D'Ainay with 50 yards more to run. The track didn't suit him at all, he made mistakes, got checked more than once when seeking a run and was flying at the finish.
He then reverted to fences in the Lexus chase and was running a big race when falling at the second last behind Beef or Salmon and Best Mate
Cheltenham's galloping track and long straight uphill finish will suit him to a T. And we think he's a fantastic bet at 10/1. Cashmans are on 00353 214 271770 (www.cashmans.ie)

2.50 Fabrezan - i think anything over 2/1 is great value for this C&D winner (RPF 9/4). 2nd
3.20 Silver Inngot - RP naps it at 7/4, reckon the price will be nearer evens. :(
Southwell
1.10 Amanda's Lad @ 16/1 - great e/w chance today. 3rd @ 8/1
2.40 Bunkhouse @ 33/1 e/w - price maybe shorter than RP forecast... Reckon it's got a great chance of the frame today :(
3.10 Indian Steppes > 10/1 e/w - out of the handicap by 7lbs, but the RP price of 16/1 is far to generous in the 8 runner race (4 horses out of handicap thanks to Hidden Dragon :blush it won (who won't win)) 3rd @ 10/1
Warwick
2.30 Moldavia > 12/1 e/w- big RP price for this horse. smaller price no bet (prob) :D. :(
3.00 Dangerousdanmagru @ 33/1 - if this was an 8 runner race, then it's my e/w bet of the day, however only 7 run and it's prob not taking the risk with Figaru De Roche the probable winner.
3.30 Keepers Mead > 9/2 - strange one this race, very open but Keepers Mead is great value, but may not even make the frame, but is also more than capable. this is my ooooh errrr wait to see what the markets do type of bet... ie leave alone lol xxxxxxxxxxxxx
BotD (win Silver Inngot)
BotD (e/w Indian Steppes - 7 run, watch for NRs) 10/1 3rd
