Football fashions

A friend of mine, Paolo Hewitt, is currently in the research phase of writing a book about the link between fashion and football down the years. The worst football fashion I can remember is the silk scarves of the early 1970s. They were nasty.

Crombies and Harringtons were all the rage on the Royal Oak in my teenage years. Can anyone remember when wearing team shirts started? It was rare to see anyone wearing one in the late sixties/early seventies yet today at least half the crowd turn out in them.

Paolo Hewitt wrote that book about Reading's Robin Friday a few years ago which was a bit of a scissors and glue job but a decent read all the same. It didn't surprise me to find in it that Friday was a West London boy who was passed over by Brentford, along with Regis, Devonshire etc.

He's Paul's best mate. Originally wrote for Melody Maker and then the NME in the early Eighties.

Their both from Woking and the Jam played down my local when they were just starting.
