If you want value-for-money, stay away from the chain shops like PC World and Dixons.
You'd probably be better off going to an online firm. Try www.evesham.com or www.meshcomputers.com for starters. Both are large mail-order companies. There are tons of smaller ones which may be better value if you know what you're looking for.
However, if all you need a PC for is surfing regular websites (and not want to download lots of music and video), you could probably pick up a much better deal if you ask around for a second-hand model.

You can try the Dell Outlet which sells refurbished returned PCs and offers excellent prices backed by a one year warranty. For example a laptop for £550 + VAT.

If you're around the Tottenham Court Road area during the day there are lots of shops around selling cheap refurbished models, and some sales have already started. The cheapest, such as one placard ad for £199 computers will be just about useful for the net and office only though.
