It's great, is this :D I'm on my laptop surfing the web through someone else's wireless network... fantastic!

Why aren't they stopping me being able to do this?

Because quite a lot of the wireless network software seems to be defective so that its password protection doesn't work! Or because your neighbour is a doofus...

Maybe they left it open on purpose. http://www.consume.net/

It's unlikely to be the first one,if you've got a decent system. It's more likely to be the second:when you set up your wireless account, there is an option to encrypt it,meaning put a password on it,and this will stop people like Wee Dave going on your internet.Strongly recommended for anyone who hasn't done it on theirs.

I leave my access point open on purpose - I've told the neighbours if they want to use it that's fine - if it starts to affect my surfing/downloads to any great extent I'll change it but I haven't had a problem yet.

If your broadband is an unlimited one why not share it?

I was getting 11mb/s wireless net connection from somewhere for a while, but the connection has gone now. I think it might have been the university, looking at the whois on the IP address, but seeing as I'm a couple of miles from the main buildings, and there's nothing like an antenna where I have my room, it confused me.

Here's a screenshot for a NetGear router that supports the WPA standard:

WPA networks require a password -- sometimes called a passphrase or Pre-Shared Key (PSK) -

I'm not on wireless at the moment, when it goes up I will have them two APs on seperate subnets so people can use it to connect but there'll be no way for them into my lan.
