really need help on this one guys:
basically, the problem started a few months ago, where it happened perhaps once a month, but now it's occuring more and more frequently. basically:
sometimes i get serveral system warnings saying that certain IE files aren't being saved properly whilst on the net. sometimes the computer goes straight into a blue screen saying " stop c000007b unknown hard error, beginning dump of physical memory" and then the computer freezes and i have to manually shut down. or it just freezes and i have to manually shut down
then i restart and windows xp checks its file systems, windows verifying the deisk verifying files and folders. sometimes the percentage count gets to 5 and then stops and after you wait a while it looks as if it'll let you log on but actually feeds you lots of error messages saying certain files didn't save properly. and you have to go through the rigmorole until one of the below 2 happens
sometimes it replaces bad clusters and carries on as normal
sometimes it just carries on as normal.
then the system starts, but the same problem occurs after a short while.
initially i thought it was a registry problem although i don't get error messages of that type any more.
i have all the security measures of hack it logs i.e firewall, registry checker, antivirus, spyware, adaware, crap cleaner and so on and my system is clean.
wondering if any of you computer bods could throw any light on this.
(have an ibm thinkpad T23)
cheers in advance.

Bad clusters makes it sound like your hard disk is on it's way out.
Any interesting errors in the event logs around the time this happens (you can get to the event log by Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Log). You probably won't see much of note in the security log but see what occurs in the System and Application logs.
If you see the same errors occurring regularly you can check what they actually mean at www.eventid.net with links to relevant Microsoft knowledge base articles on how to fix them.

Backup your data
If you can try a re-install of Windows
Prepare to fork out for a new hard drive or new laptop

right the system file has lots of errors
1. pop up error, couldn't locate driver therefore reinstall program. don't know which program
2. more frequent. "{Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file . The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
No help available on this one
3. lots and lots. "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation. it suggests An input/output (I/O) request to a memory-mapped file failed and the operation was retried." and "If these events are logged regularly on a primary system drive, replace the device. Otherwise, no user action is required."
so tell me the news: is the computer stuffed? if so, how hard is it to change the hardware on a laptop considering i am a complete computer numb nuts.
cheers once again

these are: windows unable to save all the data for the files
c:\windows\debug\usermode\userenv.log
c:\windows\internet logs
c:\windows\internet logs\fwpktlog.txt
c:.
c\windows\system32
c\windows\system32\config\appevent.ewt
and data will be lost
and
I\O operation initiated by reg. failed unrecoverably. reg could not read in, or write out, or flush one of the files that contain the systems image of reg.
hope this doesn't bugger up the computer so i can't listen to the game tomorrow :(

It does sound like your HDD is on it's last legs. As for changing it it depends on the design but you can usually get to the HDD reasonably easily but your local PC repair shop would be able to help.

sadly i'm in poland. now it's not that i don't trust computer geeks in this country, it's that i've seen them set about fixing a computer before with a machete. i'll see if i can get one sent in from the UK. they can't be that hard to change (famous last words).

Have a look on the IBM website abd see if you can find a service manual for your machine, or alternately try to google it.

hard drive should be very easy to change. It might already be an a removable caddy that you can slide out.

A mate has a Thinkpad T40 their HD failed so they bought another 2.5" drive and fitted it but then the new drive wouldn't be recognised. The machine was secondhand and didn't have any disks with it and the warranty ran out about a month before the failure. We tried booting from an Ubuntu Live CD x86 version but with no luck. From what I've been able to dig up online it seems that the Thinkpad requires a separate partition of some sort on the HD with a system already on it, which the replacement drive clearly doesn't have. When we discovered this I hoped that the fact we were installing Ubuntu would mean that this wasn't required but it seems that perhaps it is. Does anyone know of a keyboard incantation which will kick the T40 into recognising that it has a new HD to deal with?

Is the hard drive recognised in the BIOS? You should be able to press F1 to get into the BIOS setup.

Tried F1 at boot but that didn't seem to do anything. When turning on with the HD removed the IBM splash screen is displayed but with the HD in place the screen is blank, not even a blinking cursor.

What does it do with the old drive in there?
coconino

With the old drive in place it displays the splash screen but also sounds an alert tone. Unfortunately I'm not near the machine for a couple of days so can't check the exact details of what happens, but the original disk failed after a month or so of trouble. The machine's owner got their data off and ran diagnostics which indicated imminent failure, and sure enough it failed shortly after.
Thanks for taking the trouble to help, by the way :sorted:

No problem, has the new drive been proved good in another machine? Are there any jumpers on it that may need to be changed some laptops are funny about the way they need drives setup?
