finally had broadband ordered last week, and yesterday the modem arrived.
unfortunately its AOL again :(
anyway, it seemed to be installed ok, but it doesnt actually work. i can only connect to the normal dial up version, and i really dont know what i'm talking about, so i'm going to shut up and hope some smart person can help me!

Your big mistake was to choose AOL. The best thing you can do to solve the problem is to switch to a proper ISP.

However, usually the modem arrives a while before BT activates your line.

i was speaking to the support guys on the phone a while earlier, and even though i wasn't connected to the internet, i had an odd tone all the way through the conversation, and he was rattling on about sockets or something

You should have a "microfilter" in the pack. If not go and buy one from Dixons. Then plug it in your phone socket.

How many phone sockets have you got in your house? You'll need one microfilter/splitter for each socket in your house otherwise you won't be able to connect via broadband and you will hear the funny noise in the background when you use the phone. The good news is they are dirt cheap, they shouldn't be more than £1-2 each.

...and normally once connected, you get lights on the external modem indicating if it's connected with green/red lights.

at the moment on the ex. modem, the power light is lit, the DSL light is flashing, and the data light is doing nothing

the DSL light should stay on once connected, and the data light will be effective when recieving info. via the modem email/internet sites...

buy one from Dixons.
Or preferably anywhere but Dixons! And you only need one per phone plugged in, you don't need one for unused sockets.

but how do i know if my line has been activated?

Create a new network connection (Start>Control Panel>Network Connections then File>New Connection from the menu)

Try to connect using the username bt_test@startup_domain and a blank password. If it authenticates try to browse to http://www.bt.net/digitaldemo - if you see it your line is up and running :sorted:

When I posted the £1-2 price range I'd just checked the PC world website which I assumed wouldn't exactly be the cheapest place in the world to buy them.
