We knew it all along, of course! But MOTD viewers will have noticed that Smithy turned in another good one for Southampton.
He may have had problems dealing with us last week, but he had Cole, Henry and co. dealt with throughout.
Heaps of praise from Hansen and Schmeichel. He was described as "the difference between the two sides."
There better be a decent sell-on clause in place.

I feel that if Saints stay up and PS stays in then there is a fair chance that he will be in the England set-up within 12 months. (And I am not joking).

I am not in the least bit surprised. We all knew that Smithy was something special. Despite the fact that we need to get the ball past him on Tuesday, I am confident he will get a fantastic reception.

What a thought! I suppose a year ago Robert Green was a young English keeper largely unheralded but who is now in or around the England squad, so why not Smith? Presumably Smithy's chance depends on either Man Utd or Arsenal deciding to buy Niemi.
Schmeichel called it the best goalkeeping performance he has seen this season, I think. Praise indeed!

Disagree. I think it depends on Man Utd or Arsenal wanting to buy him. :D

I know the £500k fee we agreed is made up of lots of add ons, appearances etc. In regards to the international caps bit was it specified as England caps or just international caps? What if Paul has an Irish granny? Will we get any money?
Is there an add on in regards to a percentage of any future transfer fee? If so, what percentage?

yesterday was a make or brake game for smithy, and i have to say he rose to the test and proved exactly the type of player he is,
if he plays like that against arsenal, whats he going to bee like if he plays against us? his confidence is going to bee sky high.

Yay Smithy - top bloke. I hope he goes on to bigger and better things and hauls us a shiteload of wonga in the process. Except on Tuesday, of course, when I hope he breaks his ****ing legs :) ;)

A few more performances like that and Saints will be pushed to keep him. Quite a few PL goalkeeping vacancies coming up this summer and it wouldn't surprise me if a bigger club than Saints got their hands on him. Some of the recent foreign imports have not done the business.
With Kirkland seemingly always injured , Green's star fading an England cap is not out of the question if he gets the break.

To be honest I have no idea, however I think Smith has more chance of playing for England than Ireland.
Shay Given (and possibly Dean Kiely) are better keepers than anything England have.

High praise indeed and I hope Paul achieves everything he wants to in the game, one helluva nice bloke :sorted:
Hopefully the respect shown at St Marys by us fans towards him will continue tomorrow night - be nice if the only goal of the game was a wicked deflection that he could do absolutely nothing about as we proceed on to ManUre :bound:

He has retired from International scene.

He has retired from International scene.
Well there might be a vacancy for a number 2 then, he's better than Paddy Kenny.
Any English goalkeeper playing in the Premiership has a chance of playing for England, due to lack of numbers.
That cash for an international cap may not be out of the question  rofl

As well as Smith has played since he came in (and he did indeed have a blinder on Sat and even Niemi wouldn't have been able to do anything about the goal) he will lose that spot as soon as Niemi is fit.
And with good reason, Niemi is quite simply superman and is a match winner for us on so many occassions, he has often pulled off the seemingly impossible (as did Smith with an outstretched foot on Sat) and is possibly the best keeper I have ever seen play, if he was at Chelsea he'd probably have kept as many clean sheets as Cech.
Smith isn't likely to get too many appearances when Niemi is fit, but Niemi has been struggling with injuries of late and Smith is taking his chance well.
In defence of the pro 'David Coles' comments on the Saints messageboard, he is a well respected coach and Niemi himself has credited Coles with his excellent form... and Niemi was already a well respected international keeper before he joined us.
