Does anybody have one? I am thinking of switching from my 35mm SLR to digital. The Nikon D70 is now only $800 in the US (400 quid) and seems like a great deal. Are the SLRs any good though? Or does film still give a better result?

I've used both a D70 and the Canon EOS300D (now replaced by the 350D).

Both give remarkably similar results. The 300D has a good second battery grip available as an option for around $80 which gives you more duration if you are for example shooting at sporting events or the like. Build quality seems similar on both, with the Nikon feeling a little 'chunkier'.

Digital is convenient and with Photoshop you can soften the images a bit to get really good quality.

There is still somethingto be said though for 35mm film, especially as the good hardware is now so cheap. The problem however is 'lifetime cost'.

Specialist 35mm film stock (such as black and white at fast speeds) is becoming more difficult to obtain (Ilford went into administration for example).

Most pros now use digital so I guess it's the way ahead. Still love my Canon T90 though and am loathe to get rid of it.

My missus is a photographer.

Reckons the results from newer digital SLR's are comparable to film. However she can tell the difference still. I can't.
