ok following on from that link on the Marcus Gayle site with all past Brentford players since the 60's i decided to make up what i think might have been the best brentford team, this is my effort
G: Paul Smith
LB: Martin Grainger
RB: Ivar Ingimarsson (could play RB - who has been better?)
CB: Jamie Bates
CB: Herman Hreidersson
LW: Marcus Gayle (1st time round!)
RW: Paul Merson (Loans do count!)
CM: Martin Rowlands
CM: Stan Bowles (Apparently he could play a bit)
CF: Dean Holdsworth
CF: Gary Blissett

No Hurlock, Sinton or Smillie?
Around a year ago there was a thread on this with a good few contributions. Not sure I remember anyone voting for Marcus then.
Merson was promising with us, but didn't do nearly enough in those few games to warrant a place in an all-time Bees team (even if only from mid 80s when he played) based on his performances for us

Best Brentford team ever never I can go back over 50 years but we have been at GP 100 so we cannot do that, best in the last 40 years ok but remember the individuals you pick may not make a team.
Teams or squads are interesting Fred Callaghans team
Phil Holder
David Webbs
Ron Noades?
Steve Coppell
to me its Freds or Steve's

My "better than Bates" list, going back to early 70s would include - at least - Gelson, Kruse, McNichol, Millen, Evans, Ashby, Hreidarsson, Ingimarsson, Powell, Sonko, Sodje and Turner. Jamie gave the club good service and tried hard on the pitch, but he was never one of the greats: McLintock, Perryman and Holder all consistently picked Millen + Evans ahead of him

i had bates as pure heart and soul towards the club and a great skipper. you could argue the same for ron "chopper" harris but i would still pick him.
i did think about, but then completly refused to put in any of the Gillingford tribe

 Harris and Whitehead with Wilkins at the back were the only reason that side din't win the old 1st Division ( now the Prem) and the FA Cup with certain European glory thrown in.
Bates, the boy did good but that good?

I have always rated the Callaghan/Harris side as one of the best ever at GP and that is a saying a great deal for a side that was never promoted. it was one of the first Brentford sides that won away from home fairly regularly and but for the injury to Mahoney would have gone up I'm sure. As well as bringing in players like Hurlock and Crown, Fred even got the best out of Paul Walker. Shame it all ended in tears, but then it usually does at GP.
