I don't know if this has come up on another thread, and I suspect that it is a pie in the sky idea, but, having heard on the radio this morning that Elton John is doing a concert to raise funds for Watford FC, is there any possibility that Rick, who used to be associated with the BFC years ago (wasn't he a director?), would contemplate a similar idea for the Bees?
I don't even know if he still has any interest in the club, and he obviously wouldn't be quite as high profile an attraction as EJ, but, if he was interested in the idea, he might just be able to persuade a few of his old rock friends to perform for free as well.
Alternatively, could Rhino Edwards persuade Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt to get the Quo to perform for free - now that WOULD attract quite a few people.
Just an idea, like

Rick now lives on the Isle of Man and is a Man City fan.
The idea of him performing was discussed and discounted on other threads.
Quo rockin' the GP, now, that would be cracking!!

Thanks for that, Nigel. How the hell, tho', can someone not living in Manchester change his allegiance to Man City?! Especially an ex-Bees fan!
Perhaps he DID live in Manchester for a while or perhaps his other half is Man City supporter???

Rick's ok when getting a freebee of Noades for the playoff final. But when it comes to helping the club out, NO THANKS. Wakemans no more a fan of the bees than I am of Noades.

Watching "The Kumars at No.42",their guest one Elvis Costello admitted to being a Houndslow boy.Now that would be a draw especially if his wife performed as well.

A Night in Paris, a Night in Brentford, what's the difference?

Rhino has been approached; he has been and remains very helpful. We were investigating possibilities re this summer, not necessarily at GP but possibly elsewhere within close proximity of GP.
Quo are doing a free gig in town this year to celebrate their latest landmark anniversary, but the main issue is that bands are tied up to managemnet deals/contracts and its difficult to really press the right buttons unless "well connected" ( which i`m certainly not ;-) ).
LBE and LBH were both approached to ascertain support levels. Of course both were "supportive"; ie come back to us with concrete proposals.
Suggestions were made re summer `06 and who knows, maybe something can be put together. Support has been "intimated" by some big names but these were put to me a on a "confidential basis" as those people needed to go through their management teams, so less likely than likely IMHO.
re Rick Wakeman - he too has been approached, been contacted and proved relatively positive - but refer to paragraph above.
A big event at GP or a local park is possible (if underwritten) but frankly it needs to be taken seriously and properly supported from top to bottom at BFC, because volunteers will only get you so far.
The Live Aid documentary last night was fascinating IMHO, exposing egos etc in the music business. We come across this on a miniature scale sometimes even when dealing with gigs/bands at Stripes so to put on anything "big" is a huge task......it needs a big team of people all pulling in the same direction.
I was told by a BFC Director to stop spending so much time on it as there was no support where it mattered, so I took his advice and promptly decreased my mobile phone bills

Thanks PJ........really interesting.
Was the BFC director who suggested that you stop spending so much time on "it" referring to Stripes or to possible bigger concerts.......
.........and I didn't follow the "no support where it really mattered"...... bit........did he mean in the BFC boardroom???

Pete, I reckon Live Aid was a doddle compared to the last Stripes Community Music Showcase! :D

I have recordings of Mr. Costello stating that he doesn't want to go to Chelsea.
That's a good sign, isn't it??

Fair point lol :sorted:

1. Was the BFC director who suggested that you stop spending so much time on "it" referring to Stripes or to possible bigger concerts.......
2. .........and I didn't follow the "no support where it really mattered"...... bit........did he mean in the BFC boardroom???
1. He was referring to trying to sort out a "big" event.
2. It was "cleared" by the board; ie see if you can get something to put on the table. By "support where it mattered" I mean in practical terms; ie someone to mercilessly drive it forward.
As BeeH said some months back....to get something like that really moving needs virtually full-time attention, ideally with either or both LBE and LBH jumping on board and sharing the risks.
In terms of figures quoted by agents and band`s managers, some of those were mind numbing - and they were for bands/artists whose best days were behind them, although they would probably still have pulled a decent crowd. But the figures didnt stack up and obviously we only wanted to put forward a "low risk" proposal before seeking a team of people to underwrite the costs

Having attended the Elton John gig at Vicarage Rd on Saturday, I must say that the same idea crossed my mind as well. Status Quo would be great and we would probably pack out Griffin Park. However, the concert programme described the incredible organisation that went into making the evening the success that it was. Even architects were employed to help modify a football stadium into something that was suitable for a rock concert.
The concert raised £1.3m which Elton John said he wanted spending on players. And he said he would return for another gig when he was 60 - I make that two years.
If only it was possible for Brentford!

Rhino does read the GPG from time to time, so you never know..........
