Who should go to Germany.............who should book a summer holiday.............who should be in the World Cup Squad.

The World Cup is getting closer and my thoughts are starting to turn to who should be in the world cup squad.

I think the starting XI more or less picks itself now, but a few spots are up for grabs. The back up left back for example.......at the moment seems like Konchesky and Bridge are the most likely, but what does everyone think about Matthew Taylor. He always looks impressive despite playing in a very poor Portsmouth side. If he was at a bigger club i'm sure he would have had his chance by now.

Does anyone think Kevin Nolan or Nigel Reo-Coker are worth a try in friendlies, and what about the better Ferdinand, Anton??

I can't see Taylor getting a go, he is better as a wide midfield player.

Central midfield players will have to excel in the next few months to get a go. I do think there is a space for a good holding player, Parker should be top of the list.

I think the fourth striker place is up for grabs, Defoe and Bent are ahead of the game but a good run from anyone could get them on the plane.

IMHO we should be looking at our second and third choice keepers, they aren't good :(

I believe so, 3 of which are goalkeepers.

I'm sure its 23. Apart from Robinson quality goalkeepers are and issue. Green will go to the World Cup but he is hardly pulling up trees for Norwich at the moment. He should have gone to a Premiership club. No-one has established themselves as number 2 yet................James is number 2 thats for sure ;) :D

Possible players in frame for call ups: Kirkland, Vassell, D. Bent

Nolan could be worth a run in a friendly but his position is the most covered position England have and will miss out. Anton is a good bet, IMO :sorted:

First 11 is obvious, subject to injury: Robinson, Neville, Ferdinand, Terry, A Cole, Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard, J Cole, Rooney and Owen

Pretty sure to go as reserves are: James, Young, King, Carragher, Defoe

Leaves 7 places: I'd pick Green, Bridge, Wright-Phillips, Carrick, Parker, Downing and D Bent

However I think Sven might take an extra centre-half (Campbell if back to form), treating King as a back-up midfielder, Jenas and/or Dyer might slip in, and he'll probably take Crouch ahead of Bent

if Kirkland could play 5 games in a row...

if Vassell could finish....

they'd have a chance

personally, i think Crouch has leapfrogged Defoe in the queue, and it is more of a duel between Defoe and Bent for the 4th spot...

i think Jenas has had a good season and should go  Downing will need to prove he's rediscovered his form to have a chance, hasn't played well for a long time (but has been injured for a lot of that), and we don't NEED a back-up left winger with Cole and Bridge able to play in tandem and the versatility of our midfielders....

again, personally i'd take Etherington in front of Downing anyway

i would have thought he would have liked an attacking/creative midfield option on the bench

If Dyer keeps injury free and in the team until the end of season, he'll be up against Wright-phillips, i believe

Couldn't agree more.

Defoe didn't do enough when picked then lost his place to Keane at Spurs, not WC form :nono:

Crouch will never score enough goals but he is a 'different' option.

Different in this case being a bit like 'special' ;)

If both are fit, both will probably go. You need these types of players to break down the best defences.

I doubt we'll take a natural left winger, unless Downing or Etherington can produce a great run of form.

Against the better teams we'll play a holding midfield player and Gerrard will move to the left.

Has anyone thought that we might not take replacement full backs

Jamie Carragher is arguably better at right back than Luke Young and better at left back than Wayne Bridge, and is probably now third choice centre half.

Why take anyone else
