This performance followed the confirmation that we were promoted against Exeter the previous Saturday.

We tore Swansea apart for 90 minutes, the football was outstanding, a joy to watch and the team was playing with so much confidence and determination to win the title that I think the supporters went to Cambridge in the belief that we were about to collect the trophy.

I remember it well Long Jim Silver. Watching from The Braemar & seeing that heaving mass of Red & White in B Block & turning away at the wrong moment & missing Evans latest wonder goal.

the bit that stands out in my mind was evo's goal (sorry gibbee), a bouncing ball (from a throw in), evo let it drop before hitting it on the half-volley from directly in front of me on the new road, dipping and swerving magnificently into the top corner... just summed everything up really http://gpgrapevine.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

I can remember some Swansea fan offering me out in front of the Griffin before the match, real brave man too, as I was 15 at the time and a van load of police were parked up nearby!!!

Plus my mate got hit by a ball on the Ealing, sent flying, anyone remember that? (dead centre of the terrace, think it was Evans who hit the ball, loads of laughter!)

This really was a fabulous game, wasn't it? The best footballing display by the team all season and revenge for thw spawny defeat at the Vetch that was our last defeat that season. We absolutely tore Swansea to pieces that night. Someone posted a report from the South Wales Echo on the old Grapevine the following day and it absolutely raved about our performance. What a great goal by Evo.

Other points from the match were that when Swansea got their consololation goal, their fans were so stunned they didn't seem to realise it had gone in. Oh, and singing "Up with the Cardiff! We're going up with the Cardiff!" to the away fans. Boy did that make them angry!

Yep, got to agree with all of the above, especially Dans version of Evo's goal, right behind that on the New Road, still on the rise as it hit the top corner. (Great memory.)
Just got the feeling that night similar to the one watching England/Holland Euro 96 that our team was sooo good, it was hard to believe.
Makes you grin just thinking about the way we played that night...

Funniest thing that night, was when the Swansea fans were leaving, and B Block erupted into "Up with the Cardiff". A load of Swansea fans came running back in, and this poor bloke tripped up in front of all that could possibly see him, and I nearly wet myself laughing.
I think it was my brother's second game ever, and that incident got him hooked.

I'll always remember this game as confirming my suspicions that the 'official' attendances given by the club haven't always been -shall we say- kosher! If I'm right, the crowd was given as about 7,800, but I'll be damned if it was under 10k that night.

That silence when Swansea got their goal was really weird. I think it was because there was no reaction from the Swansea players themselves, they just turned away from the goal as though the ball had gone out for a goal-kick.

The Bees fans had to start cheering to let the Swansea fans know that they had scored !!

So strange, when you think how noisy the Swansea fans were earlier in the match. They had one of the best renditions of "Jump around..." that I had seen.

I was working with a Swansea fan at that time and he sat next to me in the New Road. He was truly impressed with the Bees performance, he particularly liked Scotty P who was really playing with confidence at that time.

It was a great win and I think that night we knew that we were the best side in the division.
