Is it me or are there fewer and fewer posters these days?
Seems to me that if you are going to play the diamond formation successfully you need good quality full backs who can put the crosses in. Whilst your suggestion that he is 'only a full back' is true he has a certain quality about him and delivers a mean cross and could be the piece in the jigsaw that the diamond needs to make it a success.
I'll buck the trend and say, signing a left back, who was decent last season, does not mean the difference between a mid table team and top 6 team.
Key players will be in Centre Midfield and Up Front.
A very decent signing by Rosler, but hopefully not our most significant one this season

What I do know is that he put in a helluva lot of decent crosses and if he didn't get many assists it was due more to poor finishing than poor deliveries on his part. Clayton is not a 6 yard box player, whereas I think Farid has the capability to get on the end of more of these. From recollection I think he got a few more before Gary Alexander left than he did after.
