New player for the development squad. Another midfielder :sarcasticrollseyessmilie:
Happiness is only real when shared
Looking forward to the first player to make the breakthrough to the first team sometime this century
Congratulations and good luck Max!
(The genetics are there, the skill is there.........so work hard matey, and who knows)
I know we signed him slightly later in his development but Simon Moore was a youth teamer for us too I think. Or shall we just ignore him?
Beesotted with Brentford...
It may be the case that the current development squad don't break through because they are a hastily assembled team from a mixture of places but that isn't the point. The academy set up is not a quick win but it is clear from results that we have quality at lower age groups and they need to have somewhere to progress to. Anyone who says that we shouldn't be doing it should look at Watford - read this article from 2010 - see some of the players who have come out of Watford and ask why they wouldn't want to try the same at Brentford. Do they really lack ambition that much?
I intend to live forever. So far, so good.
Firstly let me say I applaud Matthew Benham for funding an academy, I suspect he feels it may be a way of paying himself back for the hugh amount of cash he has and is putting into the club. But my fear is that should we uncover a real gem he'll be off to a bigger club quicker than you can say " agent". We cannot compete wages wise with the majority of Championship clubs and probably quite a few in League One.
I doubt we'll see many Academy players breaking into the team this season unless we get a few injuries, so it will be interesting to see if anyone makes it into the first team squad next season ?
There are a few first team contracts running out at the end of this season so maybe some of them will be replaced by our own players, and if this is the case the Academy set up will have proved a success.
Football is not a matter of life or death, it's more important than that.
I think he signed professional terms with us having been released as a youth teamer by Southampton.
I don't side with the naysayers on this. We're trying to improve our return on youth investment, some of the players in the development squad having shown signs of being able to step up to first team football (e.g. Redwood, Reeves) but these glimpses of talent needs to be offset with the short-term trade off getting promoted to the Championship. And for that we need more experienced players. That's why Reeves development is best served going on loan to a league 2 football club, where he'll have lumps kicked out of him, rather than the sanguine world of the development squad. He'll be better for the experience.
Cannot understand why anyone should doubt the benefits of the dev squad, as I understand it this is a collection of players who for whatever reason have not made the grade elsewhere but have some ability which needs to be nurtured. Indeed some may just be late developers
Should they progress to be decent footballers then at present they are contracted to us so if clubs with more cash come calling then they will attract a transfer value
Equally having been given a 2nd chance they may wish to prove themselves with us, either way as a club we can only benefit and would hope that players with ability will be moved to first team contracts when that ability starts to shine
Watford are a case in point, and something I believe Warburton was heavily involved with, if we are half as successful with ours over the next decade, and it is a long term project, then we will have done very well
I really can't understand the "just add water" views on the Youth and Development squads that have hardly had time to settle; they are both long-term projects. It's the same as a signing (like Fredericks) to the first team squad where, after a few appearances on the bench, the comments are "he'll be off next week". Some people can't see past the first 11 + 3 subs.
If we bring a player through and he's "off to a bigger club", then surely we have succeeded? It is exactly the sort of progression that will attract youngsters in the first place. Brentford FC is a very different proposition today than it was 5 years ago.
When the wind of change blows some build walls, others build windmills...
I gather that our Development Squad beat Cardiff's 2 - 1 earlier this afternoon; interesting to see the side we put out; ie whether guys like Scott Barron played.
Think Norris scored one of the goals.
YES YOU SKEGRAT!
Redwood scored the first and Norris the second. The only players involved near the first team was Reeves and Lee I think.
Good to see Lee coming back and Redwood on the scoresheet. Been impressed when I've seen Redwood play.
