Andy Scott Quotes:
“It’s clearly not good enough. I appreciate the fans coming all the way down here and we haven’t done them justice today. We didn’t have a good start and weren’t playing at the tempo I expect my sides to play. We had it in spells in the second half and kept the pressure on them and had a few chances but we weren’t good enough all over the pitch. They have been told in no uncertain terms that it is going to be a long hard season if we continue to approach games in that manner. We’ve got to do a lot better than we did today. You can talk about tactics, chances etc but we’ve got to work harder and press teams. That is how we got promoted. It is hard getting promoted but easy to lose games and I don’t like losing games, and certainly not in that manner. We are getting punished for things we didn’t do last year. We haven’t changed the way we train or the way we approach games. The personnel on the pitch have got to affect the game better than they have been. The whole basis of getting into a game is you work hard, put the other team under pressure, win the ball higher up the pitch and then you can exert a little bit of pressure yourself. We gave away really stupid fouls, we gave them good chances, we couldn’t deal with the way they were playing. We didn’t get near enough them on the ball or off it. We’ve always played 4-4-2 and I don’t feel we needed to change our formation today [when they played 4-5-1]. We’ve still got to work hard and do the right things. If we played the way we know we can play then our system would have caused them problems. You can talk about systems all day long but it is about players and their attitude to the game and how they approach it. It wasn’t good enough today. Three weeks ago when we got a good result at Huddersfield and we played reasonably well at Charlton and everyone was saying what a good side we were. But to be a good side you’ve got to do it consistently. This is only a blip, but it’s only a blip if we come out the other side quickly. But I have complete faith in my players and won’t be ringing any alarm bells yet. The players have got to take it upon themselves to think about what they are doing wrong. Myself and the rest of the staff will be doing exactly the same and we’ll make sure that we do things better on Tuesday. Carl Cort is starting to run but is doubtful for Tuesday. Ryan Dickson has done some good work but is doubtful for Tuesday too. David Hunt has got a problem with both his ankle and his knee which he has been struggling with this week. We’ve got a few out. But we’ve got a squad I have built and am very happy with. A large part of the squad is missing in key areas and Carl Cort and Ben Strevens are big misses for us up front. They are key players who are out but that should provide chances for others to grab their chance and they may have an opportunity on Tuesday.”
