I can understand why fans get frustrated watching Clayton, especially in a one on one or penalty situation when we start excepting the worst. However, the hard work, pace, power and intelligent postitions Clayton puts himself in are also resposnible for many of the one on ones and pens being created in the first place. Opposition defences never look forward to having to deal with CD on a saturday afternoon and expect the runaround, and I totally agree with you, if we sold him, he would be snapped up by one of our rivals instantly. I'm sure HD and TC would prefer to face Alexander than Donaldson any day of the week.
I slightly disagree, the majority of fans let out a groan when he misses a guilt edged opportunity, but recognise his overall contribution and value to the team, continue to sing his name and encourage him. It is a knee jerk minority who genuniely think he's rubbish and give him stick.

I'm sorry; he has pace and a bit of power but his 'hard work' comes in fits and starts (he doesn't close down defenders very often, for example) and his positional decision-making is the most frustrating thing about him. He seems to need to be told all the time to stay on the shoulder of a defender and he roams about never expecting the ball to come to him. Against Crawley, he did what he was told and scored twice but a player of his age should not need to be told all the time where to be on the pitch.
If that puts me in a minority, then so be it.

Clayton has a lot of quality about him as a footballer. But as a striker, he has a fundamental flaw. Some haven't spotted what it is yet, but after a season and a quarter of 'lack of confidence' I think some have. To get out of this division we need someone up front of Championship quality - not someone who's OK for a mid-table League One outfit. Sorry but Clayton will never fire us out of this division and we should be looking to move him on and replace him with a bit of class as soon as possible. Easier said than done though unfortunately, but if we had a Holdsworth, Blissett, Taylor, Sweetzer or O'Mara we would be top of the league by now in my opinion. I love watching him play but cringe every time he's in sight of goal because I know what's coming next. Footballer? Nice. Striker? Two words - Keith and Bowen. Sorry, but I believe Clayton is holding us back.
If we beat Southend.

If you want to play statistics, he's scored in 4 games out of 14 he's played this season. He's my first choice on the team sheet in the forwards department, given there are no options, but that's not my point. He will score goals if he follows instructions and I believe the coaching staff and players around him know those instructions and set up the team to play to his strength. You can see this and, as I pointed out, it worked well in the CTFC game. The problem is that he doesn't seem to follow those instructions for long; he's not a natural striker and it seems to me that the team is set up to get the best from him, his inbility to stick to the plan is what is most frustrating. Just listen to the bench and the instructions they give; watch Hayes positioning him (as GA did last year); listen to Forshaw after he's popped a ball into space that Clayton ignores, everyone is working to help him out, supporters, players (even letting him take a penalty) but he's got to help himself.

I've said so haven't I?

Clayton has scored 12 in his last 22 league games, if he continues this over the course of the season he will have over 20 league goals and we will have the striker we are all calling for!!

I think you're all ****s... All this slagging off of a player is really frustrating now..
You're all moany old bastards and should all feck off and the world would be a better place.
What? I'm just speaking what I feel just like all of you re: Donaldson.
I know he's frustrating at times but get behind him for feck sakes. People say he's lacking confidence and how's all of this negativity going to improve that? You're all just as much to blame as the man himself...
Rant over xxxx
