I'd be shocked and disappointed if we have stopped tracking bidwells availability, if barron gets injured at the weekend its back to square one with only redwood as cover, if affordable we need a second senior left back option (i've discounted TC as we're arent overloaded with centrebacks at the moment).

Sayonara, good luck to him but his future won't be with us.

Great shame as he could really have a fantastic career and I hoped that we might have had him for at least another year.

With all the other issues with signing Bidwell ie he lives in Liverpool l would think that it would be extravagant to sign him as well as having Barron who wouldn't have been cheap.

Whilst I see the sense in monitoring Bidwells avaliability I would see Redwood as perfectly adequate cover for the left back position though I accept we would need someone else if Barron did sustain a long term injury.

Agreed! If Uwe saw Redwood as first team, surely he would have played him Saturday?

I'm aware of that but I'm unaware of any rule saying that a Development Squad player can't play in the first team. From what I've seen of Redwood pre-season he's a talented player who could well push for a place this season.

Why give him a squad number then?the fact that he is development squad player doesn't mean he's excluded from the first team.

It's a good use of the playing budgets. Redwood isn't in the first teams budget which allows more funds for Uwe to use on other players. All Dev Squad players can play first team football. The Dev Squad budget is seperate.

No one said it does, but Bigbee's point still stands, there is a good chance we will need 2 'first team' left backs this season. We had 2 last year! And if Redwood was going to be one of them, he would have played last week, instead of putting a right back in his position! I liked what I saw of Redwood, but for whatever reason, Uwe can't think he is ready. If Everton call today and say we can have JB, we would be insane to say no thanks!!

Bidwell won't be joining IMHO the point about Redwood not being selected at Walsall was a poor decision by Uwe in my view.

A fair point, maybe if everton covered all costs if they see it really aiding his development it might be better, dont know whether that sort of thing happens to be honest

Yes I would agree with you on that one. I want to reserve judgement on Redwood until I see him in a number of first team league games not friendlies against lower opposition. He has potential but until we see him on a regular basis week in week out its impossible to know for sure if he will be good enough, just like any other development player that shows promise. Would have preferred him to have played on Saturday rather than play someone else out of position. Depending on how he performs may influence any further decision to bring Bidwell back this season if that option becomes available. However Redwood would have to be very good for us not to bring Bidwell or another experienced LB in later this season.
It was just one of those things....

Sensible words though I would point out how are we going to see him on a regular week in week out basis and know if he or indeed any of the development squad are good enough to cut it in Division One. Performances in the Development Squad and application in training are of course part of the equation but the only way of telling if a player is good enough is giving them game time, I agree with you that Saturday was a missed opportunity.

I thought one of the points of the Development squad was that they replaced the reserves as such and could step up if needed, thus meaning we did not need such a large first team squad which we could fill iwith better quality.

Signing Barron with Redwood as backup sounds perfectly sensible to me.

I disagree. We already had a young player on the pitch in Jake Reeves who struggled, so having another inexperienced player on the pitch could have caused more problems. We threw in Oyeleke against MK Dons before he was ready, and we all know what ended up happening there. Redwood will get a chance, but he's struggled with getting used to first-team training in pre-season (Uwe's words), and Logan put in a very good left-back performance against Wycombe. Also, I don't think starting with Logan at left-back really affected the outcome of the game - it was in midfield that we lost the game.

A reasoned argument in terms of the Walsall game but in the wider context when does a 'inexperienced' player gain 'experience' then. Reeves struggled for 30 odd minutes -as did the far more 'experienced' Douglas for 75 mins- after looking good pre-season so does that mean he spends another six-eight months in the Development Squad or on loan to a BSP club and then the 'experience' argument is still trotted out because it wasn't at this level. If they are good enough they are old enough.

Have to agree to disagree we threw on another in experienced 19 year old in Fredericks instead,All the players played well against Wycombe and l can never agree with putting a right footed player in what is a specialist and important position of Left Back.I understand we lost the game at Walsall for many reasons midfield being one.
