However I do suspect that our u-21 team might be stronger than some fielded by other teams - players like Donovan, Meghoma, Konak, Frederick, Arthur, Furo & Nunes who all have first team appeareances for one team or another could take part even without including 2 older or more experienced players in the 11.

I'd still rather we weren't in it given our history, but with most of the PL taking part can we really afford to give them another advantage over us?

Maybe, it depends what we have in mind for the squad for it. I imagine a lot of U21 teams do not play the strongest XI possible within the rules and we may be the same

For wider reference the rules for eligible players (this is a bit more complicated than what I saw on wikipedia)

7.8 Each Invited Club must ensure that in each Match
7.8.1 at least six of the starting eleven players named on the Team Sheet are players who were aged under 21 as at the 30th June in the year in which the Season concerned commenced; and
7.8.2 no more than two players who:
(i) are aged 21 or over; and
(ii) have made 40 or more appearances in a First Team Fixture (either in the starting elven or as a playing substitute) in each case as at the 30th June in the year in which the Season concerned [commenced],
shall be named on the Team Sheet

(First Team Fixture means the League Competition, Premier League, EFL Cup or FA Challenge Cup)

so you can actually have up to five over-age players? But three of them need to be inexperienced.

I think rebus is right, this will be for a squad of Academy / U21 / B team regulars (however those various names turn out going forwards) rather than for fringe first team players, who I think rarely play for the B team, even if they could in theory be part of some of the games.

Of course the odd player coming back from injury might get a run out on a return from injury rather than in a training ground friendly.

This forum might need renaming soon anyway. Brentford Academy, U21 [and B team] updates?

Im totally against this move.

In the Women's game the Women's Super League Clubs want to parachute their Accademy sides into the Women's National League, which is the league above our current level.

It's wrong on so many levels and we should remember where we came from.

For years the FL Trophy provided the only opportunity for us to get to Wembley.

Early round attendances probably meant the club were losing money either through travel or matchday costs and games against Accademy sides appear to be even lower.

Do you think their fans feel insulted, or they might actually enjoy the novelty of a derby game.
Port Vale v Stoke was very lively one time apparently (hello Ken) as another derby fixture that rarely appears in other competitions.

If you enjoy the novelty of playing against kids instead of a first team then you need your head tested.

We wouldn't have got much enjoyment back in ye olde times out of our first team beating QPR U21s 4-0 while their fans make up half the crowd (as per BBC report on the Vale v Stoke children game) and busy themselves smashing up the place and attacking any Brentford they can find afterwards.

To me the ultimate insult back when we were div3/4 would have been playing RaRa's or F****m u21,they would have taken the piss and lorded it over us forever if they had won.

One team got a comfortable win and the other got to know Ken a bit better. Sounds like a half decent derby night, not sure who got insulted.

Back in the present, Notts County are well supported so doubt they would be outnumbered to that sort of extent.

But past records suggest we would have won... the u21 team rarely wins. And who on earth would claim bragging rights over a u21 win "forever". Even QPR fans forgot about that U21 cup win pretty swiftly I imagine.

Also - this imaginary fixture you're insulted by hasn't been arranged and is not likely either.

Just looked on all of their forums except Bromley as they don't seem to have one and none of them have even mentioned us being in it

Rather than meant as an insult, suspect that the reason we have a thread about this competition, and some supporters have reacted positively, is that so many of us do vividly remember "where we've come from".

While enjoying playing Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd et al, we also remember how great it was, for various reasons, watching Brentford in League 1 and 2. Maybe just me, but still think of the EFL Trophy as a Senior competition; even though there's an "U21" after Brentford these days. We'll refer to the fixture as Bromley vs Brentford and it feels normal to be playing these teams.

Get the arguments why we shouldn't be eligible in the first place but, now that we are in it, suspect the Club, and certainly the supporters who do attend, will respect the competition. Indeed, wouldn't be surprised if our away followings next season will be larger than when we were a First Team participant in the Johnstone’s Paint, Auto Windscreens, Freight Rover...

It is Brentford FC’s inalienable right to participate now the Club’s academy has achieved Category One status… a level that those in the lower reaches of the football league have not, as yet, reached. It would be wrong to turn down this opportunity. 😉
