If he was going to be our highest-paid player, we wouldn’t be signing him. If we were that concerned about his health, we wouldn’t be signing him (and we’re not going to expect him to play 3,000 minutes anyway).
Besides, you can’t build the entire plane out of 20 year-old wonderkids and expect their sheer precociousness to carry them through a Premier League season. We’ve been here before with Mee, Henderson, hell, even Zanka, so I don’t get the questions of why we’d be doing this when it’s entirely clear why. It’s quality squad depth as we aim for Europe, without necessarily an expectation of putting in a full 90 every week, and a high-character veteran presence on and off the pitch.
I suspect, also, that the framing on this deal makes things look worse to some of you than the reality is. It’s not as though Phil & Friends said “sh*t, we couldn’t get Said. Let’s call Callum.” And it’s not as though we’re waving the white flag on more exciting or “classic Brentford” signings. It’s June still, in a World Cup year. Maybe wait until more moves come to fruition before we properly judge this one, as this is just one part of our transfer strategy for the window.
