Maybe I’m biased as an American, but that feels extremely similar to what Norgaard got sent off for against Everton in November ‘24. Studs up, but purely incidental, quite obviously no intent there. Different scenario bc Norgaard was going for a goal and Balogun was going for a defensive steal, but in my mind that should be appealed and overturned in the coming days. Theres just so obviously no intent there and Baloguns foot simply gets caught

Nah, it was different. Marginal , yes. But that's a red card.
The difference is that he had an ankle caught against a hard surface. Norgaard didn't

I think you sum it up perfectly, it was a leg breaker but yet completely accidental. I have seen far worse tackles with far more intent that were only yellows, probably be because they missed the intended target.
We are racking up some pretty inconsistent and erratic reffing performances now. Inconsistency has always been a challenge in football and when you get several games a day it seems to make it look worse.

It’s not remotely similar.
Balogun is straight legged and buckles his opponents ankle. An obvious case of endangering the safety of your opponent.

The point at which they were similar is in the fact that it is quite obvious that it was unintentional in both instances.
But there have also been several other instances shown from this world cup online more similar to what happened this evening where there wasnt even a yellow card given. Incredibly disappointing in my opinion if the appeal is unsuccessful. Balogun was in no way intentionally endangering his opponent, his foot quite obviously slipped while attempting to make a play on the ball

Well I’ve just learned there isn’t an appeal process for the world cup??? That makes absolutely no sense. So if some conmebol ref make an utterly flagrant call, that nation has to deal with it? Absurd, especially in a world where there are multiple refs in this world cup with genuine match fixing allegations in their past record

Except you've got VAR oversight too which makes that kind of thing more difficult. Anyway, even if there was an appeal process it wouldn't be overturned. I'd fallen asleep in front of the TV by that stage of the game but have watched it back several times and I can see why the red was given. I feel a bit sorry for Balogun because it wasn't intentional but it was dangerous.
It reminds me a bit of the two red cards picked up by JDS when he accidentally lunged into opponents in the process of trying to turn with the ball. Again, there was no intent at all but it was argued it was reckless.

That is absolutely not true. His leg was bent and that was one of reasons the card was overturned.

https://x.com/dlock4mvp/status/2072498967456497871?s=46I can accept that it’s what the rule is and it shouldnt be overturned now, but the fact that it repeatedly has not been called all tournament (The Scotland Haiti one is so much worse that one is particularly shocking) to me just highlights all that has been wrong with refereeing since VAR was implemented. Refs are too reliant on VAR to make big calls like pens and reds for them, and as a result only 20% of those plays that should be reds or pens get actually looked at by VAR and get called. Because its not realistic to stop the game everytime for VAR to look at every possible big call.

I am always wary of slow-mo replays of an incident, even more so for still pics, since while these can often usefully clarify what happened (eg contact or no), they can't always tell you why/how it happened. In other words, the action of the player at full speed as he experienced it, should be key.
And in the Balogun case, I can see why a Red was given, but watching live, I thought it was a pure accident, of the sort that can happen from time to time.
