Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

This piece is spot on in my view. Don't accept Tuchel's attempt to shift the blame!

"“Ball possession is not in our DNA like it is in the Spanish DNA or the Argentinian or Brazilian DNA,” Tuchel said after the game. If this was once undeniably true, it is now at best arguable and at worst a form of gaslighting that should disqualify Tuchel from the job on the spot. Rice, Saka, Mainoo, Elliot Anderson, Eze, Reece James, John Stones: based on what we know of them at club level, are these players who have trouble keeping the ball? Perhaps it is no wonder that in subsequent days reports have emerged from the England camp that the players themselves were unhappy with Tuchel’s safety-first approach: an approach that left them with no outlets, no options, no tools except the bluntest of all."

We retreated long before those defensive changes, the players complaining should be looking at themselves and why they went so negative after we scored. That's on them not Tuchel.

Kane said the message after we scored was to go and get another goal so why didn't he as captain enforce that on the pitch, that's his job.Tuchel's defensive subs could well have been based on a realisation that they didn't have the minerals to be brave so he just tried to baton down the hatches.

If i have a gripe with Tuchel it's that Kane was knackered and he's not quick anyway. We needed and out ball and he didn't put Watkins on and tell him to stay up.It would have given the Argies something to think about, they wouldn't have been able to go so attacking and then we wouldn't have been so penned in.

"English DNA to blame"

"I take the blame"

Tuchel is all over the place at the moment

Argentina played dirty, let's get that out of the way. The reason Argentina are in the final and England is not is Tuchel didn't continue with offensive play after England finally got the lead. Tuchel is a good manager and should keep the job but that was dire.

Tuchel told them to go and get another goal just because they didn't do it and backed off doesn't make that his fault.

I agree
Tuchel keeps the job as this will hopefully be a big learning point, when we are 1 up to decent opponents in future games.
Tuchel keeps the job, but will have to face a 2 year barrage of abuse from people who wanted Eddie Howe or Pep Guardiola in charge !

Completely disagree that this was on the players.

We all know teams can start to go deep when winning. It's natural!

The manager has it in his gift to discourage this. Konsa for Gordon did exactly the reverse. That was on 72 minutes, more than ten minutes before Argentina scored! We had not retreated massively by that stage.

If they aren't doing as he said its his job to change it. Instead he took off our only pacy outlet when they switched to 3 at the back (with two of those on a yellow!) for a defender

Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

Watched the second half back today. I’m no football manager but I couldn’t help thinking that when we were 1-0 up, if we’d have brought Watkins or Rashford on and got them to stay on the half way line, they’d have had to leave a couple back and we’d have had an outlet. Seems so obvious

Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

So why did he not back that up with action!?
Your asking me something i already stated my my post ;)

It doesn't matter who the manager is,the players lack the mentality to kick on and go win it,they're scared to lose and go in their shell. It's been happening for a long time.

Michael Owen said that was the mentality even when he was playing and he was in the middle of it so don't listen to me i'm just a bloke on a forum,he isn't.

Honestly mate how many times have you watched a game where the players didn't follow instructions and what was that manager at the time able to do about it?

Like i said though it was a big mistake not to take off Kane and bring on Watkins or even Rashford to give them a way out.

Except those players you/the-article name were utter sh*te against Argentina and totally anonymous. The point doesn’t work at all.

Not convinced, sorry! There was no need for him to accept the 'mentality' if that indeed was what he was doing, which I doubt.

This broadens the criticism of Tuchel (as I did above or on the game thread) and is also spot on IMO

Most weren't sh*te or anonymous before we scored! We had been the better team.

Putting on konsa, burn and o reilly doesn't scream "go get a goal" to me. As a player seeing those subs and seeing kane, Rogers and Bellingham ahead of me blowing out of their arses, it tells me to bunker down and hope for the best

That's fine we don't have to agree,i'm sure we're both equally pissed off about the result.
I reckon I'm more p*ssed off than you are ;) ;) ;) :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

That's the most wannabe viral Twitter statement I've seen written on this board. Maybe the quote tweet will be a hit on there.

It seems an slightly odd thing for the manager to say but TT hasn't decided how a generation of England players are coached.
Right but HE’S the coach… he has every right to coach them different???? HE makes the decision to bunker???

Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

Rice and James were woeful before the goal and after it! Anderson was carrying Rice and James didn’t look match fit/sharp.
Simple fact is we didn’t have loads of brilliant midfielders standing up to be counted and take the game to the opposition.
Tuchel told them to go and push for the second goal and they did the opposite.
Doesn’t matter what any of them have done at club level. They didn’t do it when it counts.
That’s on them.

Tuchel made it clear after the Norway game that they didn't do what they were told but we found a way.To be honest the only time i think they played the way he wanted them to was that attacking spell against Croatia.

They had already bunkered down to hope for the best, against instructions, that’s the point, and also the reason for those subs!

Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

Sorry but I’m not having Tuchel’s gas lighting. “The players are not doing what I’ve told them so I’m going to respond by leaning even more heavily into the thing I don’t want them to do.”
Are people seriously having this? That last 20 mins is ALL on Tuchel.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree! Easy to blame the players. Tuchel has to shoulder his share of the blame, for the decisions on Wednesday but also before. Not good enough!

If it’s easy to blame the players… it’s surprising that hardly anyone ever does barring brief moments/incidents!
At a certain point it’s got to become obvious that our little prima Donna’s bottle it no matter what the manager says! It’s not the first time we’ve behaved like this in a game and not just under Tuchel.

Oh dear!

Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

The fact he used the same drop deep and pray tactics for three games in a row shows he is chatting absolute frath.

Spot on.

The blokes chat this week is beyond belief.

The DNA comments alone should enhance the P45 speed of delivery.

Hes the sodding manager and the team identity stems from him. Including a pass and move tactical approach.

His DNA seems to be "double down on what is happening" Happened in pretty much every game.

The one game where it didnt was the Croatia game.................................. Oh wait, the best performance football wise of our tournament.

He feked up in the semi final. If he saw what they were doing and was demanding a different approach then make the changes under instruction to go on the pitch and change it. I could accept that. Not losing his bottle and throwing on Dan Burn and Co.

Mexico was necessity................... Argentina was insanity.

Oh well.

Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

Tuchel told them to go and get another goal just because they didn't do it and backed off doesn't make that his fault.

I mean it is a bit his fault, it is precisely his job to get them to do what he wants. If they don't then that is partly on him. In any case "go and get another goal" is not a very useful instruction.

Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

If TT has truly learned from this tournament then it would make sense to keep him on and try and win the Euro’s.

I can’t help feeling though that Carsley could be the man to get us over the line. I know he is not media savvy and is not a big name as such but he has won two tournaments, plays a progressive but organised game and the players seem to respond to him.

The current Spain manager has a similar background to Carsley and he has done a pretty good job. It kind of proves that managing a national side is very different to managing a club side.

Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

We'll never know what the instructions were in the semi or whether or not the players followed them - either way, Herr T should never have blamed them PUBLICALLY. That's a sure way to not only lose the dressing room but anger the fans.
Also, if he's right and the players did ignore his instructions - he's admitting that his time in charge has been an utter failure and he doesn't have the team on his side.

Agree. This will not end well.

I don't know whether players deliberately ignored instructions or were just incapable of carrying them out. I doubt it was deliberate. Venables was renowned as a manager for making sure every player on the pitch knew exactly what his job was. When cross after cross was going into the box in the last 20 minutes and shots weren't being closed down, I couldn't see that players knew exactly what their jobs were.

Too often, players get managers sacked for not playing for them. On this occasion though, the style of play and failure to carry out instructions is on Tuchel totally.

Yes i don't agree with all of his decisions.

As an example though of players not doing what they're told to do.Do you think Thomas Frank became a poor tactician after he left us or do you think the Spurs players didn't commit to his tactics and do what he asked them to do?

I'm sure plenty of other examples could be found of players not following the managers plans every week in football.

No. How could they get a goal without an outlet? If he wanted to go get a goal, he should have bought Saka on...the subs were worse than awful.

He gave them until the hydration break to go for it but we retreated instead but like i've already said a few times and won't be saying it again:),not having an outlet was a poor decision.

Once he made the changes I think an attacking approach was difficult. And having watched a bit of the game back (masochistic, I know) I don't think that we had given up and retreated quite as completely as some have made out before the drinks break. It is natural that they would have a little spell after our goal. I don't think yesterday's game helped Tuchel's cause either tbh as Saka didn't look like quite the walking wounded that might have justified the decision not to bring him on against Argentina.

And yes I do think TF did a bad job at Spurs tbh, much as I love him, but that's another discussion.

Fair enough..i'm not a Tuchel lover or hater.I think his squad choice was naff with not enough creativity and i didn't like us playing with 2 DM's.

Even so,our players bottled it on the night and it's not the first time we've done it in a big competition and i'm not sure what any manager can do about that.He can't grow a pair for them.

You keep saying that the players bottled it, but the person who bottled it the most was the manager. His first 3 changes were to bring on defenders, there was no pace left on the pitch, the players had no chance to counter attack with the personnel left on.

Your entitled to your opinion mate,i'm not going to keep going round in circles it's getting a bit boring.

Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

The problem with this was what was he going to do in extra time? Would he replace some of the defenders with forwards or would it have been 30 minutes of backs against the wall? What was his plan? We’ll probably never know
We won’t know but I don’t think he’d have expected to see out a full 30 minutes like that.

Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

How do other nations manage it, then? :)

One of the big issues at this level, i think, is that you just don't get much practice for the big games. A bit of an unsolvable conundrum... but so much of the prep time is beating up inferior teams, and there's very little genuine practice against top-level opposition. Not much chance to see or know how to react... and clearly, on this occasion, they bottled it.
Yes, it was excruciating to see us capitulate against the Argies after being one-up, but there was no confidence in the subs that he made, to the extent that we looked disjointed, notwithstanding they are all players of undoubted ability. I think you’re right about the limited time they play together too, especially against lesser teams, and there’s a growing tendency for the players to be ‘injured’ or ‘ill’ for some of these matches, which is outside Tuchel’s powers and control.

Thomas Tuchel (England manager)

I would keep TT unless Pep is available,
I read a tweet earlier that Italian national team are going all out to get Pep in as manager/ I would have thought we are far more promising a job than Italy currently . They dont seem to have many good players coming through
