I’m particularly interested in him being named
‘African footballer of the year’, in a World Cup year! Was it just a playing in France competition? Even if so, he still bested his presumably many, rivals.

African footballer of the year hasn't been announced for 2026 and that happens later in October/November.
Sangaré won the Marc Vivien Foe prize for best African in Ligue1.

Is it going too far to say this is the biggest signing in the clubs history? Not just financially but actually getting this level of player through the door after previous attempts failed for one reason or another.

Define biggest? If you mean largest, yes. If by biggest you man we are laying down a marker that we are a club with high ambition that can get the big players, likely. If you mean "most important" too soon to sell. I've heard others explain signing Pontus was a really huge moment in the clubs story.

I think it already has the feel of a similar level jump to Pontus. Then we took the captain of a larger richer club to jump from midtable to serious promotion contender. Sangare is by all accounts the key young player for Lens who ran the galacticos of PSG very hard to finish second. That all the chatter before was about how he’d be ideal for Liverpool etc shows the level jump.

I don't think that level of detail is ever going to be likely. Just chill - all will be revealed in due course.
