Franco Baresi RIP

Franco Baresi, aged 66. Brilliant player when Italian defenders were rightly revered as the best in the world.

….Tassotti, Costacurta, Baresi, Maldini… rightly praised as one of the best defences EVER.

RIP Franco.

Franco Baresi RIP

RIP Franco you were a real class act
Absolutely. Remember seeing Don Howe give a masterclass session on defensive cohesion using that Milan defence as his model. Watch their eyes, he said... Baresi, ball, Baresi, ball... everything pivoted around the man. Baresi would always make the optimal call on where he should be and the others had to make sure they kept in sync.

Franco Baresi RIP

Very sad news that he’s passed away. Genuinely the best I have ever seen in his position, a stalwart of gazetta football Italia and one of the defining figures in the art of il catennacio.

At a time when I was watching Jamie Bates on a Saturday, Baresi showed you how it was supposed to be done on a Sunday. RIP.

A great defender.
Part of the great Italian defence see post #573.
Franco RIP 🙏 .

Just 66, such a shame. Fantastic player. Rip.

Franco Baresi RIP

Died of a lung condition and was I think a heavy smoker. Having just come back from Italy, I'm amazed at how much of the older generation still smoke.

Franco Baresi RIP

I remember him being as hard as nails and still being able to play football.

One of the best of all time.

Rest well and thank you for making Sunday afternoons a lesson in how to defend 🇮🇹

Franco Baresi RIP

The definition of a defender; did everything you’d want a defender to do and did it all well. Sad day.

Franco Baresi RIP

Undoubtedly a legend. One club man I think. RIP

Franco Baresi RIP

A footballer made of granite, fond memories of watching the Azzurri doing their thing with him at the centre of their defence.

Franco Baresi RIP

Alongside Maldini with his film star looks, Baresi exuded class and Italian cool only rarely stooping to the dark arts but when necessary doing so without you ever really noticing. What a player! :(

Franco Baresi RIP

A true legend, will not be forgotten. Defined defending in a way that had not been seen before. One of the all time greats.

RIP Franco

Franco Baresi RIP

Oh that’s sad news. Easily the greatest defender ever. Imperious.

Franco Baresi RIP

In the conversation for best defender of all time with Maldini, Moore and Beckenbauer IMHO. RIP
Wot? No John Terry? But to be serious, that must be a very good shout for the top four.

Sad loss.

You seem to have missed Terry Evans off that list somehow.

Franco Baresi RIP

Made defending enjoyable to watch through his elegance, skill and class. Sad news. RIP

Franco Baresi RIP

I remember reading something, about Maradonna's second goal against England, in 1986. Baresi was quoted as saying that Maradonna wouldn't have scored that goal against Italy, because he wouldn't have made it as far as the penalty area.

The mental image of Baresi taking out Madonna still makes me smile.

RIP Franco.

Franco Baresi RIP

...he was a proper footballer..silky....hard as nails.

Franco Baresi RIP

Along with Gaetano Scirea (died in a car crash aged 36), the best central defenders ever produced by Italy.
Catenaccio was made for them.
So sad to see their national team so lacking at present.
