To extract from Mr. Banana: “It’s going to be a mixed season”

In my 50+ plus years of supporting us friendly results mean nothing, it's the real games that count.we will still finish in the top 10 x

Stade Rennais 2 Brentford 4 (Thiago, Pinnock, Dango, Wilson)

Dango hobbling but no mention, Vitaly waving, Kevin not smiling ... we have a lot to be concerned about.
Kayode not even bothering to turn up. Shambles.

We'd had this before. A bad pre-season has, in my memory, led to a better season then when we've had a good pre-season.
We’re doomed. Doomed, I tell ye!

I’d be amazed if good or bad results had any bearing on the season, but it was more the pissing on chips nature of the post I was replying to, seemed a sense of “why are you happy” which was odd

. Anyone making anything of this is just trying to make a story out of nothing.

A bit defensive - it was a genuine question and a not unreasonable one.

Stade Rennais 2 Brentford 4 (Thiago, Pinnock, Dango, Wilson)

Any odder than Ajer, Henry, Yarmo, JDS or Schade who also played in the morning game?

Yes

JDS is coming back from injury and hasn't been a starter for years

Ajer was not a first choice CB last year

Schade might be leaving

Yarmo's place looks less certain to start given Sangarre's presence

In short, the morning side looked weaker

Friendlies are for coaches to try new tactics and player combinations and those players to adapt to them.

Stade Rennais 2 Brentford 4 (Thiago, Pinnock, Dango, Wilson)

Ajer was not a first choice CB last year
Neither was Ethan Pinnock and there is zero chance he is ahead of Ajer in the pecking order

Schade might be leaving
There are no credible rumours of a Schade departure at the moment. A guaranteed starter against Spurs IMO

JDS is coming back from injury and hasn't been a starter for years
Carvalho is also coming back from injury and has only started one match in the last 18 months.

Yarmo's place looks less certain to start given Sangarre's presence
Yarmo will play at least 35 PL matches this season.

Stop looking for problems that don’t exist.

I don't think IB was doing that. It pleased to me to ba a question raised out of concern.

I suspect a number of players who started yesterday morning will start against Frankfurt in next Saturdays afternoon game

No systems or tactics or formations?. No dead ball instructions to try out?

Hmmmmm
Of course not. They're told to run around a lot, shout and point. Essential grounding and a strong basis for many unsuccessful pub teams.

Tactics?!? Put em in the old WM from all their other seasons, cup of tea at half. Marvelous.

I agree I have a vague memory of going 1 0 down to Swansea in a PSF, someone behind me shouting you need to get the cheque book out Lange....

We went on to win 5 1. Can't recall how we did that season.

Probably mid table in the 3rd division I guess.

I thought we looked a strong EPL team that was sensibly using the opportunity to bed ideas in

I don't recall anything like that against Swansea. We did thump Cambridge 5-0 in a PSF at GP in about 1981. If it was that season we finished in our usual 9th or 10 place.

Just watched this - always worries me when our Comms team don’t ask about knocks and injuries. Obviously a ‘gagging order’ in place . Dango was hobbling a lot as he came off the pitch but maybe was due to the fact he was walking around with his boots off 🤞
New boots. Always happened to me at the start of the season. You think they’re broken in until you get playing in them!

JDS played in the morning game…looked very sweaty when he walked past us at the end.

A decent match and frankly, if Carlsberg did away days, that was pretty close.

Agree with not looking from problems that down exist. Whole squad (inc a couple of youngsters) got a good workout bar Kayode, SVDB, Milambo so lots of positives.

If the first half is anything to go by, front three looked dangerous on every attack, Sangare looks a real asset and Wilson did well coming on.

Backline OK but the openness of our play means we are always liable to attacks, but no difference to the last 5 years really.

Business as usual at the Bees, but with some quality off the bench added.

I can remember watching a PSF from corner of Royal Oak and New Road early 80s, and some blokes older than me (I’d have not even been a teenager) sarcastically commenting “oooh new found sense of aggression in Gary Roberts play”

Not must of a story but your post dredged it up from the corners of my mind.

“Get your cheque book out Lange (RIP) was said every week back then! 😂

I was not looking for a problem. I was asking a reasonable question to see what people's views were. Isn't that what this place is for?

My reading of the two games yesterday is the senior players in the first match are a bit behind in terms of fitness for various reasons. Next week's open friendly I'm sure will be as close as possible to the league starting XI.

Stade Rennais 2 Brentford 4 (Thiago, Pinnock, Dango, Wilson)

People thought we looked well on top of the physical and fitness side of the contest despite the roasting heat.

The fans saying "we don't organise enough pre-season friendlies in front of fans and so are going to be under prepared" should note that yesterday were officially announced pre-season games #5 and #6 for Rennes, vs. #1 and #2 for us. The first four didn't seem to have prepared them very much.

Damsgaard playing in the morning game probably also allows Sangare more time to play alongside some more of the first team regulars. Help bed him into the team and build connections.

I imagine overall, there are a number of defining factors related to fitness, cohesion and the balancing of two competitive teams in pre-season.

Let’s not start looking for faults when the season hasn’t even started yet, life is good at Brentford.
