Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Happens all the time though, in Transfer Windows. Often absences are announced as minor, unmeasurable issues (‘sickness’, ‘back spasm’), with the club protecting their asset from injury before sale.
I don’t really see the difference when the player does the same for himself. It concentrates the minds of the parties to get the transfer done, and they can all move on. I doubt OW has said he’s on strike, and at the moment, he’s missed one game.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

It probably says more about what he thinks Villa’s future looks like than his… although a decent wedge from a few years in warmer climes may be tempting.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

No doubt with an agent who wants their share of the pudding instructing him to down tools.

He may not have used the words “I’m going on strike,” but by saying he won’t play, that’s what he’s doing.

Aston Villa don’t want to sell him. He hasn’t trained. VIlla played without a recognised forward yesterday. Emery said questions about whether he refused to play should be directed to Watkins.

Of course he’s on strike.

Villa don’t want to sell him because they’ve already sold lots of bodies in this window! I think Martinez is trying to get a move away too. No utterings from AV about being on strike there. Watkins will see it as victimisation if he’s the only one left. Villa will sign Jackson to replace him.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

There is clearly something not right at Villa and I think it's beyond just their financial restrictions.

Here, you have a team that have finished top 6 two years running, have just won the UEFA Cup, so will be in the Champions League this season. This should be a team that players want to stay at and want to come and play for.

I understand (like the majority of PL clubs) that they will always have to sell to balance the books, so it wasn't a surprise that Rogers went for £120m, or whatever it was (although I'm not convinced Chelsea is a step up). I suppose Konsa to Arsenal was a move he didn't feel he could turn down.

But Watkins is on his way down the football ladder. Martinez unlikely to move upwards anywhere. Tielemans to Man U seems a sideways move to me.

They massively over-achieved last year (the XG table had them on 45 pts in 12th), Without those players, it's fair to assume they will drop further. And as the likes of Spurs, Man U, Newcastle and others have shown, bringing in very expensive replacements does not make you better and can make you worse!

I reckon you can add Villa to Newcastle as being a good outside bet for 18th place this year.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Villa to Man United is not a sideways move.
Man U's achievements in the past 5 - 10 years suggest otherwise. Sure, they can pay more and get bigger crowds.

But Tielemans has gone from one club in the CL to another. Still a big name but trading off past glories, imo.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

I don't understand these players ? Are they really all so lacking in a thought process. If you don't want to play for any reason go down in a heap after a challenge in training and get up limping, saying something tweaked on been pulled. Then no one is the wiser.

2 FA Cups
2 League Cups
1 Europa League
1 Charity Shield ;)

v

1 Europa League
No to mention a world wide fanbase a and significant marketing opportunities for you as a player

Crazy how we we're disgusted with the 🐍 but it's ok for him to do it because he's not doing it to us.

Not really crazy, I'm hoping all our rivals implode 👍

🍻🍻🍻🍻 These are for our boy Ollie 👍

I’m starting to think that young Oliver cribbed on his dickhead test in Exeter.
Is it being a dickhead for demanding the opportunity to earn more money???

Emery’s reaction to Ollie not being available spoke volumes for me. Emery always strikes me as a decent and straightforward kind of guy. OW has probably strayed into dickhead territory, yes. For the record I wasn’t bothered by his finger pointing celebrations a few seasons back.

it is when you become unavailable to play for the club that's been paying you millions, alongside your fellow teammates.

You're under contract. If you want to go, fine. But you're under contract.

A very old fashioned and pedantic point of view. I agree whole-heartrdly!

They will get the same output from Jackson on the pitch as they do from Watkins on strike

Agree he should play

But have Villa been that keen on him
as a player?

In case people haven’t seen it, 1:30 is the relevant part. He’s quietly seething.

I have some sympathy for a manager/coach attempting to field those kinds of questions, especially when their English isn't great. It must be hard enough to reply diplomatically when you are confident in the language, let alone be diplomatic and are struggling for the right words.

It must be so tempting (as KA must have felt with Wissa last year) to go out and say, "Yes, despite us making young Watkins rich beyond his wildest dreams, helping him to Uefa success and CL football and helping him into the England squad, I can confirm that the greedy f***er is refusing to put himself forward for selection and is bleating that his head is not in the right place to play football - the very thing we pay him for and you, the fans, pay money for at the gate."

I've no problem with any footballer wanting to increase their wage packet - any human would - but downing tools, especially with the money they're already on is pathetic. No doubt advised by his agent, but no thought of the consequences.

I thought he handled it really well, he’s conveyed his emotions without actually saying anything.

I think you are sending out mixed messages to your employee here... one minute your flashing the contract and then saying its ok for me to go...???

Not really. Clubs can’t prevent their players and their agents talking to other clubs, but they you are required to play.

the league will be littered with players who at any one time will want to go, either because they’ve been contacted or feel they can force a move.

But throughout all that, it is still possible to remain professional and give your all to your team

David Beckham at Real Madrid is a good example phases out training with youth kept professional and back in team winning trophies

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Might be a slice to Exeter ?
Correct. That's taken into account

But we also get solidarity payments

Under FIFA regulations, a solidarity contribution requires a new club to deduct 5% from any total transfer compensation paid for a professional player and distribute it proportionally to the clubs that trained and educated the player between the ages of 12 and 23

So £2.5m and we get about a fifth of that. So the £0.5m (15%) we have pay Exeter is funded by the 1% we get off the top of the transfer fee.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Thats 15% of our money so about £0.5m.
Yes. My maths say

Exeter get £500k sell on and £2m solidarity
we get £3.2m net sell on after paying Exeter, and £500k solidarity, so £3.7m.

Just setting out for clarity.

If it's like 2020 Exeter might write a website article telling us exactly what they are earning from it!

Yes. So forget about the £2m exeter solidarity - nothing to do with us.

We get £500 solidarity. and we pay Exeter £510,000 in their share of the sell on. So basically a wash

So net net we get 20% of the profit AVFC made which amounts to So 20% of 50-33 , which is £3.4m. The current sale will be in Euros so there's a FX unknown here too. But basically £3.5m

Add that to the £8m from Konsa and it a genuine donation from Aston Villa to us of about £11.5m .

Thanks William!

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Almost paid for the West stand at the Gtech just from the sell on fees for Watkin and Konsa!
I told my Villa friends that they had pretty much paid for the Gtech by buying Hogan, Konsa and Watkins. These two sell ons probably do make it up to over 70m!
