He wasn't in the squad for the defeat against Charlton and liked a tweet announcing the defeat so he appears to be in a not particularly subtle way pushing for a move. Also the other club reported to be interested in signing him, Sunderland, have just signed a left back.

I’m not sure I agree; while we have a list of players who can play left back, I don’t see any who’s a nailed-on starter:
Lewis-Potter has taken that berth most often recently but Saturday showed there’s much more to his play than being a left back. Personally, I think he still has weaknesses there if we’re up against a top side and need a defensive shift.
Henry hasn’t played many minutes for some time. Maybe the Club know more about his prognosis that anyone is letting on.
Meghoma has rumours of a loan circulating.
Hickey seem to be reserved for right back cover and rotation.
So, I'd say that if we’re presented with an opportunity for a player who could make the position his own, particularly if he’s been on our radar for some time, like prior to last season, and project there’s value to be had, we’re quite likely to go for it.
Of course, it could all melt away like a snowman in August.

Rico is 29 and in the last year of his contract. We know all about his injury record.
Hickey is 24 but has only started around about 30-40 matches in four seasons. We can't rely on him to stay fit as much as I'd love him to because he is some player.
KLP is 25 and has done an amazing job, but is showing real signs he could be maturing into a very good midfielder.
Meghoma is 20, has no experience at PL level, had mixed reviews at PNE and Rangers and arguably might turn out to be a better winger than full-back.
Diouf is 21 and wants to maintain his PL lifestyle. He's also very good and has potential to get better once our coaches get hold of him.
We don't usually wait until a player leaves before we get a replacement in. So yes, maybe we do need to get him in now IF the deal is right.

Well, you named all of them, I’d be happy with any of Hickey, KLP or Rico starting a match
I’ve watched KLP keep Salah quiet multiple times, the fact he’s good adding to the attack is a bonus. I also think he’s been better stepping into attacking roles from full back than when played in a dedicated forward position. It opens up more space than he’d have as the starting winger. The West Ham fans don’t seem to rate Dioufs defensive attributes either

For a start, it makes us less predictable, clubs knew they were going to have Kayode marauding up and down the right and can plan accordingly. With what I’ve seen, he’s going to mean that they have to plan for it on the left too. Also, allows us to switch it up within the match.
He also frees up some of our other players more, gives KLP more time as a winger or even midfielder and improves our depth there and allows Hickey to spend more time on the right wing.
Is the above worth £40m? Probably not. But it’s probably worth something. I trust PG at this point to know exactly how much that something is, and not offer a penny more.

Not opposed, since i can see what we'd like in him, but not for anywhere near the near-on £40m that West Ham supposedly want for him ... if they're talked down to say £20-25m (being with all realistic add-ons), I could see the case for it, but we're not in a critical need so it would be no great pain breadth-wise to have to go for a LB, for as long as KLP doesn't raises too much of a fuss about having to play there (which IMHO he doesn't, as long as he can be convinced that it's the best way to get minutes)

IIRC when we played Wet Spam at home last season, Diouf was a liability in defence but was VERY good going forward- a bit of pace and he put some wicked crosses into our box.
So we get him in to play LW as competition/ backup to KS (with DO / JA on the right) and work him hard on improving his defensive skills.
Then he would be interchangeable with KLP. It would also suggest Rico stays.
The last two matches have shown a lot of flexibility with positioning and players turning up in all sorts of unexpected places. It must be challenging for opponents to follow and confused the **** out of Spurs.
Thoughts ?

If we are planning to spend north of £30m on a player then I wouldn't want it to be on a gamble that we can convert him from one position to another because we weren't sure he was good enough at either.

Our guys are excellent gamblers and they would only do it if they felt it has good odds of success (IMHO)
Also, none of the players we buy are the finished article unless they’re towards the end of their career - all are bought with development potential which we’re excellent at extracting.
