I hope he hasn’t played his final game for us.
I doubt it. Contract tirggered. Why would you let a proven first team player , international , and part of the promotion team who can STILL cut it in this division walk out the door ?

Back to where we were a year ago with Rico.

One year on his deal, returning from injury, lots of competition for his place. Does he manage another 30 games next year?
Once he’s fully match fit, I’d say he’ll be at least a rotated starter. Hopefully, we’ve got enough players to allow rotation at left back, keep players fresh and Keith can select ‘horses for courses’.

If he's fit and back to his best, with no lingering injury after-effect, then he's our best left back. So fingers crossed he is back to 100% 🤞
(and that's no slight on KLP who's done an incredible job for a winger standing in there - but ultimately I think not being a natural/experienced LB sometimes shows)

Must be due a testimonial this summer, hopefully the gate receipts will let him buy a pub in retirement.

Great news about the extension, feel we need to do some serious succession planning in his position but having him here another year (at least) will be invaluable.

The question must be asked, why has he not signed a new contract already. The club will be anxious to complete the squad for next season, and will be seeking a fee. In my humble opinion he is off this summer.

He’s on probably a couple of million a year at least so I would hope any testimonial would be for a charitable cause.

I think you need to read today’s news. He’s with us for next season.

Buy a pub in retirement? Have you time-travelled from the 1970?

So, according to the Rico and Mathias threads exercising the one year option is just code for they're off this summer. 🤔

It’s certainly a debate to have. If you want to avoid losing players for no transfer fees at the end of their contracts, then selling the summer a 12 month club option is triggered is the last chance to get a fee.

Clearly the club may be happy for both to run down their contracts and leave for free next summer, but it’s not unreasonable to suggest that won’t be the case.

Rico Henry

Could be that he's off and we want a fee. Or perhaps he's staying for twelve months and then leaving on a free? Could be either?

Maybe it's just "wait and see,' regarding his return to full form and fitness and both parties are happy to leave it at that?

Whether he's a regular starter or not id be glad to have him available.

So basically absolutely anything is possible!

Rico Henry

But for his injuries, for my mind he'd have been heading to the World Cup. At his pomp, he was the best attacking English left back around.

Rico Henry

Rico gonna be fit and raring to go for start of season??

Does Rico have a testimonial coming up? Looks like he joined us in August 2016 so 10 years ago. All this talk of signing El Hadji Malick Diouf as his replacement started me wondering about this. It may have been discussed already in this thread so apologies for not checking if that's the case.

Are they even a thing anymore?

Rico Henry

At the risk of being controversial, hope not.
Certainly for PL players anyway.
That's pretty sad if true. I know Rico is probably sorted for life financially but a game honouring 10 years of brilliant service should always be available to the player. He could easily donate whatever monies are raised to his favourite charities if he doesn't personally want/need the funds.

Rico Henry

Possibly a transition season with a clear successor by the end.

I suspect we are now further on with this transition, assuming Diouf joins. I know it is almost sacrilege to raise it but might he even leave?

I'm sure a game for charity would be a sell out. (y)

Pretty sure the Diouf signing is at least the beginning of the end for Rico. I do think he will be here for the season, but am not expecting much PL action, unless injuries dictate things.

There was no sight quite like Rico bombing up the pitch in his prime. Sadly, I think his best days are now behind him, due to injuries taking their toll. Can still do a job for us, but the baton is being passed on.

I’m sure the Club would not oppose a request if he had an offer from another club he would accept and they’d wish him well. On the other hand, he will probably prefer to see out his contract, knowing it’s all positive.

Hopefully he stays for this season then does the same as Ethan and gets a great deal to finish his career, sad to see any of the remaining promotion team leaving but they've all been model pros and are a credit to the club and will long be remembered by most fans. Not many promoted clubs have so many players that played such critical roles in getting the club promoted and then adapt and improve like our crop of players have and then remain at the club

Rico Henry

Correct me if i'm wrong but jmf was asked who would be our first player to play for England, i'm quite sure he said Rico. a few years back it was nailed on.

Injuries have been incredibly cruel for the lad, but I personally believe he's still premier league standard. I hope he stays, but if Hull, Coventry, Ipswich come for him before the end of the window... I'd say a great move for him and perhaps for the club.

This window is a rollercoaster of emotions.

Rico Henry

Up until he got injured away at Bournemouth last season, he was absolutely motoring. Back to the old Rico we all know and love. Unless this latest setback has somehow caused him to regress, I think left back is still his to compete for. Would love to see him stay (at least) one more season.

Rico Henry

You rarely hear of them because players never stay long enough these days for it to be a thing.
Those that do have one, certainly in PL years (2000 onwards when wages exploded), have donated the money raised to charities.
Cant edit my post but here is a list of players currently with their teams having been there for 10+ years.
Doesnt mention if any left for loan spells etc in between but not sure that actually matters.1000025122.jpg

Whats impressive mind is Lewis Dunk.
16/17 years at same club with a loan spell in 2013 to Bristol City.

And he truly did play for them when they were sh*t!

I think we may possibly see another legend leave, Rico very much in the Ethan mode. If only Rico wasn't injured, he'd be a full on England international and probably not playing for us but one of my favourite ever players, I'll miss him if he goes but due to the amount of time he's had on the sidelines through injuries and his age, I fully understand that he needs to play. A brilliant defender, so much pace and awareness, the perfect full back. As Always Up The Bees.
