Slagging-off opposition players during matches

Slagging-off opposition players during matches

If people want to slag off opponents, that's fine (even if in some cases it actually lifts them rather than deterring them.)

But if people really want to exercise their vocal chords, I always think it more productive to cheer on our players, than give it some to the other team's players.

Quite a while back a bunch of us were giving Kevin Ellison stick at GP, ( hang yer boots up mate ) and other stuff ,,think he was playing for stockport or chester , anyway he loved it and joined in the banter , every time he run past us he was shouting stuff to us , a great character

Indeed, a great character. Also a dirty bugger when the mood takes him.

And I say "takes", not "took", since apparently he's still on the go with Vauxhall Motors:
FA Cup: Kevin Ellison on mental health and still playing at 47

I think that's happened to us a few times, Grant Holt I think once when we called him a fat Bastard

Only time calling players etc ****s shouldn't be allowed is in the kids friendly zones. Aways and anywhere else in the stadium fine.

Thanks all, reading the replies is just like revisiting the New Road terrace, lovely stuff 😍

My S107 visits are tied into my group who have STs there, hey ho 🙃
S100 is a good place to offer opinions to the opposition especially as the subs warm up nearby and for away corners but there tends to be a sprinkling of tourists who generally find it very entertaining. There was a family near me who had Ted Lasso memorabilia so obviously been to Richmond and all 4 had the new home kit 👏 they seemed to have a great day

There were some players who just thrived on it. Fletcher at Bournemouth, Dean Windass, Lee Trundle, Tony Roberts. All part of the game IMO and if they’re rattled even better.

Ok, no-one's said it so here goes: if someone has a trigger-happy QR reader finger, and you've called Robertson a Scottish git rather than a f***ing useless git going to automatically put you on the wrong side of a ban?

So then, are we "allowed" to do this anymore? I mean a bit of grief when they are at our side of the pitch etc?

I gave Archie Gray a bit of verbals, history of not joining us, young chap to wind up, etc on Saturday. Admittedly it wasn't particularly inventive from me "Gray, Gray... you're 5h!t".

Thing is, a bunch of folk around me acted as if I was out of place, mildly shocked they were.

Modern football? Am I a caveman? Mixture of both? 🤔

You can do whatever you want; if it’s putting off the opposition against Brentford, even better.

It’s weird if you don’t give the opposition stick.

On the other hand, Liam Moore got worse and worse every time he played against us, and I was more than happy to point out quite how sh*te he was

Think it may have been the "Oh West London" chant.
First time I’ve heard it for a while, but it was certainly given an… er… full-throated airing on Saturday.

If you can be in one of the first few rows and get in the ear/head of the full back or winger etc it’s priceless. Best if you can do it without swearing, add a bit of subtle humour but with a cutting edge. You have to take it back though if things go against us. Remember giving dogs to a centre half who had no control, kept slicing the ball, then he scores from a corner and runs straight towards us. Fair play I say.

Reflects badly on the others not you. It’s a football stadium not a flower shop.

My only disappointment is that you didn’t have a pop at all of them. ☺️

Maddison used to thrive on it but I think his hair slows him down nowadays.

What initially surprised me most (and then maybe wasn’t so surprising on reflection) was that, around me anyway, it was mainly younger fans that were singing it. Not sure if that was the case elsewhere?

As someone comfortably in early middle age (44), choose not to partake in that particular song but was thinking:
1) Is it simply that they don’t know that it’s unnecessarily offensive.
2) Is it some outlet / pushback against what they feel is an overly PC (to them) world that they live in that they can escape from for 2hrs in a football stadium.

The former might be simply an “oh ok, come to think of it moment” when told, the latter more challenging. More likely misdiagnosed and so this post is completely pointless - although at least show you’re working before slagging me off like an opposition player.

...I called him a Scottish git.... because he's not a f***ing useless git... but he is a Scottish git....as am I.... actually I'm a big Scottish git tbf...so be my guest regarding anonymous QR I say... but much easier to tell me to shut it.... and I probably will... perhaps.

Im guessing "you're gonna get your f***ing head kicked in" is probably off limits now?

Slagging-off opposition players during matches

Can’t believe this is even a question.

The world has obviously changed since those exchanges with Tony Roberts….

....I went charging down the stairs to the corner flag in E110...and shouted...at the top of my voice...'Robertson you Scottish git'...as he was taking their corners...wry grin from him... given my accent.... but the look of horror on the faces of the patrons in E110.... well.... so all I can say is that those in the East better get used to it this season... there's plenty more to come.
Come to E112 and I'll race you to the front next match 🤣

When he came on he played as if he had his hair straigteners down the front of his shorts.

New Brentford
I'm sure poor old Tarquin and Henrietta have never heard such foul language in their life

I am always careful not to swear but do enjoy digging opposition players out particularly after errors. I was down the front of E112 on Saturday providing constructive feedback to Kinsky after his match losing gaff for our second goal.

The day we can’t irrationally shout swear words at opposition players (and managers) is the final nail in the football coffin.
That day is is more or less here for me now. When one does does slip out i get filthy looks and i'm feeling more and more like Pavlov's dog by the day.

Only be prepared to say what you'd say in person. Juveniles hide in crowds.

Just a thought to those who enjoy vociferously slagging off opposition (often with children or others who have no wish to hear your bile), it may be better focusing your pent up energies on your own team.

And it is a total myth such somehow intimidates opposing players. It's the opposite.

It makes it less intimidating?
