Things Others Say About Brentford FC

Taylor was definitely the CF we saw as the replacement for Maupay. For a while it looked like it was happening and then it didn’t.
No one can say for certain how it would have turned out if we had signed him but it would struggle to better what we’ve got now.

What, win the Premier League and the FA Cup? I think you might be in a minority there.

Not if we end up in financial ruin and flying down the leagues, the leicester way

Leicester was hit by several problems near-simultaneously, with a number of them being very much out of their influence

Their beloved owner that really cared for the club died, and the heir being rather indifferent about it and seemed overly willing to blindly believe those he put in place, rather than actually getting involved, becoming somewhat of an absentee landlord, that just about just kept shovelled money into a hole without any checks and balances if they were actually spent wisely (AFAIK there've never been any accusation that the money have been landing in pockets they legally shouldn't, just old school budgetary mismanagement of the books)

Covid happened, which absolutely destroyed the owners financial ability to support the club since they made their fortune on Duty-free shops in Thai airports (to the point where Thai courts have taken over control and started reconstructing the company since they defaulted on debts, and one of the first things getting shut off was the money-pump leading from the company to Leicester)

They overspent on training facilities and beyond the window immediately following their success, they'd been quite poor at selling in time on the transfer market (even accounting for them beliving that they could become a buying club rather than a selling)

Legacy clubs like Birmingham might not be part of footballs future but they are a significant part of its history. You can understand their fans getting sore when their beloved club is obsolete.

Not a surprise considering who used to run the club. They have never recovered from the ownership of the dodgy trio. They will just have to be patient as many of us have been. West Ham may yet follow the same path. At least Birmingham still play in their own ground.

💯
As I said at the start of last season, how many other club's fanbases would have reacted like we did to the loss of Manager, Captain, Goalkeeper and top 2 scorers during the close season?!
Answer: None!!
In fact 90% of them would have gone into meltdown if just one of those things had happened.

While we (the fans) are lucky to have what we've currently got, the club equally (hopefully) need to appreciate how 'bought in' to the process we are.

Totally agree with your post, however, 15 years ago facing a move to Woking or Bankruptcy, more likely both. I would have bought into anything that offered even the slimmest chance of an escape from oblivion.

So thats what we want to emulate.
Got it 👍

Im not sure thats how MB and co want to do it.
And already seeing Brentford on the brink not long ago, i dont want to see it ecer again.

I’m in a minority here but I think Rooney’s comments were fine. It’s true that the first thing needed is to get the organisation he describes and that it can be done effectively by a competent coach without needing the players to be the very best. That’s the basic premise of how we attacked the problem of establishing and competing in the PL with a squad with barely an hour of PL experience between them.

The next step is to have players who can do more than “just” play that system and who have the quality to be more than just reactive to opponents and instead impose themselves to make the opponent have to react and be unable to do so because of that quality.

That’s pretty much also what we’ve had to work on over our time in the PL as we transitioned from 532 to 433. We had plenty of games in our first few seasons up where we struggled in the games where we had half or more of the possession to convert that into wins.

What Rooney has missed is that over that period we have improved the quality of our squad and the depth to which it is found so that we may now have that extra ability to use the dominance we are starting to get more regularly off the base of the organisational competence in pressing.

But that is something we are pretty early in the process of doing and while we as fans can see the depth and the quality of our players now giving us a lot who are capable of dominating, from the outside the evidence of it is too limited for it to be obvious to Rooney or others. We might even be overestimating it ourselves off the back of 4 great performances against weaker/less organised opponents.

I suspect Rooney’s comments set out the challenge Keith has set for himself in taking us up a level and that Phil has aligned with in recruiting to give us players of the quality to both organise and dominate. It’s good that nobody else thinks we’re the finished article in that project and even thinks as Rooney does that we can’t possibly do it.

As our performance before having the squad depth to attempt it properly was already 7-9th level, if we can move to more consistent dominance and unpredictability (what Keith has described as “chaos”) while opponents underestimate the possibility of it being within our capacities, I barely want to say out loud where it can have us targeting in league position and cup progression.

Good points.

Also, when presenting on the new SCR rules to fan reps earlier this year the PL’s finance guy gave a further interesting snippet. The PL has in fact been operating a shadow SCR regime with PL clubs’ finance teams for a while. Before each season they sit down with each club to review their budgeted revenue and spending.

Ahead of Leicester’s first relegation, Leicester budgeted on the basis of dropping by iirc 8 places (cf how the first couple of seasons up we budgeted on 20th and going out of the cups at the first instance- it didn’t mean that was our aspiration). At that point an established PL club dropping by more had never happened so it was as conservative a set of assumptions as you could imagine (I don’t think we still budget on 20th). So they worked on the basis that they could afford not to cash in on Tielemans, Barnes, Vardy, Maddison etc, didn’t need to break the bank to give them big raises to extend, and could rebuild the following season. That squad really ought to have had the quality to be very safe. They were a place out from those assumptions and it’s screwed them ever since.

Exactly my thoughts and with the start of big signings we're now making, we've entered that stage

Leicester were a perfect storm of the right people and right circumstances at the right time. I think for us to do something crazy - whatever that might be - we would still need a lot of luck and good timing though - as quality players will still get picked off regularly and we will remain a selling club. Maybe this is for another topic.

Leicester narrowly missed out on the CL twice under Brendan Rogers even before their unexpected relegation. Fine margins conspired against them in what they thought was a sensible model.

Not really. Two trophies and a couple of CL near misses.

But it shows how quickly fortunes can change. Bad luck, a couple of windows of poor recruitment and suddenly you find yourself unexpectedly struggling. Complacency is a killer and you can never assume you're "established" in this league. Equally you may think you're on a "pathway to the top" but it doesn't take that much for everything to fall apart.

Enjoy the good times while they last. You never know what's round the corner!

I had hoped that the - emulate and f*** over the "elite" clubs - line would be easily understood as referring to their success a decade ago rather than their more recent history, but if that is what you thought I meant, then hey ho, hell is other people.

Long live nominative determinism 😁

Several reasonable comments about us on WACCOE the Leeds forum saying it'll be a hard game and a good test - which it will be for us too - but always best to pick out the sassisst comment :

"Fair play to Brentford for winning one league game and hammering a champo team and been able to convince themselves they’ve had best start in premier league history."

I sort of get their point, to be fair…! We beat a team that has spent two years in 17th place and a Birmingham team who will be sacking their manager shortly (if their fans on Tuesday are anything to go by).

Elland Road is a proper test. Not won there since 2015? 2016 maybe? A long time. Wonder if sunday 14:00 helps us. Saturday evening would have been rabid.

Leeds have had a great start themselves. Two away wins. They, like us, look settled. Trafford looks a good buy.

And i will reflect in true Leeds fashion.

One away win with a scrappy 1-0 in the league, and a Cup win against a team soon to be back in the Champ and they think they are Champions of the world again.

Haven’t seen anyone from Brentford saying best start ever etc , what’s the **** on about ?

Self-reflecting their opinions of themselves onto others, as to make themselves believe that they aren't wildly overhyping themselves?

He's really painful to listen to, it's a constant struggle to get a sentence out.
What none of them ask themselves is...Why has he gone to Brentford? What are they doing or saying, that makes players want to join them?

Sangare has given them enough clues as have others.

Exactly. The player has a choice too, and we’ve demonstrated repeatedly that our culture is excellent for player development.

hey ho, hell is other people

Not every day you see Jean-Paul Sartre quoted on the GPG

Source of Sartre's especially famous phrase "Hell is other people" The play centers on a depiction of the afterlife in which three deceased characters are punished by being locked into a room together for eternity

...... .and made to listen to Talk Sport, presumably.

Times football podcast hit the nail on the head - Sangare chose Brentford because they know he will get game time, not because under unnecessary pressure and will be sold on when the timing is right for both parties……

Versus Man U where he’s expected to work miracles and will be binned if he’s not.

And equally important, a development plan was presented to him that showed how he could be improved.....which if met, almost guarantees that future move.

I remember in 2005 when London was awarded the 2012 Olympics. It was the bid presentation from Seb Coe and team that finally edged London ahead of Paris.

A Brentford pitch to a player has the same effect. There has been a video of Bryan Mbeumo circulating this week where he discussed how we watched all of his Ligue 2 matches and knew all of his strengths and weaknesses.

The same would have happened with Sangare. Notwithstanding his excellent season we’d have pitched his strengths, weaknesses, how we will develop him, how he fits into the team, how we’re patient with developing players and what his end point might be.

The work of Phil Giles, Lee Dykes and everyone who pulls this detail together would have been exceptional. We can’t rely on being the biggest club in the world who can throw silly money at players whether they succeed or flop. It’s been said before: we can’t outspend clubs so we out-think them.

That’s why Sangare is a Brentford player.

Things Others Say About Brentford FC

Why are they discussing Sangare, it's been happening for years. Why was Bryan Mbuemo missed, even, and I hate to say it, Wissa or Watkins, or even a young Noorgard or Yanelt etc etc. It's the culture at Brentford, the willingness to take a calculated risk, the availability of data and the knowledge to process that data. Man Utd etc simply do not have the set up, the aptitude or the owners to take advantage.

Exactly this. Spurs had an excellent opportunity to do a top to bottom review of the clubs operations to learn what they were doing wrong and start afresh bringing in best practises etc. Did they do that, no, they sack the manager again and carry on splashing the cash in the same way they have done for the last xxx years, without success. You can lead a horse to water....

Its still happening.......how many clubs would Matti J (in the last year of his contract) improve. I know he is 30 but it seems shocking to me that no one came in with an offer that was financially really tempting for him

It's got to be the desperate need that United had/have for quality midfielders and the immediate impact Sangaré had on his first start.

Haha yes you beat me to it.
If we're declaring a rampant 3-0 win against moneybags Spurs (tipped for top 6 by some) as "only" a win against a team that came 17th twice, nobody should be giving them much credit for two wins against a chaos club that came 16th and then sold one of their key players.
It was a besotted article yesterday
Im not even sure it's that. If we get praise in the media generally - which we did last week - people that don't like it immediately declare we've been over praised or we're "media darlings", as though the press pack is full of ex brentford players or loyalists ...hardly...

If we have a winning run soon we'll be told we thought we over celebrated or we thought we'd nailed a CL spot in October... All just typical football fan chat especially in the social media era.
