Ill advised maybe but I don't think he's a tool. Like many on here, I didn't appreciate the way he conducted himself in the game at the Gtech (I'll give him some leeway for the celebration at Villa Park because it was his first goal in ages) but I think that intrinsically he's a good guy.

A former work colleague of mine was his cousin. We would often chat about Ollie and his career. Sadly, Ant passed away last year. Ollie turned up at the funeral and, to quote a family friend on Facebook, "Thank you to your lovely cousin for making two very sad little boys smile again yesterday".

Let's just remember that he's only 30 years old. I'm sure that, if we're being honest, we all did some things back then that we now regret.

That's a very sweet story about the funeral, and I'm sure in the years to come those two boys will remeber that day just as vividly.

I completely understand that the majority of us will simply never know a player's true persona, the person behind the player, as Ant will have.

But whilst Ollie, as you said, is still a relatively young man, he's also a young man in one of the world's most enviable positions. A position he has got to through a combination of his own hard work and perseverance, and the football pyramid that took a chance on him, as it take a chance on every young player that dreams of the heights Ollie has reached.

There are very few jobs in the world, where if you make yourself unavailable to perform it, you will not only still be employed but acutally go on to better things. (of course there are a multitude of circumstances that make many of us unable to work as we would want to, mental health, physical well being, so much).

The reason Ollie's actions cannot be condoned, is because it has become far too common for players to hold their clubs to ransom. Villa will receive £51m for him, only one million more than Forest paid for Delap.

So as far as I'm concerned, I only see one loser in this, and once again it is not the player. I'm sure Ollie speaks from the heart when he says "this is not how he intended to end his time at Villa". But hey, he got what he wanted didn't he? Can't say the same though for all those Villa fans though

I doubt that he will regret it. He has made a few million pounds out of this move. His regret would have been much greater if he hadn’t.

Yep. The focus in Exeter is on the 'solidarity' payment. Fans' calculation match those in the posts above - that's approx £2m to Exeter 500k to Brentford.

Solidarity is 5% of the fee ie approx £2.5m. That is then split between the clubs where the player was trained between ages 12 - 23, with a slightly heavier weighting toward the later years. Ollie joined Brentford at 21 years and 6 months. So it's broadly an 80/20 split.

As a consequence Exeter fans have recently focussed on this £2m rather than whether Brentford have a sell on clause in the deal with Villa. If there is a Brentford-Villa sell on clause of 15% of profit - ie £2.7m to Brentford,of which Exeter would get 400k.

The total paid to Exeter for Watkins was already a League Two record. This brings the total to around £8.5m (1.8m up front + 4.6m sell on + 2m solidarity). We desperately need every penny at present (long story) and this is a lifeline.

I cannot blame him one bit for doing whatever he did to get this move. Most people would crawl over broken glass to obtain that sort of dosh. My contempt is not on Watkins, but on those who attempted to prevent him going. I know he is not a poor man, nevertheless, he will be a long time retired.

Oh come on............. If hes been at all sensible with his money to date he will have lifetimes worth of cash to see him through.

Lets not make out that he needs this move to pay his bills and grocery's for when hes hung his boots up.

Probably picks up an average annual salary in a couple of days atm.

He stands to earn £20 million per year tax free can you honestly say that you would humbly allow that opportunity to pass you by? Not only would you never have to work again, but neither would your Grand Children. All your family could be living in luxury, but Grand Dad turned the opportunity down to placate a few fans many of who have now forgotten his name.

But i struggle with saying it is needed. He will be awash with cash................ Yes this now means he can wash his a**e with £50s.

People have families. I think most of us would love to be able to support our parents, children, brothers, sisters and their kids.

He may be a footballer that's wealthy but he is human like the rest of us.

This repeated expectation for footballers to be turning down 4x or 5x salary offers is simply unreasonable. It is also often accompanied by an unfortunate presumption that anyone who pursues more money is simply greedy. We have absolutely no knowledge of what is in their mind and what truly motivates them. The kinds of sums these players are paid could easily see them live, outwardly, exceptionally lavish lifestyles whilst siultaneously channelling most of their wealth into charitable or causes which we have no means of knowing about.

I'm not suggesting this is the case in any particular example, and even if it is none, it is still unreasonable to hold them to an unbalanced standard. Teams operate as player traders, and the suggestion that a player should be blindly loyal to a team because they have been their employer up to that point is not sensible.

Just a thought, wouldn't it be nice if he made a generous personal contribution to recognise what Exeter FC did for him in his early years to start him on the road to stardom and wealth, after all he will be earning a reported £60 million in tax free wages over 3 years, even after taking care of his family for life he will have more than enough left,

Nowhere did I say he needed it. I said he was a long time retired. He only has one chance at it. Blink and he will probably miss out on it forever.

That's right. Most of the £4m/15% from the 2020 Brentford-Villa sale went on a much needed training ground building. Sadly in more recent years (as Hullbee suggests) there was overspending, lack of financial controls, CEO sacked, Club Chair resigned etc. Trying to get back on an even keel now.

Here's a timelapse video of the modular new training ground building being erected... a fabulous facility...that's where the money went (for nerds like me only!)

Which he has earned for them with his performances. If he played crap, they wouldn’t have received any cash. Expecting him to dip his hand into his own pocket as well seems excessive. All parties have already been very well rewarded for their roles in his career.

Can you imagine changing jobs a few times in your career and being asked to pay some money to someone that employed you when you were 18 despite them somehow made £9m off the back of you? Crazy thinking.

I don't think I wrote "being asked to pay some money" as against me saying making a personal contribution, there is a difference.
