Yeah, article in The Athletic (paywalled) states that he was one of a whole group of footballers who were persuaded to "invest" in a government tax incentive scheme designed to boost the UK film industry in the 90's/00's. Except that some industry figures set up a lot of dodgy schemes which were solely designed to get tax breaks (i.e. not to make genuine, commercial films), which the Revenue later declared to be illegal. All of which was made worse by dodgy financial "advisers" latching on to footballers, even putting them into (otherwise valid) schemes in such a way as was never going to be legal either.

Except that some industry figures set up a lot of dodgy schemes which were solely designed to get tax breaks (i.e. not to make genuine, commercial films), which the Revenue later declared to be illegal. All of which was made worse by dodgy financial "advisers" latching on to footballers, even putting them into (otherwise valid) schemes in such a way as was never going to be legal either.

Former England international Murphy believes he lost roughly £5m. Meanwhile former Leeds striker [Rod] Wallace was declared bankrupt in 2024.
Tommy Johnson, Sean Davis and Craig Short are other members of the V11 group who have spoken publicly.
City of London Police opened an investigation into the case in 2018 and told the players they were "victims of crime".
But the case was later closed, with the force concluding there was "insufficient evidence to support a realistic prospect of conviction".

I think Davis had many demons in his life because of it. Doing window cleaning or something similar.
