I've managed to get in the odd COYB when I've called into his Radio London show. I also have photographic evidence of him in the company of myself, another GPGer and a ragtag of f***em & Brizzle City at the Green Man before one our early disappointing 'no shows' at the 1985 Freight Rover final. I will not display the photo as I think his privacy is sacrosanct.

Not at all. And the use of "agenda" is a bit strong.

Its a song that was relevant during our rise and when smashing QPR.

First season in the Prem was also ok. But its had its time, it makes us sound tinpot and IMO we are better then its narrative.

TF used it......................... But i suspect you wont hear KA use it.

OK it's come up in a few other threads.... there was some discussion about it in the QPR thread a while ago and others have felt strongly about it too. Somebody felt it "belonged" to the Brentford v QPR rivalry and didn't need to be sung everywhere in the PL, some thought TF using the line in interviews was cringeworthy, some just thought it sounds a bit small time and it might even put marquee players off signing for us!

I think it's OK as an underdog song and especially to rub it in when we are beating one of the big boys... but I don't miss it especially either. We're not going to stop being seen as a small club by most people either way.

Which is fine. But no reason why our fanbase cant begin to dream big and view ourselves as a club that is bigger then the rest of the league sees us.

Singing it or not, won't change the fact it's still a club that will be seen as small ground/fan base. To be fair, there is some data that supports that, and I'd still rather that label than the aristocratic deluded/entitled/posh other clubs think they deserve.

It's marketing in the end I guess, but find it hard to believe players will be rejecting moves because of it (and those would probably fail other criterias and policies, like the "no DH" ones)

The club obviously didn't think so when TF was using it in interviews or when they were printing in on merchandise to sell.

I can accept that perceptions change, after all we gave up singing "we're the Barcelona of the lower leagues".... the fun aspect of it is still valid in some of our minds though.

Moving on and being better now does not mean forget who you were, and probably still are.
The raise of the club was meteoric, and will definitely take longer than 4 or 5 years at the top-flight to solidify it and change that perception, specially in a very crowded geography like London, with a lot of competition, including half of the so called big6.
I think it also shows character and resilience, it's a chant that was initially used against the club, and now is used to mock the opposition.

The thing is we are no longer just anything let alone a bus stop. We are genuinely a top PL club and at the point where “teams like Brentford” is more often used to admonish other less well run and less high performing clubs than as a pejorative to dismiss us.

So while we should remember our history it no longer defines us to the wider world.

I believe you are right. From memory some years ago someone on a QPR site was having a rant about Brentford which ended up on GPG. If it wasn’t then I don’t know where I read, but he said….,….. and they are only a so and so Bus Stop in Hounslow. It would have been about 7 years ago.

It was the County Town of Middlesex after London took a great chunk of the county. County Court was off the Market place

Na.

The ra ras started singing it at us some time during the championship.
Then one night at theirs, they were singing it while the game was level, we took the lead and sang it back them, won the game and lauded it proper.
It was quality on the night, their reaction to it was priceless, thats where it should have stayed.
Never liked our use of it after that, and it has proper died a death since.

If we ever had any doubt about how far we've come just go over and have a peek at the LUFC forums. They are being very complimentary to us. Yes. Leeds. To us!!!! Brum were the same after we ripped them a new one last week.

While I will never forget our roots, and the 36 years or so I watched us before even the Championship (excluding 92-93), we've no reason to think that we are currently 'small' in terms of our ability and structure. Sure, we don't have the silverware (yet!) to show for our rapid rise but lets not kid ourselves that we are some poor little club that is hanging on to the coattails of our illustrious West london rivals. We've earned our right to sit at the top table and its time, in a typically sensible and modest Brentford way, to celebrate it. The Bus Stop is exactly the opposite...it was fun for a while but should be quietly retired to the chant Hall of Fame.

It’s longer than that…they were singing it at us when they beat us 3-2 IN Shepherd’s Bush over 10 years ago

It very much had its place when we were promoted and for the first few seasons thereafter. We were seen as one hit wonders soon expected to take our place back in the third division.

Time has moved on and we’re rightly talking about European football being possible. Being a bus stop in Hounslow no longer matches our status or ambition.

I agree with this but it has a bigger implication.

Namely, that there should be less resort to historic comparisons when supporters (particularly younger ones) are critical of current performances eg what are you moaning about, we are far better than we were against Torquay in 1983?

Dispensing with this chant is a sign expectations have changed and this is bound to affect evaluations of how the team is doing. Indeed, it is entirely reasonable for this to happen.
