Agreed, but if you watch the highlights, he is facing play when the cross is delivered, at which point the Sunderland player already has hold of him and I think that plays a part in him turning around.
That’s where Diouf is less likely to be bullied I guess.

He's a good player, but not a full back. We have players who are fit and specialised left backs. It's time to play Malick or Rico in that position and move Keano further forward to compete for a midfield slot.
Ironically west ham fans say he's a terrible defender ( Diouf)

Bring back the old days when holding was outlawed and you could tackle. It seems to be the reverse now.

You can't blame the Sunderland attacker for KLP having his arm wrapped around him throughout and pulling him back, if KLP had done a quick pull then faced him up it would have been fine, not a rugby tackle

If you are not facing the ball you are very open to giving a penalty away. I'm amazed coaches allow this type of defending you can see it in every game.
To be fair it’s probably a reaction to the amount of holding and pulling in the modern game. Needs to be totally eradicated, it’s a scourge.

As the season goes on and patterns begin to emerge, I could very much imagine KLP starting at LW in the toughest games e.g. Big 6 away, with Diouf at LB and Schade RW. A sort of evolution of the old Brentford way of going 5-3-2 against those sides, which thankfully Keith realised last season had outgrown its purpose.

We had the same situation with Rico, they are too small to compete aerially so they have to resort to blocking, but they are not alone in this.
That is not blocking what he did he wasn't watching the ball and if he did it probably would have over both of them. He was grappling therefore fouling totally different to blocking

I thought he was blocking (by holding) and agree he was not looking at the ball, by holding the guy he was blocking his movement

Blocking is using your body to stop the player getting to the ball. Using your arms is fouling.
So Isidor should have been pulled up for the foul before KLP reacted to it then again that useless lump in charge saw very little wrong in what they were doing for the whole 90 minutes

Stop with the chat about him being held. If he had faced up to the ball and used his body instead of wrapping his arms then it would have been defended better with no Pen. Or he would have been fouled.

He was at fault and the decision was the correct outcome. The winger was just smarter. KLP should have used his arms to block the winger not wrap them around him.

Quite agree, however, the Referee has to be even handed, what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Unfortunately many of our Referees fail to follow that maxim.

But in another world (if Brentford were the attacking team) the incident would have been treated as the forward “initiating contact” …

It doesnt really matter either way. What KLP did on saturday was give the referee a decision to make. Unfortunately once that happens your in the lap of the gods. Some you win, some you dont. One thing you cannot argue about was that KLP never looked at the ball, hopefully he will learn from that. I would like to see consistency throughout the season on this type of incident but its not going to happen, is it.

An experienced full back – like Rico – would've been facing the ball while backing into the attacker then falling forward as soon as he felt the contact. You see it all the time in every game.

You would like to think so but there are no guarantees. Players make stupid decisions all the time during games, often nothing negative comes of it. Gabriel one of the best defenders in the world made a couple of shall we say dubious decisions yesterday, but nothing came of it, on another day the referee would see fit to punish. Up until now KLP has been amazing at LB no doubt about it, and feeds into the way we now play which has evolved since Rico was first choice, but he is not perfect. We could easily be talking about Rico and the pen he conceeded last season against Sunderland away, just one of those things. It looks like MD will soon get his chance and hope he does well, but again he is not perfect. Think we just have to cut some slack to players who occassionally get it wrong, its going to happen whoever the player is.

I'd put it down to inexperience, not being a natural defender and not having the instincts of a defender, built up over years of experience. Entirely understandable, though.

Perhaps but Rico conceded a penalty at Sunderland at the start of last season for doing the same thing as KLP.

They have had a penalty every time we have played them!

Agree with your first point, experience obviously helps but does not guarantee stupid decisions are not made in the heat of the battle by any player.
