Think the biggest issue is that the people that moan about it just moan and nothing else.
If people dislike the idea of flags that’s absolutely fine, but why not suggest an alternative idea rather than slagging people off for at least trying something new?
Our atmosphere both home and away over the last few seasons has been quite comfortably one of the worst in the league. Whether or not you think flags are the answer, it’s clear something has to be done. We were playing for a first ever European qualification last season and yet massive games in the run in like Everton and Palace at home were dead silent for a lot of the game when the players needed us most.
Sunderland wasn’t amazing by any means, but it was still better than a lot of the games last season, and that’s despite swapping ends (which never helps) and a pretty poor performance, and the Spurs game was as loud as I’ve seen the Gtech outside Arsenal all those years ago.
Even besides the flags, some of the other small things being done are very helpful. For example at away games, making sure we put the family friendly section in the upper tier when we have multiple tiered away ends like Villa, City, Chelsea so that the quiet parts of our away end are further away from the pitch should be a great boost to our away atmosphere at those grounds.
As long as it’s not clappers, a drum, or an AI generated “anthem” like QPR, fair play to anyone who makes an effort.
