I'm not convinced a light tap on the arse warrants the same punishment as a two footed kick in the stomach. If Foden hadn't have reacted, the whole incident would have been passed off as handbags. Fernandes should have got a yellow in the circumstances though.
It was a pretty solid kick in the arse.
As has been said - what Fernandes did was very naughty and he knew exactly what he was doing, Foden was just stupid to react.

The Rat’s little tap was nowhere near the offence of two feet in the gut.

And I can’t stand Fernandes.

Painful to see uniteds use of Mbuemo. So deep and narrow!! The right back is often ahead of him when the ball goes does that side.

It’s unfair to characterise it as a ‘light tap.’ It was a kick and a deliberate kick at that.

We’re often told about the example being set to kids and grassroots clubs and about ‘what football expects.’

I expect to see a red card for a deliberate kick. Otherwise we’re telling kids that some kicking of your opponents is acceptable.

He kicked out at him after the ball had gone.

Tap or no tap thats a red if the Foden one is.

Fernandes knew what he was doing.

Obviously we'll see several angles of Foden's offence at HT, but I'm not sure it's fair to characterise that as a "two-footed kick in the stomach" either. He was obviously stupid to lash out, but it looked to me like he made glancing contact with the outside of his left boot (not full-on contact with both sets of studs). I'd be astonished if Fernandes was anywhere near as hurt as he was making out.

Cue the HT analysis to make me look stupid... 🤣

These are the thresholds. Imo Foden was correct (excessive force) Fernandes should have been yellow (reckless).

Careless: A normal foul with no extra card if it was just a misjudged attempt to play the ball.

Reckless: A yellow card (caution) if the player acted with total disregard for the danger to the opponent.

Using excessive force / Violent conduct: A red card (sending-off) if the kick endangers the safety of the player or involves brutality outside a normal challenge.

They have to stop these in game interviews.
The second half has started and they are still talking to Michael Carrick.

Its always a red card, i dont think anyone can contest that.
I think people are more pissed off that the protected rat got away with something.
Again.
I think if you look at the second half of that clip it’s extremely minor at best.
If it had been a forcible two footed lunge into his midriff then yeah a red all day long but the second ankle makes it questionable whether it’s even a card at all.

Did I not see BF intentionally kick Foden? That seems “outside a normal challenge”.

Kevin Schade did pretty much the same and if I recall, the reaction here was stupid boy, deserved red. Don't see any difference here.
I agree he was a stupid boy and put himself in danger of a red (especially in a derby game at OT). I just think it's a massive stretch to say he used (or attempted to use) excessive force or brutality. IMO it was petulant - a la Beckham in World Cup 98 - and I doubt Fernandes was even hurt.

No defence for Foden.
Also no defence for Fernandes except the fact he is a protected golden boy

Wasn't Fernandes offside though? And his obvious attempt to get to the ball was clearly "interfering with play". Don't understand that.

Well after the controversy over the red card we now have controversy over City’s goal !!! Yet another law that is totaly incomprehensible and would seem VAR just make it up as they go along !!!

Apparently Dorgu foot kept them onside

Utterly bizarre but Fernandes should have probably been sent off and if he had been United would have been pasted anyway. Not sure I like my matches being refereed on the balance of probabilities however.

Neville being obnoxious on comms. Why is acting as though the offside rule has changed overnight? Haaland was unquestionably onside, as the replays show. The only questionable element is whether Enzo was deemed to be interfering with the defender’s judgement/line of sight

I guess that’s part of the change to VAR, they apply all the details of the laws that no one really knew about. In the old days the lino flags and we all get on with it.

He threw himself at the ball which went past him by about 6 inches and he’s blocking the line of sight of the defender.

Plus the keeper has to alter his position to take into account what Enzo might do which undoubtedly impacts his positioning for the Haaland shot.

Old days system definitely better, even when wrong. I know VAR is meant to correct ‘obvious errors’. But it’s a dysfunctional monster now.

Exactly. It's impossible to make a sensible case that he wasn't interfering.
