Final Score Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

We let ourselves down with terrible finishing but the link play was excellent and we moved from back to front calmly and at times speedily. We were in control for the overwhelming majority of the game and the passing accuracy was back after Saturday’s poor performance on the ball.

Given the team selection we were always going to be vulnerable at set pieces but we got away with it.

Ajer and Schuster did well but Rico was superb. Damsgaard too was sharp on the ball and Carvalho flitted in and out of the game but took his goal well.

Wilson did what Wilson does and for all his frustrating Dango had two assists. Thiago was too tentative with his chance but that’s where I came in.

In and around the box we were profligate. Up to the final third I was impressed.

Good, fair summary! Lots of useful practice at breaking down a low block. We engineered some very good positions but then messed up the final pass or shot.

We made hard work of that but we got through and that's really all that matters in the end.
Good to see Fabio back in the team again, took his goal really well and beginning to like the look of Schuster

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

They had a goal disallowed, so did we; result was about right. Remember, lower league clubs often raise their game against Premier League opposition in these cup games, so we’ve avoided a slip on a banana skin scenario. Into the hat for the next round - that’s all that matters. Safe journey home all!
It was the Reading Bench wasn't it?

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

Personally I thought that was a meh performance and not entertaining at all.

Yeah cup result and through to the next round blah blah.

But IMO our use of the ball in the final third was terrible. Quick turn over and poor decision making.

Rico well played son.

Is football about
A: Performances
B: Results
C: Expectations
D: building for the future

?
Result was excellent. Not quite as good possibly as expectations, performance was sharper than the last two games and Reading got in to the game and made a match of it. Getting Fabio minutes is good for the future.

I was really happy with that. Cup games only one thing matters.
I also love Keith’s wild playing of players all out of position. With that in mind it would be foolish to expect perfection.

Dams looked well up for it. Yarmo looked like a machine. We would have loved seven goals for the bees but who cares. We won.
And.
We had as many fans there as Reading.

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

I enjoyed that. Players who needed minutes got them, we didn’t exert ourselves too much before Chelsea and a few players did themselves no harm at all, Michael especially who was much more like his old self. Igor just needs a goal, did a lot of good things whilst he was on.

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

Weird old game, at times we looked like we were going to run away with it but all our pressure led to an awful cross, a crap shot or one too many too clever passes and suddenly Reading had a corner and we looked vulnerable.

Second half we should have finished 3-4 more and out it to bed, but we didn’t

But we are through

Ref and lino were just peculiar, so many soft free kicks given to Reading but a few big ones given to us, and what was that throw in all about. He must have had about a minute in the end.

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

We couldn’t really handle their set pieces. Felt for Balcombe as he clearly just wasn’t up to dealing with balls into the box and we only had one CB on the pitch for most of the game. Paudie O’Connor could have had a hattrick.

Calculated risk with the team selection really as opposed to anything majorly concerning.

He’ll never say it but I think the players were clearly under instruction from KA not to go through the gears out there unless necessary. More of a be patient and pick your moments kind of game with the game coming on Friday. Thought the players were disciplined in that regard, and got the job done.

If you actually look at the chances we created it’s quite crazy that we only managed 2 goals. The real analysts amongst you will know that despite how it felt, (randomness, momentum in the game etc) that scoreline flattered Reading a bit.

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

We picked a team to conserve energy for Friday that should have had enough to get through and that's what happened. I thought we progressed the ball well without being incisive when we got to the final 3rd but didn't do it in long enough spells to put them out of the game.

For most of the game we tried a novel formation of a single centre midfielder which I doubt we will see often.

We always looked like conceding from a set piece and I thought the subs after the goal settled us down enough to see it out.

The answer in order is
B, A,D.
Expectation is the mother of disillusionment and the antithesis of D. Hope that helps.

I think most of that is right but I’d say we actually picked our moments well and were incisive just lacked a finish or bit of luck.

Dango missed a free header. KLP shot saved free at the back post. Thiago missed 1v1. Schuster goal ruled out the end. Dango/Kayode somehow falling over each other to score free at the back post and neither did. There were other moments.

Contrast that with Reading; everything was set pieces and shots from outside the box. We carved them apart quite a bit despite sitting in 3rd gear for most of it.

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

Did what we need to and really should have scored 4 or 5 with the chances in the 2nd half.

Positive is we came away unscathed and now into the 4th round again - decent draw hopefully at home and then looking towards latter stages where the starting team will look more like our league XI with nothing to fear.

I seriously hope Andrews gets the team in for shooting practice.... WOEFUL performance in front of the goal...
... this made me lol...'shooting practice'...havent heard that said since my days playing in the Surrey combination League late eighties..brilliant...no disrespect to you mate... seriously... just genuinely funny... and you're right btw... hope he does.

Ludicrous decision to disallow Schuster's header. He won it totally cleanly and then his momentum took him into the defender. I sometimes wonder if many refs have ever even played football.
Equally ludicrous decision to disallow theirs, to be fair.

Not sure Reading Council should be using their pothole budget to fix the Madejski pitch 🤷‍♀️IMG_4017.jpeg

Dango is starting to worry me

He rarely gives a 90 minute performance which in fairness he might not have to with Anthony around.

2 assists says he impacted the game.

I thought he made some good decisions today but in those moments his execution deserted him.

We need more from Igor, Anthony & Dango individually and more from them all collectively as a unit.
When that happens I think we will soar 🪁

We are doing all right but not quite clicking up front ✅

He did but it's not an offence to have your boot in the air.
It is in some circumstances. From Law 12:

“PLAYING IN A DANGEROUS MANNER

Playing in a dangerous manner is any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens injury to someone (including the player themself) and includes preventing a nearby opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury.

A scissors or bicycle kick is permissible provided that it is not dangerous to an opponent.”

The Reading player had his boot about 6 foot off the ground and Sangare quite obviously turns to stop his head from being kicked off. Ref has concluded that he either threatens injury to Sangare or prevents him playing the ball for fear of injury.

Ref got this one spot on.

I didn't see Sangare move his head to stop it being kicked off.

I've put the video on the GPG's twitter account so you (and others) can make up your own mindl

Think we are clutching here nate.

Reading fans should rightly be fuming. Cracking goal and nothing wring with it IMO.

Listening to the Beesotted pod now. Billy’s got a right mood on about the Bees fans last night - “too many tourists”. He also moaned about people wanting to sit in their own seats which is always a strange one to me.

Was it that bad?
