Final Score Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

Listening to the Beesotted pod now. Billy’s got a right mood on about the Bees fans last night - “too many tourists”. He also moaned about people wanting to sit in their own seats which is always a strange one to me.

Was it that bad?
Nothing wrong with wanting to see in your own seat IMHO

I am surprised that there were "too many tourirsts" for this fixture however

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

He rarely gives a 90 minute performance which in fairness he might not have to with Anthony around.

2 assists says he impacted the game.

I thought he made some good decisions today but in those moments his execution deserted him.

We need more from Igor, Anthony & Dango individually and more from them all collectively as a unit.
When that happens I think we will soar 🪁

We are doing all right but not quite clicking up front ✅
Not sure what to say make of Dango right now. As you say, pops up with 2 assists yet I thought his all round play was really poor. On one hand that seems like a positive; that he's impacting games even when playing poorly, but his form generally is a concern right now and he looks like he's feeling that himself.

I didn't see Sangare move his head to stop it being kicked off.

This isn't anything new. Overhead kick goals have always been disallowed when the boot is dangerously close to someone trying to head it. Some refs would have allowed it but many wouldn't. I genuinely think the disallowing of the Schuster goal is much more controversial. Nothing like a foul. No contact with the defender until after he's won the ball and even when there is contact it's just a normal coming together. The defender rolls around on the floor out of embarrassment and in the hope of conning a second-rate ref, not because he's genuinely hurt.

Was a strange listen, not sure you can bang on about entitled fans and at the same time claim you are entitled to sit wherever you like…

I heard him moaning about it after the game. I don't think it was that bad. He moaned about people coming in late, must not have realised the queues! Getting to the stadium 20mins before ko was early for us, still didn't get in til Reading's disallowed goal.
Didnt see many tourists, plenty of families but all supporting Brentford (may have been where we ended up more than anything though...). It was a bit of a strange atmosphere, but didn't agree with what I heard from him

You can see from the close up on the replay that Sangare turns himself away from the ball:

I genuinely don’t know why anyone thinks this shouldn’t have been disallowed. There is a clear threat of injury with a swinging boot that close to an opponents head. These are have been routinely given as indirect free kicks for as long as I can remember.

Not much of an atmosphere for a 5k away support but not unexpected. Got there very early but away end was very late filling up so must have been some queues out there.

I don’t think having the stand split in two helped the atmosphere.

Not for me Clive.

Dango is starting to worry me
I know what you mean.
Strange performance tonight in a stuttering start to the season.
In fairness, his pass for Carvalho’s goal was a thing of beauty. Absolute class.
But for the most part it seemed like he had his boots on the wrong feet. Not to mention the bullet header he missed.

I get more annoyed by people thinking they can sit/stand where they like and then abusing the stewards when they are told to move!!

Reading looked better in the highlights than when watching the actual match

I’d be very annoyed if that was disallowed. Don’t think it’s a foul. It’s also just generally accepted there is a higher bar for high foot when you score from a bicycle kick, you have to get someone in the face to disallow it. I don’t think nearly doing so should see a goal like that ruled out.

Generally accepted by who? The Laws are quite clear that contact is not necessary for an offence to be committed.

Not where I was. Saw a family I know and it was their first ever away after going to every home game at the GTech. Things like that

The problem when people move is you then you have to be confident enough to find a free spot and then have a row with someone else who wants to sit or in this case just actually stand where their seat is on their ticket and not everyone wants the hassle tbh. I moved when someone asked me to because their grandma couldn’t see and needed to sit and I had a better spot for that

Unlike quite a few others, I was weirdly entertained throughout! KA “round pegs and square holes” , or was it the other way round?
Dams and Fab were both a beautiful watch in full flow. Schuster coming on is starting to give me Ethan surpassing Jeanvier vibes. He and Anthony are looking excellent buys in the first few weeks of the season.
I’d love to know what goes on in our huddles..”remember, don’t score unless you have to/ too many/too often/unless there’s been 20 passes leading up to you. Remember too the Chelsea game, and don’t counter attack too quickly or too often. Diouf, shoot whenever you’re within 40 metres of the goal, to save our energy, and because you won’t get a b***ocking….”
Are the balls different in the League Cup? Did we not practice with them? I was trying to guess which row our next shot would be hitting in the second half. We were excellent with the ball on the floor. The second it had any air under it, we were the total opposite for most of the match.
Anyway, still unbeaten, and on to Chelski.

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

I seriously hope Andrews gets the team in for shooting practice.... WOEFUL performance in front of the goal...
Not to mention crossing practice. Extra sessions for KLP, Damsgaard and Diouf

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

In retrospect – and understandably – it was a very ponderous, disjointed performance against opponents who were prepared to put everything into it and whack it towards our goal at every opportunity. For us, there were moments of real quality and they delivered the goals, special mention to Carvalho in his first competitive match for a long time, but there was little organisation in the side, which I guess was due to a number playing out of position with no leadership, apart from Wilson making his thoughts known on occasion.

Still, we're through; objective achieved and some likely starters on Friday getting their minutes. It wouldn't surprise me to see Fábio getting on the pitch at some point.

Generally accepted by who mate?

Theres two different scenarios as far as I’m concerned ,

1. This one, where he’s surrounded by players and dangerously try’s an overhead kick despite the high possibility of kicking a player in the head
2. Wayne Rooney v Man City those years back, Garnacho v Everton etc, where there’s no risk to players around him when performing the bicycle kick

I think it would have been weird not to disallow it IMO

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

Because we’re BRENTFORD and Chelski are World Champions?
Yep. Possibly be thankful we don't play eight group matches in Europe. The big boys played more than fifty matches last season.

We had no choice but to virtually throw in the towel at Newcastle in 1/4 final two seasons ago as carrying too many serious injuries plus walking wounded.

I haven't listened to the Beesotted pod in a fair while but thought I'd check it out given the comments on here. I think they should take a look in the mirror regarding their comments about entitlement. If I've paid for a seat I expect to be able to go in my allocated seat and not have someone else in it just because they feel as though they should be there or they want a better view or whatever!

As for the game I thought we were mostly comfortable albeit we struggled with their physicality at set pieces. A product of the absences in defence. Should have won by more but got the job done.

The less said about the Football Shuttle and TFL after the game the better I think!

Spot on. I went with my Dad (nearly 80) and my 15 year old son. I bought three seats together because I want to sit with them, and I don't want to be scrabbling around looking for a different three because someone else fancies my seats. Weird logic...

Don't think I will be rushing back to Reading if we ever get drawn there again. Infrastructure surrounding the ground is totally incapable of dealing with the crowd even when it's half full!! Absolute omnishambles.

Well it’s just generally accepted isn’t it. Otherwise every single bicycle kick in the box would be ruled out, but they aren’t

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

I'd have said it was generally accepted that you can't overhead kick in a crowded penalty area
I thought at the time that Sangaré reacted, turning his back anticipating the boot coming in, and I assumed the referee saw that, too. Looking at the replays you can see it as well – dangerous play is dangerous play, you don't need to actually commit GBH.

This misses the point. A bicycle kick that threatens injury is dangerous play and is penalised.

Bicycle kicks that don’t threaten injury (ie Wayne Rooney v Man City) are not penalised.

If Sangare had tried to head the ball there was a very real risk of a serious head injury.

Indirect free kicks for high boots have been given since the year dot. I’m not sure why this is being discussed as if it is a rare occurrence.

Agreed. This conversation has come up before in other threads over recent seasons.

I think I summarised my view previously as if someone takes my allocated seat, then I let them off with it, I run the risk of then taking someone else's seat myself who is bothered about it and I'm either left in an argument or spending ages finding a spare/sh*t view seat.

Would have thought Billy and Co would "get it".

Indeed - this is how I feel about sitting (standing) in your allocated seat too. I was in a group of 6 and we turned up only a few mins before kick off after the queues getting in and 3 of our seats were occuppied. Said to one of the blokes that I think they're in our seats and he proceeded to educate us about that being how it worked at away games which we all really approeciated him taking them time out to do because it's something none of us have ever realised during the 30+ years we've been doing aways together  Ended up all just squeezing in as no one could arsed to go and find other seats which you're inevitably going to be asked to vacate (which we would generally agree to do if asked because we're not pillocks). I actually wouldn't mind a free-for-all approach of first come first served / sit where you like but those days are gone when we're filling up the majority of away ends and the hybrid apporach just creates hassle.

Well, Reading B 1 - Brentford B 2. Glass half-empty moments: Balcombe nowhere near as good as i had hoped he would be, Ouatarra very mediocre - had much higher hopes for him this season. Glass half-full: we are through after a predictably tough game against a side two divisions below us who were prepared to run all night and never let us have a moment on the ball to think. Onwards and upwards!

Balcombe command of box not great but he did make a couple of decent saves/blocks

Outarra not in great form but he did get two assists (one after an excellent "dummy" by Carvalho) and his back post header was a decent enough header (Kayode should have done better). The missed header in front of goal wasnt great though

Rico had a good game but Reading's aerial dominance showed why we tend to buy massive CBs these days

I do agree, I just think there is a little more leniency for a bicycle kick which is scored. Like Ronaldo v Juventus where he nearly boots the bloke in the face, granted Ronaldo gets special treatment. Anyway, didn't think the Reading goal should have been disallowed, very harsh, but nor should Schuster's, so evens.

With Chelsea on the horizon and two centre backs injured, Keith went with the unexpected Rico in central defence move. Along with Balcombe having a rare appearance and Diouf just starting his Brentford career it was clear that every set piece Reading had, there was trouble brewing as the defence lost key headers in the box, time after time. I think it was just a case of trying to get through this week and see where we are at after the international break. Thankfully apart from KLP and Ajer, players got a rest and hopefully no injuries too.
The 77 min subs made a real difference, for a game at 1-2 they really saw out the game and put Brentford on the front foot and a 3rd goal should have come. Reading were really restricted and in a cup tie where you might think they would build up momentum to try get an equaliser, the big guns turned it around, got the ball and drove forward making them defend rather than inviting pressure on Brentford.
Can see why the Reading fans were annoyed at the disallowed goal, and yes it might have been a different game at 1-1 but I think Keith might have brought on the key players earlier if it looked like we were going to lose the tie.

... this made me lol...'shooting practice'...havent heard that said since my days playing in the Surrey combination League late eighties..brilliant...no disrespect to you mate... seriously... just genuinely funny... and you're right btw... hope he does.
Lol, what do they call it nowadays?
Shooting technique?

Well whatever they call it nowadays... THEY NEED TO DO IT MORE 🤣🤣🤣

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

Weird old game, at times we looked like we were going to run away with it but all our pressure led to an awful cross, a crap shot or one too many too clever passes and suddenly Reading had a corner and we looked vulnerable.

Second half we should have finished 3-4 more and out it to bed, but we didn’t

But we are through

Ref and lino were just peculiar, so many soft free kicks given to Reading but a few big ones given to us, and what was that throw in all about. He must have had about a minute in the end.
That throw in was hilarious 🤣
He proper got the hump, threw the ball down then realised the ref was happy for him to take it again.... Surely it should've been our throw?

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

For what it is worth - my take on the game last night;

Thought Damsgaard was excellent and set the tempo.
Side looked disjointed - focus and prep has obviously been on Chelsea game and less on this one.
I thought Carvalho was anonymous.
Defence looked solid enough.
Dango drifts in and out of games - if he can't command a game like that then he will struggle. KLP got very fed up with him for not moving off the ball in the second half.

Yes,
funniest thing I've seen on a football pitch for years, acting like a petulant child, I thought the manager should have substituted him and sent him to bed without any supper, will no doubt get some grief at the next Reading training session.

As you enjoyed it so much, you might like to go back on 4th October( we’re not playing). A Town Centre cavalcade of 125 years of Reading buses (I think they were all in use last night)!

Reading 1 Brentford 2 (Wilson, Carvalho)

Not much of an atmosphere for a 5k away support but not unexpected. Got there very early but away end was very late filling up so must have been some queues out there.

We got to the park and ride at Mereoak at 6.55pm. There were very few buses and enormous queues. We didn't get to the ground itself until 7.45pm and immediately ran into chaos outside with no signage or instructions from stewards and consequently everybody just joining the one single queue. It was only because I went to find a steward that I discovered the gate for block GU1 was elsewhere, and completely free of queues that we were just about able to get in as the game kicked off. Those still outside at the back of the queue for the main away entrance must have got in very late and the hundreds who were still back at the park and ride waiting for more buses as we had left it probably missed the first half hour at least.

A bizarre start to the podcast, Billy slurring about ‘tourists’ who seemed to know all the old songs (Lasse Vibe etc). He often talks about ‘kicking football out of football’ when enjoying a match, but guess that only applies to him and his pals.
Appreciate the pod and all they’ve done for the club of course
