He sounded like he was calling her ‘Shebang’. I doubt that was correct, but at least he didn’t preface it with ‘full’, to make it worse! A little research reveals it’s Celtic fan, sports journalist and sometime Disney presenter, Shebahn (“it’s not Siobhan”) Aherne.

We’re now in our 6th PL season. Of course we’re able to spend more money on players. Its the result of our model that this goes further than it does at clubs like Everton who blew money on crap like Beto, Broja and Brennan Johnson.

He's quite right. Our squad has cost a significant amount to assemble. That fact tends to go unremarked by a lot of "experts" in the media that don't do any research. We're no longer a tinpot little outfit that recruits using green shield stamps.

Eventually the football world will wake up and see us for the middleweights that we are. But till then I'm quite happy to fly under the radar.

No we can't compete with the elite clubs on transfers but that isn't my point. We certainly can and do compete with everyone else. We've just spent around £100m on transfers. That's a lot more net spend than say Newcastle or Everton. The media underestimate the power in the transfer market that we can now exert. We aren't "little Brentford" any more. We're genuine middleweights.

Our weakness is that we can't compete as well on wages. But we still pay our key players very competitive wages even if others in the squad earn below the rates that their contemporaries at other clubs would get. In fact it's arguable that clubs like Everton over-pay average players to the detriment of their ability to compete in the transfer market. I suspect we have a somewhat smarter strategy in balancing wages and transfers.
