Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

£900m is a phenomenal amount. Wasn’t calling for it before but hard to see how any punishment other than relegation would be sufficient.

Also City finding out in the summer explains entirely why Pep left.

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

This example is why it needs to be the most serve punishment possible, outright blatant cheating.
... breaking the rules set out as agreed when they signed up to the PL... lying and effectively denying they broke said rules and agreement.....all trust gone.... sounds to me like the 'marriage' between the PL and MCFC could be heading for divorce.... but will the PL go through with it...or give MCFC a second chance.

I really think the whole City project is finished now. Despite all the money spent the fact is they are still not one of the big clubs really. Without all the fake inflated deals and investments they are just another provincial club on the level of a Forest or Birmingham City. They still don't have a fanbase anything like the size of the rest of the big six. How are they going to reclaim their place at the top table dealing with whatever punishments they get and playing by the rules? It is different to Juventus who were always going to come back. If they don't wriggle out of this then they are done.

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

Man City will appeal and appeal, have to make sure the punishment makes sense otherwise the appeal will be easy and a waste of time.

As others have said, proper scum behaviour (well if they didn't, i am :) ) - nothing more than explosion from the Prem for 3 years would fit IMO.
You can't just expel them as then someone further down the ladder will lose out by not being promoted or an extra team relegated

Richard Masters, Chief Executive of the Premier League, said: “The core decision establishes the facts of what happened at Manchester City during this period. It details how the club systematically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade.
Anything that effectively serves as only a single year punishment would be a massive kop out by the Premier League. By making this kind of statement they surely have to make the penalty extend over multiple seasons.

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

Such is the scale of that amount of disguised funds, the PL has now put itself in a position where anything other than a very harsh penalty doled out, would be hugely damaging to their reputation and credibility (which is wobbly at the best of times).

How far down the pyramid will they be pushed ?

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

Will the Prem League be able to relegate them? This is a huge amount of deception in their quest to achieve success and why has it taken so long. The only option is to give them a large points deduction to relegate them this season along with a transfer ban for a number of years.

I don’t envy the task of trying to decide an appropriate punishment.

This is cheating at an unprecedented scale.

Whatever penalty it is, I hope it is the maximum available. There can be no mitigation following the failure to cooperate.

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

Any punishment must be devastating enough to ensure that every club understands that the rewards of cheating are not worth the risk. It must be absolutely devastating. It should be such a strong punishment that in five years, I don't even think of manchester city when someone says 'manchester'.

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

Damning stuff. Imagine the punishment a so called small club would receive if they lied about evidence. Severe consequences needed or no credibility

Southampton were thrown out of the playoffs due to a man with a camera….

Man City….I’m not sure what an appropriate punishment would be.

Took them long enough to get here. Clearly there was a lot to untangle

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

The precedent for a starting point 6 points per year for an FFP/PSR breach, from the Everton and Forest cases. That tariff can move up or down based on whether you cooperated (Forest got a discount for cooperation), clearly City have done everything possible to aggravate the process.

They are under investigation for 9 years. Let's say non-cooperation turns 6 points into 8 points, which is probably a modest assumption given the number of charges around non-cooperation.

9 times 8 is 72 points before you get to the charges around off-books payments to players.

The scale of it is well beyond anything else like this and I would expect the punishment to fit that scale. if it doesn't I will be keen to know why.
You may have changed your mind with the latest statement release but the sporting sanction offences do seem to boil down to 9 lots of severe FFP breaking with non-cooperation.

Just to add that following the Everton precedent, there'd be a yearly double jeopardy reduction, which was 1 point in their case

Not necessarily. Assume for a minute they end up in League 2....there will be an extra place in the PL to fill, causing an extra place to fill in the Championship, then an extra place to fill in League One

Could be QPR's best chance of promotion in years!

Exactly because of the headache of trying to figure out how to get an extra promoted team as a one-off, I'm inclined to believe that if it is a forced relegation, how-ever far, it would result in a relegation spot less

....so the PL would have to work out just how many points they are to be deducted so as to ensure relegation...ie they would be relegated even if they won every game from now till the end of the season...so therefore no incentive to win games... but still have to participate and fullfil remaining fixtures...I might be going mad...but how would that work.

On second thoughts, there’s nothing to see here. Carry on as you were.

Some chat on 5 Live about how PL and EFL might work together on a punishment. Don’t think they get away with just going down to the Championship by default.

There’s some precedent there regarding Leicester City

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

To put that sum into context in disciplinary terms Everton were docked 6 points (reduced from 10 on appeal) for an FFP overspend of £19m.........
So if we're going with the £830million overspend number... City should be looking at something around a 250 point deduction.

The Premier League will no doubt bottle it, but by their own precedent, they should be docking enough to comfortably see them relegated and carry over into subsequent seasons.

Any negative points at end of season added on to the following season until they manage zero or better

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

I’m not sure that a points deduction is severe enough. It should be outright expulsion from the PL, a massive fine payable to the pyramid and the owners blacklisted.
City would then have to apply to the EFL. if successful I understand that if accepted they’d join L2 unless a majority of teams let them come in higher. And I can’t see many championship clubs voting to have them in the promotion race.
That would guarantee at least a three year wait for PL football, and without their billionaire owners and elite players there is no guarantee that they could get back to back promotions anyway.
I feel sorry for the older City fans. Probably a fair chance their club will end up bankrupt…

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

As I said on Saturday you cannot overestimate the scale of this and the stakes just couldn't be higher.
City's continued insistence of their innocence in the face of such seemingly compelling evidence is risking everything if they eventually lose the appeal. The sanctions will be unprecedented.

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

The thing is...what recourse to legal do City have? How much can the PL afford to take, considering the fact City will throw everything at it legally...how can they give a satisfactory sanction and still remain solvent is the problem?

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

Incidentally I don’t believe the PL has any rights to impose a points deduction on City once they've dropped to the EFL. They could agree a reciprocal agreement, but then that could be legally challenged by City and there is no way the EFL would want that fight.

Mancini reportedly said yesterday that the double contract was “not his concern.” Surely if it was his contract (or one of!) he must have signed it. So was he complicit?

Plenty of speculation that Pep knew / was told this was coming so decided to flee. Was Maresca told any of this before signing? He could be managing them in L1 or L2 quite soon.

From what I understand they can only challenge the impartiality or process of the independent panel. Not the actual decision. They have to demonstrate that the whole investigation was flawed.
City keep mentioning their irrefutable evidence but if this actually exists, wouldn’t this have been better utilised during the hearing itself.

Could the Premier League refuse to accept them in the League for the next 10 years regardless of whether they get promoted to it?

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

BBC Sport story says: The sham commercial deals were described as being part of a "disguised funding scheme" to the scale of £830.69m.
Unbelievable scale of cheating. I think there's a moral case of them losing all that money and being relegated to League Two.
Not saying that's going to happen but I do believe that as the scale of this becomes clearer they're looking at a huge and unprecedented punishment.
I agree. None of their ill gotten gains should stay on their balance sheet. They would be forced to sell all their players and have no way of replacing them. League 2 with no money sounds about right. It would take them years to work their way back to PL and even longer to be competitive.

Probably, but not sure the EFL would go along with that as it would diminish the championship

Yes, but the same owners could buy (say) Wrexham and get promoted via another vehicle.

There's political angle in this too. The UAE are one of the UK's allies in many ways. Calling them cheats etc. is probably not a good look when the govt are next trying to sell them some military hardware. Thems are the dangers of letting nation states own clubs in the PL.

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

Do they fail the fit and proper tests owners now? Does fhat mean they are forced to sell?
and that's kinda my point. How can the UK say that one of its close allies is not fit to own a football club?

True
Burnham will have to try to separate the football from
politics
It’s going to need some deft diplomacy as he needs to look independent to the ruling otherwise the football loving Everton fan is going to look like a stooge of the sheikh

.... what would be the best outcome for BFC regarding this matter... maybe that's the question.

Personally I think a quick and swift punishment that doesn’t drag on for years is best for us and the league

We are where we are due to the owner and a football pyramid that rewards us massively due to the television money - we cannot do with neither

So we need to get back to business as usual without city in the league and protect the premier league brand

City to be expelled, Haaland goes on record on how much he enjoys playing at the Gtech and calls PG…

Manchester City Found Guilty Of FFP Breaches

Considered and proportionate from Wayne Rooney:

"I'd put them in the lowest league they can go in and then put restrictions on them in terms of how much money they can spend for the next three or four seasons.

"If you're just putting them in the Championship, and I get that's a massive punishment, they're going to come back up. Where, I feel if they have got restrictions... League Two, whatever... that could be very difficult for them.”

This guy is completely deluded.

"The PL's case is a single false accusation". No mate there's 114 of them

"irrefutable evidence has been put forward to the PL commission.". No mate, it's can't be "irrefutable evidence" as it's be refuted.

"it's a conspiracy therory" - No mate, did you not read the emails?

He actually thinks that he has been found guilty in a biased court and that an "independent" body will find them non-guilty just like last time. The only reason they got away with the UEFA case was the "statute of limitations" in that the case was filed too late.

He then threatens to sue everyone.

This guy is an utter moran.
