Things Others Say About Brentford FC

Interesting that Jon Varney said success on the field and a ground full of many enthusiastic spectators boosted TV coverage and hence income. Maybe the benefits of 10k more seats extend beyond matchday income in the cost-benefit equation.

... or not, if we don't fill then with noisy flag-wavers.

What if those 10,000 extra people aren't as enthusiastic, or aren't always there? TV seems to like the Gtech because it is lively possibly because we have an optimum number of passionate supporters and fewer tourists.

Is that true? Clubs with big stadiums, like spurs, can generate more from their stadium than from tv revenue. The two combined make a big difference when it comes to PSR. Otherwise why would so many PL clubs be investing in their stadiums? The question is will adding 10k seats and a few extra boxes to the gtech make a meaningful difference once you’ve accounted for build costs. I imagine not.
I think the calculation is a bit different for the biggest clubs. Spurs do very well out of commercial income now but even amongst that lot that is exceptional.

It makes less of a difference to whether Forest or Leeds can attract better/worse players than #teamslikebrentford. I am staggered by the money that Leeds and Palace are throwing at their new stands but they obviously think it's the right thing to do.

Yes. If you underline the words "full" and "enthusiastic" it becomes a good reason not to be expanding.

That was, of course, Matthew Benham’s response when questioned about reducing the size of the GTech. He reckoned it would be enough for hard-core supporters.
It’s interesting to ponder whether new supporters, rather than tourists or away infiltrators, would be more or less enthusiastic than old gits like me. It’s a similar argument to the TAPs question: balancing fans who went to Barrow with new members who now travel away.

Probably building new stands before the old ones are closed on H&S grounds.

Yes it is true. I'm not suggesting that TV money is always bigger than gate receipts - there are a few elite clubs where it is conceivable that's not the case - but it certainly is true that match day income is a much lower proportion of total income than it used to be. And that's true for every club.

Of course it is still worth investing in stadia. You want to maximise income even though other sources now assume greater prominence than before. And you want to accommodate more fans to improve the atmosphere and promote the club's long term commercial profile. Not to mention actually satisfying fans demand to see their team play.

That's not working out too well for them, as their recruitment is poor.
Didn't see too many other clubs trying to sign the players Tottenham did, in the summer, they bid a stupid amount that others thought f*** that, and just let them get on with it.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was designed specifically to support other sports (with retractable pitch) and to host other events (like grand-scale concerts) and, as well, for Spurs to play in. The original brief was: A sport and leisure destination for London with a multi-use stadium capable of staging major sporting and non-sporting events.

I'd guess the new ManUre stadium will be the same. That's vast sums of money 'invested' in a multi-purpose venue and, in truth, no way comparable with a stadium built for a single football club and its fans.

Long term it has to be an investment , lets say we stay in the prem for the next 10-15-20 yrs the club support will grow and regular crowds of 25k plus would not be unthinkable, look at Fulham now, one year we went there and had more fans than them for a league cup game , the cost of putting in 10k seats will be very expensive , but that cost is going to go up year after year .

Lifted from On The Pitch (credited to City AM) included in a piece on ManUre's shocking accounts, released today):
...
Among the outgoings was £63.5 million spent on land for their new 100,000-seater stadium. Building on it, however, is another matter.

A stadium for the 2030s

Planning documents from Trafford Council place the project in a delivery phase running from 2031 to 2035, according to City AM. The stadium is absent from phase one of the Trafford Wharfside masterplan, which covers 2025 to 2030, while phase two does not specify a completion year.

That is some way from where this began. When Sir Jim Ratcliffe announced in March 2025 that United would build a new stadium rather than redevelop Old Trafford, he suggested it could be completed within five years and pointed to 2030. That later became around 2032, as discussed by Collette Roche, chief executive of United's New Stadium Development. It is now a window that closes in 2035.

Funding for the project, which is expected to cost more than £2 billion, has yet to be secured.

Those build costs would never be recovered by additional ticket sales.

Matthew Benham said:
I can’t imagine a situation in which the additional investment needed to expand this stadium on this site will be financially justifiable

There are plenty of threads where potential ground expansion are discussed/dismissed. The most recent JV Q&A where he covers the subject and rail connections for Lionel Road threads are two such examples.

Please, for the love of Edmundo, let's try to keep things on topic....

People are just shooting the breeze because there's no football to discuss. I'm guilty too. Let's be merciful to occasional thread delinquents.

This thread is called "Things Others Say About Brentford FC" so that we can discuss things others say about Brentford FC. There is another thread on the GPG about the size of the Gtech and there's also one where we discuss large home crowds. This isn't difficult, or at least you wouldn't think so!

God, what garbage was unleashed when mobile phones and the Internet was put in the hands of morons. Once upon a time these people sat at the back of the class with macrame , now they parade their idiocy with pride.
Never got to an education level where an element of research was necessary to get your marks...

... as my old Chemistry master used to say in the 1960's "science is the art of knowing where to look things up".
