I wonder if Brooks has worked out how the ball defied the laws of physics for his penalty call. It seems a pretty big clue to me that if the ball goes backwards, there's a good chance the defender got it.

We need Refcam!

We were unfortunate today.
However, most objective people who watch football can see the Premier League is not a level playing field.
Refereeing standards are generally poor, game after game. Mistakes and actions are obsessively analysed in the media, VAR has destroyed the spontaneity of the sport for spectators and the regulatory authorities are held hostage to the big clubs wealth, influence and clout.
The experience for me is hardly satisfying and I don't really enjoy it.
Just my opinion.....
Good words! but big team bias by the referee is there for everyone to see !!! 🐝🐝

Not a chance that Liverpool were getting more than a point from this game if the sending off doesn't happen.

So they provoked an inexpeienced player into getting himself sent off.

Congratulations.

What heroes you are.

Perhaps one day, they'll reflect on this, and have a minutes silence!
Always hated them, and today reminded me why.
As I said in another thread, I loved seeing Man City rip them a new one last week.

Even after Yarmo’s f*** up I think we had enough chances to get a point or more out of that game. Fine margins between 10 man bees and Liverpool, which in itself has me pinching myself again. We kept looking for it, with total belief, I love this team. I would rather follow Brentford in the conference than be from Liverpool and have to try to find something to like about any of that pack of ****s.

In retrospect I award us the victory and the 3 points and all of Liverpool, which I will immediately cede to the Welsh.

At halftime I would have taken off Dango and Jaidon and replaced them Sangare and Kev. Almost right Keith.
That's what I thought at the time but on reflection it was Matty's first start after injury and I can see Keith might have been worried about his fitness level. Same as with Sepp later on.

He doesn't have to worry about fitness levels; they have all the numbers at their finger tips.

Pray for Jacquet and Munoz for speedy recoveries after the vicious headbutt from Yarmo and the bellend Munoz almost being choked to death before he scored. The Munoz immediate recovery was particularly remarkable (praise the lord), I thought the game would be suspended after seeing him on the floor unable to breath... Anyway.

Funnily enough I didn't think we were playing all that well until we scored. After the goal we were in complete control, especially when Szoboszlai went off injured. Yarmo's "headbutt" was a red card from one angle, not a red card from the other. Either way, don't allow the incompetent referees to have to make a decision, should be rule number one. In my mind, we were going to win that game with 11 men on the pitch.

I thought Liverpool were poor throughout if i'm honest. Even when we went down to 9 men it felt like we could still get something out of the game. I'm not surprised they buckled when playing Citeh last week with 10 men, there's fk all character in that squad now outside of Van Dijk. They're an average team with a tiny bit of quality who, again, I do believe we would have beaten with 11 players.

The referee was an utter disgrace. Has the standard dropped this season or has it/was it always this bad in the premier league? I'm sure I have a short memory, but some of the decisions from the ref today were completely biased. I'm actually not a "blame the ref" kinda guy but the last few games i've noticed some really poor behaviour on the pitch from the opposition and the ref's allowing it to happen. Gosh remember Sunderland? That was mental.

Dunno how to feel tbh after that, one thing I will say is I've been supporting Thiago all season through his poor form... but he looked like he lost a bit of self belief today himself. The crowd really got behind him from what I could hear, he so desperately needs a goal... he would have had 2 today in last seasons form without a shadow of a doubt.

I'd say one to forget, but if we forget these games then Ref's will continue being sub consciously biased towards the big teams. Yes it's been going on for years, but todays performance particularly irked me. I literally can't believe they only showed the ref one angle and the slowed down version for the red card, it defies belief and someone needs to be accountable, that may have cost us 3 points.

Hull wont be easy but i'll tell you what sounds fun, a midfield 3 of Sangare, Jensen and Damsgaard. We're gonna win 6-5!

Reminds me of the home game and how Connor Bradley was not sent off for what looked like a studs scrape on Toney. Toney made no fuss over it, nor when Robertson challenged him for an aerial ball in the area which may have been a foul.

Its hard to say what the issue is around referee decision making.

For instance, we benefited from VAR overturning the penalty because Outtara was deemed to get a touch.

I think exaggerating injuries should be booked for simulation if possible. But how could referees tell?
Laying prone for over a minute and then jumping up and celebrating with teammates as soon as a decision is given may be a bit of a giveaway

Terrible refereeing. Right there and couldn't see that the ball change it's path as well as McAllister throwing himself to the floor.
I really don't understand how VAR can only show one angle of Yarmo on Jacquet and he can change his mind. Once again he was looking right at it. Gabriel on Haaland is a clear headbutting action then. There just isn't any consistency in the decisions made with VAR
He's another crap ref in a gaggle of them in the Premier League.

I can't add anything substantial to what has been said here already. But this game was was another stark reminder why I can't enjoy modern football. It seems like cheaters get away with everything now. No honor, no self-respect, just desire to win at all costs even if you look like a clown in a process. Now I hate Liverpool again.
The trick is to writhe in agony on the deck until play is stopped. After the few minutes of attention-seeking has worn off, play is resumed. Another few minutes of disruption achieved. Job done.

Their overturned penalty. It's clear that he didn't see it well enough. He had two choices - not give a penalty and ask VAR to check or give a penalty. It is baffling that he chose the latter when he couldn't have been sure.

This is a great point 💯

If he is unsure then he can't give it.

If he's sure then he is an incompetent fool 👍

Ultimately the three big decisions were correct imo.

Yarmo & Janelt both deserved their cards and it wasn't a penalty.

I can't work out if VAR is affecting the quality of refereeing indirectly.

Were things worse before or better? I cant really remember excepting the Norwich away league cup game where the lino had a f***ing nightmare

Unfortunately I feel that VAR has changed the decision process for referees.

We often see most marginal decisions being given as a penalty, as the refs know that VAR can look at it. If it's an "obvious" error, it's overturned and VAR looks like the hero.

So for the sake of the refs reputation in the middle, they're giving these decisions to allow VAR an opportunity to "work". I feel before VAR referees aren't giving those decisions unless they're absolutely certain, as you have said.

Let's try to have two eyes rather than one when reflecting on a game. It obviously was a headbutt even if it wasn't forceful. Just stupid. Blame the player, not the ref. Janelt foul was blatant as their player was about to drive into the area. Again, stupid decision by our player. Janelt didn't influence the result but Yarmoliuk cost us the game. We kept going well and we defo wouldn't have lost with 11 on the pitch.
Thiago works hard but he had a stinker. Mystified that Wilson didn't replace him after we went behind.
This I don’t disagree with but there were clear 2nd bookable offences that Liverpool players made and not a hope they’d be given by Brooks

Brentford 1 (KLP) Liverpool 2

We were mugged that **** Jacquet got Yarmo sent off and Schade a yellow, difficult but we must find a way of dealing with this sort of player (cash and McGinn also)
That's the officials job too. The YY red card should at least have been viewed in context by the ref. Sure, it's a red. But in the build up to it both Jacquet and VD commit yellow card offences to incite YY. They should be getting booked too.

I can see that argument, but I would have given Matthi another 15 minutes or so. I hope the halftime switch doesn't indicate a relapse for our maestro. We have picked up a lot of injuries to key players already this season and the result yesterday was the product of this spate.

Agreed but what do you think the solution is? Sadly all I have is "if you can't beat them, join them" - and I don't want to see that from Brentford players.

It’s has to be
Until the premier league get a grip of this we have to
Otherwise we will be left behind
I don’t want just moral victories

Been back only about half an hour, thanks to a truck sideways across the M27. What a wonderful way to end a sh*te day. The scouser dive, the ref was very 50/50, and we were rubbish for nearly the whole game. It happens, doesn't mean I have to like it.
We weren’t rubbish at all, don’t be daft👍

What happened before they scored their first?I thought their weasley little right back received treatment on the pitch, but he didn’t have to go off. He then made a miraculous recovery to score moments later.
Kev pushed him in the chest. He went down holding his throat.

😂😂😂

Iraola thinks VAR was wrong to intervene for Dango playing the ball cleanly. What a throbber:

“I think the penalty situation, watching the replay, I watched it on the screen. It's clear. I think Dango [Ouattara] touches the ball. I don't think it's a penalty, but also I don’t think the VAR should intervene in those situations because there is clear contact after. I remember in the Nottingham Forest penalty against us this season, where they tell us it's not a penalty and the VAR is not going to intervene because there's contact.

So, I think it is a very similar situation, and I wouldn't call the penalty live. I think after watching the replay Dango arrives to touch the ball a little bit, but the way they explain to me the situation against Forest is exactly that one and I don't think the VAR should intervene.”

Reading this thread is at risk of making me feel crosser than I was about the match itself! Too much whinging about perceived injustices, when the fact is that we let indiscipline in the face of the opposition's wind-up tactics get the better of us. Yarmoliuk's red card was almost understandable given the provocation, but Janelt giving the ref the easiest decision he had all afternoon was plain irresponsible given we'd already lost one midfielder to suspension, and the game was pretty much already lost.

I can't remember the last time we blew a game so badly from being, perhaps a bit fortunately, ahead. Just one of those days that's best forgotten.

Janelt was already suspended through 5 yellows. Otherwise I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have commited that foul. He probably thought it was worth it to keep our slim hopes of getting something from the game alive.

Agree with the indiscipline sentiment but don’t think we were lucky to go ahead. As for Janelt, the first card was either unfortunate, if he was simply making a captain’s representations to the referee, or indisciplined if he said completely the wrong thing. We will probably never know. His second card, from where I was standing, looked like a last ditch effort to stop a third goal. He probably felt he had no choice, even though he would have known the consequence.

Whether or not the first yellow was soft, he still knew that another clear push in that position would see him off. I'd probably have applauded him if it had been to save us a point, but you'd need to be more of an optimist than me to see us pulling one back with four minutes of extra time to go.

Anyway, just one of those games and we're lucky we dont have many of them. A win next week and we're back in business.

Not sure about anyone else, but yesterday's game reminded me of our infamous Monday evening game in October 1979 at Griffin Park against, yes, Sheffield United, and the infamous referee Alf Grey. Both games were extremely controversial, with the same scorelines, and will live long in memory for years to come!

I could write a 5 page post about that Sheffield Utd game but don’t want to detract from the thread title ☹️

As bad and annoying that yesterday was I personally don’t think it comes close to that Alf Grey night

What a ****
Should be prosecuted.
That lands on anyone from that height there’s a material risk of serious injury.
It’s like the 🛎️ ends who chuck coins off high stuff despite it being obvious, to even a cretin, that it’s incredibly dangerous.
