London & South East, Premier Division
Sutton United vs Brentford
David Weir Leisure Centre, Sutton Arena
FT 1-1 (HT 1-1)
Frustrating afternoon. It’s always the case against a Lucy Clark side. Sutton have become a bit of a bogey side in recent years and she always seemingly rises Sutton against us and today they was no different. Good luck to them, they deserved their point and might feel unlucky they hadn’t claimed all 3.
That said, today was not just frustrating because of how Sutton played. The pitch, Carly’s set up and the officials all helped make it a frustrating afternoon all round.
It’s no excuse, if you want to be champions, you have to adapt to any pitch… but blimey what a lousy surface! Might be the worst since Rochester/Ebbsfleet last season. The grass was tufty with different lengths of grass across the pitch. There was no consistency regarding the play of the ball and the ball bounced up all over the place. There was a ball thrown out by Reeves-Priestly in the second half that must of hit a divot and turned like a Shane Warne googly. With our usual close interplay and sharp passes, it just wasn’t possible today. We had to resort to long balls over the top, just not our game and Sutton cut out most chances. We need to be better at a plan B, yes the pitch was dreadful…. But we struggled to come up with a play to bypass this.
Which brings us to our setup. Again we were set up too defensively. I appreciate it’s difficult getting all our talent into the squad, but again Kiszkis started on the bench and we played one up front. We just look light up front with Cheatley struggling up front on her own. She needs to play off someone. We looked so much better in the second half, but I don’t know why we don’t set up attacking to start with. What Wiktoria has done to upset Carly, who knows.
Whatever Wiktoria has done to be overlooked, Freya Worsley must have done something 10x worse. She must be one of our only regulars who cannot get a start. She comes on in the 85th minute, with barely a chance to make an impact. Today was a game perfect for her to unlock a difficult defence. It wasn’t Abbi Smith or Katie Gilligans day, and Rhian Cleverley in the defensive midfield role just doesn’t work. We had too many players playing out of position, and that responsibility has to sit with Carly. It was like we took today for granted and Carly played and tinkered with the side, and took the result for granted. That said, Carly cannot have expected our defence to play so poorly today. Makeba Black may have had her worse game in red & white today. We just weren’t with it.
Despite how strange our setup and play was today…. We were not helped by the officials today. A Lino who wasn’t fit enough to keep up with play and guessed decisions and a ref who gave some strange calls all afternoon. Don’t get me wrong, the result wasn’t because of the officials (although the disallowed goal was so baffling), but they helped add to the frustration of the day.
It’s another away game ticked, and we may look back as it being a point gained. Other sides are going to struggle coming to Sutton and that pitch. It’s just frustrating, because we can be so much better than today’s performance.
Good on Sutton players on the pitch, they did their job well and might be a bit disappointed they didn’t put away one of the chances to hit us on the break and take all three points. That said, as good as they were on the pitch…. The setup off the pitch was a shambles. Feel sorry for the Sutton fans if they have to put up with that week in week out. Compared with the lovely experience at Gander Lane last season, this was dreadful. Too many people in an unsafe balcony, when the ground has loads of empty spaces around it. “Stewarding” was a joke. Disabled attendees having to move every thirty seconds because the only seating was in the passage way. I actually felt unsafe in that stand. What a miserable place to watch football, and the most expensive we’ve come across this season too.
Back to FA Cup action next week. Talking of bogey sides, it’s against Dartford who got the better of us last year, so hope we can settle a few old scores and lay a few ghosts to bed. Great chance for a few to come down to see Honeycroft if you haven’t been.
