Hull City 1 - 1 Brentford (Ouattara)

Some “ interesting” posts today, we were not good, we battled, and got a point from a team that has an impressive home record and remain in the European positions.👍👍👍

Our season is not going to be defined by a trip up North in a hurricane!!

Hull City 1 - 1 Brentford (Ouattara)

8 games in, the team produce their worst 45 of the season, in the worst conditions of the season. It happens.

Kelleher at fault with a wrong decision in an away game v Hull, last time we played there our keeper Raya cost us a goal with an even worse decision, failing to trap a weak daisy cutter from their defenders punt forward, it happens.

it felt like Sheffield United Away a few seasons ago when we lost 1-0 away to a team that had little about them, but it didn’t happen.

We got a goal, we leave with what we started with, a point. Last week we played better and got none.

Could have got 3, might have got none and only lost once all season going into the last week of October, onto a distracted Sunderland midweek and a Forest looking at the trap door opening, this could end up being a very good week come Saturday night.

Hull City 1 - 1 Brentford (Ouattara)

Some ott criticism, which I understand if you were watching on the telly. Probably looked poor. Watching it at the MKM we were clearly the better team, conditions were pretty awful and a great leveller and we were a long way from home. But we never gave up and with a little more luck could have taken 3 points. I don’t think Hull are good enough to stay up but they are certainly well organised. Satisfied with the point in the end.

Hull City 1 - 1 Brentford (Ouattara)

I had a coach with an absolute rule that his goalkeepers never play the ball on the ground out in front of them against any kind of press. Best case, the player (Hickey), facing his own goal, plays it back to a now under pressure goalkeeper or to a back on their own end line. He’d rather he kick it out of touch.

Seems like every other week someone gives up a goal like we did today. Why do clubs ever allow a keeper to do this?

I have been saying this for 3-4 years, but I usually get ganged up on. “It doesn’t happen very often” and “we prefer to see football played this way even if it offered up the odd chance”

Personally, in my 59 years, I can’t remember a time that a style of football used by virtually everyone gave up so many golden chances in almost every game. If you don’t give one up, you were a hairs breadth away from it.

I am not against playing out from the back, but it is today’s goal that perfectly epitomises what I don’t want. The centre midfielder is running full pelt toward his own goal and the keeper drills it into his feet, he has 2 players on his heels, he doesn’t have time to take a touch, it has to be the perfect pass back to a keeper who is hugely under pressure or a drilled pass to the full back who has nowhere to go.

It was a goal kick, the ball is dead, we have a million options but the one we choose is the highest risk, lowest reward option,

I now expect the usual suspect to start telling us that people who know more about it are instructing them to do this so we shouldn’t’ question it.

Well, we can easily play out from a goal kick without committing harakiri like that, just stop playing it down the middle when the player has 2 players on him and is running toward you at full speed.

It is a recognised poor choice from the statistics. Same happened twice vs Liverpool too. I think the memo will be coming 🫣

Most baffling is that Andrews, a midfielder, thought a midfield with Hickey in it was better than one with Damsgaard.
Possible at moment Damsgaard not able to last 90 minutes and more effective from bench. Hickey in midfield probably better when we will have less of the ball.

I had a former teammate write me after the goal: “Can you imagine our Coach’s reaction if we’d done that?!?”

Today was a mistake, but aggravated by awful weather conditions and a pitch that was far from the besr. There were several long balls that ended nowhere and several short passes with similar result, or others that slipped under the foot.
All executed by professional players, of both teams.

You'll see from CK's thread that like most I'm delighted by what I've seen so far, but today had nothing to do with the pitch. It was a terrible choice of a pass.

Had it been a beautiful summer's day, I'd say the same thing. I love CK, but I never want to see that pass again, achieves nothing and risks everything

Yes, it was a bad choice, for sure. But I still think the wind and pitch should be considered as mitigating circumstances. Also the recipient, Hickey, I guess a more natural CDM would have dealt with the problem differently (maybe not, or course).

Not the best conditions to play football

Hull City 1 - 1 Brentford (Ouattara)

Yes, l would say that too. The grass looked longer and was watered twice on top of the recent storm. Definitely slower than normal imo
They use this pitch for rugby so I assume that’s why the grass is longer and the ball holds up a lot more plus those egg chasers really rough the pitch up!

Last time Hull F.C. (Rugby League) used the MKM Stadium was Saturday 29 August 2026: Hull 14-16 Warrington. New season doesn’t start until late February 2027.

Hull City 1 - 1 Brentford (Ouattara)

We got a draw against a team that is undefeated at home, in the middle of high winds, whilst not playing at our best until the last 25 minutes, and on a pitch that resembled the local council rubbish tip at times.

Apart from Kelleher’s stupid gift, they would not have scored

That result is an achievement, not a disappointment.

Undefeated to date, when we are allowed to keep 11 players on the pitch.

Only 1 yellow card in that game, which is very surprising nowadays.

Grass still looked long and pitch played "slow" though.

Hull City 1 - 1 Brentford (Ouattara)

A difficult away day. Far from perfect conditions both underfoot and in the air, I'm not all surprised that our natural passing game was not up to standard. That said I thought we battled well once we had more control in midfield and once again my MOTM was Ajer, for a very tall man he handled the tricky conditions really well. It was a long way to go in a day but I'm also satisfied with a point and happy to be talking about the game and not the officials for a change.
To end on a positive note Outtara is now our ninth different player to score in the EPL. Pretty remarkable after only eight games. Shows our all round attacking capabilities.

I was there and I still think the first half was poor, very disjointed. Second half we improved especially when Anthony came on. Sangare ran the show for a while second half and we could have won it. However our adventurous approach left us vulnerable to the break and they also could have snatched a winner (great get save by Kellerher) . As others have said a good battling point with a misfiring forward line.

Even Estudiantes hve given up the white sock malarkey.

Talking of the kits, not sure if it's been mentioned elsewhere, thought it was difficult at times to distinguish between players with both teams in 'similar' stripes.
(And also even the ball/balloons at the start!! So maybe it's just my eyes??!!)

Hull City 1 - 1 Brentford (Ouattara)

It is so difficult to judge when the weather was such a factor whether that be in over hitting crosses, judging the flight, hearing calls from your team mates etc. Having gifted a goal to them our resolve to stay in it and somehow get back on level terms shouldn't be underestimated. This game reminded me of Sheffield Utd away a couple of years ago when conditions were bad and we fell behind and couldn't get back into it. As Leeds and Sunderland showed, it's not easy to score when the ball is doing crazy things all over the pitch.

The white socks did not help as they clashed with their shorts…. Not sure why they changed them?

I had a former teammate write me after the goal: “Can you imagine our Coach’s reaction if we’d done that?!?”

Things have changed a bit, we were told never pass it across the goal in front of the keeper, now most of the. passes do exactly that. And whilst we are on it, we were told never ball watch, always watch and mark the player, now the rules state if you watch the player and not the ball its a penalty.

Hull City 1 - 1 Brentford (Ouattara)

Could easily have lost & not the best ......but some obvious mitigating circumstances ......suspenders x2 , jensen & Van recent returns , not sure if Sade fully fit ? , high winds ......

Think these remain good coaching rules.

I knew it was going to be a difficult game once we'd gifted them the pen, on that note, why didn't the ref check the encroachment into the area before pen was taken as the players were pointing out!
It reminded me of a league 1 game being played with 20 players stuck in the middle of the pitch. We didn't have any speed down either wing to get behind them with everyone looking like they'd run out of ideas! Hull are going to be difficult to break down at home as the defend very well putting more than one on each of our forwards whenever they got the ball.
That said I thought it was a good point gained as I didn't think we were going to get anything out of it!

I agree in regards to a point gained.

The old adage of two points dropped doesn’t really stand in the current day. We had just as much reason to go into the Liverpool game hoping for a win as we did yesterday. Anyone facing Man Utd will be, dare i say, expecting a win. Spurs beat Chelsea, we beat both already, drew to Villa, they beat City.

The timing at which you play teams have arguably never been as crucial as it is now

I had an eye test this week where they told me my distance vision was 20/20 - glad I did as I would be getting them tested otherwise, as from the very last row at the back behind the goal I really struggled at times to make out which team was doing what in a crowded penalty area at the far end

Yeah a friend of mine said the same thing whilst watching on TV but I can't say I found it that hard to differentiate from inside the ground

Very poor on TV. The times I have wished we played in red and white stripes away and haven't and yet yesterday we did when there was a clash (of sorts). Incidentally I am moaning as a viewer not saying it was necessarily a problem in the ground or on the pitch.

Second half we were dominant and had lots of dangerous moments, it was a good response. Hull dangerous on the break and fair play they battled hard, Belloumi is a player.

Hull City 1 - 1 Brentford (Ouattara)

Most baffling is that Andrews, a midfielder, thought a midfield with Hickey in it was better than one with Damsgaard.
The selection doesn't mean he thinks that at all, as that it obviously not the case. The midfield choice was predictable based on the fact Damsgaard and Jensen both recently returned from injury and at least one and possibly both weren't fit to play 90 mins. Plus two other likely starters in midfield were suspended. We won't see that midfield three starting again bar a hundred to one series of events.

Nah they are completely different players. Hickey has played in midfield as sub a few times recently and the possibility has been discussed for a long time.

He wanted someone that should put a few tackles a tackle in. If we'd started an away game with a midfield with no recognised defensive midfielder (Sangare is pretty attacking let's be fair) and got beaten, he would've been slaughtered for under-estimating Hull.

Hull City 1 - 1 Brentford (Ouattara)

It is what it is but if I set you a scenario for a game away at Hull in awful conditions at 2pm on a Sunday and asked who are your midfield three, I reckon 99% would have included Janelt AND Yarmo. To be without both hampered us massively, so to get out with a point, probably best to just erase the game from memory.

I'd have Janelt, Sangaré, Damsgaard (ignoring the fact I don't think Sangaré was particularly great yesterday) as imo those are our best three midfielders.
Personally I think we need to get those three playing regularly, building understanding, and only subbing in replacements when needed or to maintain fitness.
I realise there's all the mantra about needing/using a group etc but imo there's no substitute for settled units that build second-nature understanding.
Have the others ready to deputise when needed or to maintain freshness (Yarmo for Janelt/Sangaré and Jensen for Dams).

Yes I agree. Many (including me) would have had Hickey in the starting line up. The penalty incident was clearly not his fault (though I would say that Janelt is that much better at shielding the ball in the same situation) and unsettled his whole game. Hull were targeting him trying to get him sent off. There was an incident shortly after the penalty where McBurnie went down in a heap after running into Hickey. May have been intentional maybe not.
