Caoimhín Kelleher

Make no mistake, Caoimhín is up there with the best in the league. Only left Liverpool because the actual best goalkeeper was in his way.

I know people hate this but I'm pretty sure someone will come knocking very soon.
Agreed. And hopefully it will be Matthew Benham with an improved contract 👍

You know people hate this but thought ah eff it i'll say it anyway.I'm posting to confirm that your instinct was correct.
Thanks for bringing us down to earth after smashing Chelsea and the first time we've done them at home.;)

On the other hand at the moment we're a very attractive club to be at. Getting results, good atmosphere around the team and the fans, not subject to undue media scrutiny, living in a lovely part of London etc etc. There are lots of sideways moves but not many upwards ones to the handful of truly elite clubs.

There's also the Irish connection.

I don't think he'll be going to Chelsea 🤣

Is he the coolest keeper in the league? Nothing ever seems to faze him.

You have made a very astute point with your last sentence. There are only a limited amount of clubs who can afford our top players. That of course could also be a minus.

Caoimhín Kelleher

Just passed him on Richmond Hill out with wife and twins. Not training ?
From an interview with Ben Ryan, on a normal schedule of a full week of training the team generally have Wednesday as their intense training session with lighter work and team meetings on other days depending on the players’ fitness programme.

After that amazing double save on Saturday he deserves a day off as a reward!

Caoimhín Kelleher

Was up other end, so guess he had no chance with goals today. Made one excellent save in 2nd half.
But thought his distribution was really poor today.

Thought Liverpool just played us really well, including Kelleher- forced him into hasty decisions and poor passes. He made a couple of good saves though

Did anyone else notice Kelleher and Allison totally ignored each other at the end of the game, usually members of the goalkeepers union are all over each other at the final whistle. 🤔

Probably thought Allison was beneath his notice. Allison was absolute bobbins today. Know which keeper I'd rather have.

Like Van Dijk, felt the need to go from one end of the pitch to the other on more than one occasion to get in the ref's ear.
W***er.

Fading star. Needs to be noticed.

Held off posting as was interested to hear others’ opinion; but none seems forthcoming.
A microcosm of the team’s overall performance.
Some distinctly poor bits. The pass to Hickey and letting the ball roll under his foot but also saves that kept us in the game.
Wonder if he’s missing having Collins in front of him who is our most technically accomplished passing centre back?

...celtic...small c....put his celtic brother in hospital....with that pass...he knows it....never again Caoimhin:nono:

He's been nothing short of sublime. Has often made a string of crucial saves to keep us alive in games.

Unforunately, the modern day keeper seems to have it drilled into them to maintain possession to such a degree that this will likely happen to every keeper in the league at least once this season.

If I had to be picky, today wasn't the first time a ball has gone under his foot. In short, brilliant at the stuff that actually matters as a goalkeeper, but dont' spend too long deciding what to do with it

He's excellent

Fantastic with his feet.

Great at distribution.

Brilliant at saving shots.

However he has to cutout from his game "that pass". Raya was told the same IIRC.

Yes I remember a goal when Raya passed to Norgaard but I blamed Norgaard for calling for the ball. The outfield players could stop this by not making themselves available for the silly pass. Turn around with your back to the keeper.

More vocals from the other players as to where to pass it? For example popping it up the wing for Kevin or Dango, if not closely marked. CK has already proved able to do so. As with anything in football, mix it up to keep the opposition guessing.

They do it all the time generally to Janelt in that central position who lays it immediately sideways right or left.
I bet it’s the most intercepted or deflected pass that GK’s make - and best case it leaves the receiver no option other than firing a first-timer back to the goalkeeper or to one of the wingbacks in either corner while running full speed at his own goal. It’s true FAFO recklessness.

Kelleher made the wrong choice on this occasion and it is a tactic should be used sparingly when faced with a very aggressive high press, particularly in the prevailing weather conditions on Sunday. However it is a tactic that Arse use often, David "golden gloves" Raya has been caught out on many occasions, but I would assume their detailed analysis indicates that risk is worth taking as opposed to going long. It is a highly choreographed tactic, practiced intensively, which triggers movement that can defeat the press, bouncing the ball out to the players in a wide position or back to the keeper creating space in centre of midfield. If the press is passive then the player receiving the ball can turn and progress into midfield.

If even Raya and Arsenal are getting "caught out on many occasions", what are we doing? It strikes me as the sort of Pep-inspired suicide that cost Southampton their place in the PL. Let's say it costs us 5 goals and 5 points in a 38 game season (two points so far have been lost you could argue). That's probably the difference between 6th and 12th this year.

But….
How many points are gained from this approach?

It's a simple case of playing from the back or overplaying from the back.
That kind of pass is fine if you get it right every time and the player you're passing too doesn't have a man too close.
It's particularly dangerous as it's going to the central player, with no cover, compared to someone out wide.

However, having looked at the highlights, I think what actually might have happened is the ball gets bogged/slowed down before it gets to Hickey, and this is what catches out him and Kelleher. I've flicked back a few times and, to me, it looks like it slows down a bit more than it should just before, and around, the penalty spot.

Yes, I don't doubt this. It wasn't great conditions, especially first half with the wind in our face. But this tactic has no safety net. You short a pass to KLP out wide there's some chance of cover recovery. Not with this pass. If you know they're pressing don't do it - this is what they're goading you into attempting!

And in answer to boatmonkey above: none. Not one goal has come directly due to passing to an under pressure midfielder at the 18 facing his own goal.
