"Nicolas Jackson opens the scoring for Senegal, but Geny Catamo snatches an equalizer for Mozambique in the first half; in the second half, neither team creates clear-cut chances, and the match ends scoreless."

Interesting interpretation of the word 'scoreless'.

You think that's bad? Vavel's MBM commentary on Nigeria v Madagascar has just posted "THE GOALS WERE ON THE SUBSTANCES BENCH."
😳

His crosses from the left will be potent weapon this season. A last ditch interception prevented a Thiago tap in and on another Thiago was a toenail from getting a touch in front of goal.
The one to Thiago was a perfect ball. It's not a criticism of Thiago (thought he had a good game) but an elite striker anticipates that cross a split second earlier and scores.

Strange observation but I thought some of Diouf's throw ins were really poor today.

Great crosser, stil not sold he's better than our other options when it comes to defending but it's very early days and he's still young.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

Looks like we’ve found another gem!
We had when he was at Slavia Prague, but then he went to West Ham for the $$$ and we had to pay a premium; even though the right decision for his career was to sign for us in the first place.

I’d agree with this. We obviously believe we can improve him defensively and would have had this conversation with him and his agent before he signed.

Early signs are very encouraging though.

Was great today but correct me if I’m wrong does he look very one footed? Thinking back at Reading instead of passing with his weak foot he preferred to switch all his body to be able to pass a ball. Might have seen that today as well

See post #104 on this thread, not bad for a one footed player.

Promising signs, a lot to work with.

Positives-
-Brave, doesn't bottle a tackle
-Crossing ability looks mustard
-Good engine, lasted 90 mins + no problem

Negatives-
-Looks suspicious defensively at the minute
-Not the quickest
-Walking yellow card

Maybe not, he played a lot last year and might not have had he signed for us.

As we get bigger there’ll be plenty of players who’d be better off joining someone else for a bit for regular football before they join us. Same with Sangare and Thiago etc - all on our radar when at the clubs before the club we signed them from. It’s as we say whenever young players sign for the big clubs and can’t even get on the bench - they’d be better off signing for us and playing. That’ll be true for youngsters further down that pyramid.

As good as Lewis-Potter has been, it was so nice to see a left footed cross being whipped in from the left side. It reminded me a little of the deliveries that Reguilon put in at the same ground in that 3-3 game a few seasons back. Diouf put in a couple of beauties low and early that caused the Villa back line problems, one great stretch from Mings to deny a certain goal.

Gave us something different with his height and physicality, looks a very good signing.

Not the quickest ? I thought he was supposed to be quick ? The football games have him 2 kph slower than Kev

El Hadji Malick Diouf

He's still getting used to the way we play and his role in it – which is not being helped by the international break and our injuries. There were signs against Villa that he's getting there but still a few too many wild tackles, particularly the ones he mistimed, and more anticipation from our right side attacker, then he'll look much better.

Spot on, walked away thinking exactly that, plenty of positives, but also some things to be worked on. But I knew that would be the case with a player his age

not even top 10 ,last season

I'm not sure I really believe the accuracy of some of these speeds...
Do I think Thiago and Szobozlai have outpaced Kyle Walker, Brennan Johnson, etc?

Tonali right up near the top....along with the whole of Newcastle (or former Newcastle).

I'd like to see an average of their 5 fastest sprints as I think this may well be freaky or dodgy technology.

Will get a full run out against Sunderland and wouldn’t be surprised if he starts against Forest with KLP in that advanced midfield role.
Why would KLP start ahead of Damsgaard in centre mid ?

As for Diouf he's not shown anything to me that he's worth £40m in the albeit limited time I've seen him 🤷

El Hadji Malick Diouf

Think it’s easy to forget with the fee paid that he’s the second youngest player to play for us this season after Schuster. Only 21 years of age but still looks very capable when given a chance and of course has a fantastic delivery in his locker.

No doubt he’ll have an important part to play soon enough.

I suspect he'll start at left back against Sunderland, so full squad rotation in that position... but, against Florist, why on earth would we not revert to Lewis-Potter at left back... and why would he replace Jensen or Damsgaard?

Blimey. 1) fitness and effectiveness. 2) delicious crosses that will surely generate goals soon enough. And yes otherwise, he's settling in still :)

What would a left back, in about 100 minutes, need to have done to have justified £40m !!

The fact Rico is injured yet again is justification for me of what a decent signing this is

El Hadji Malick Diouf

The DOF’s have been outstanding for circa 10+ years. I totally trust any decision they make.

This lad’s signing has either a ‘lads night out’ decision or Keif, you can teach this outstanding attacking player to defend like you did with KLP (Yes, Thomas’s regime did a lot of the KLP work)

I really hope I look forward to loads of humble pie

Can people try and understand formations, in order for Keith to shoehorn Wilson in, a left winger was sacrificed. The idea being that Diouf dominates that space going forward, however, and this was the big issue tonight, it meant that Damsgaard had to help out defensively down that side, and he’s just not fit enough to do that, so some of the blame sits with Andrews for that decision.
The one massive clanger was the lazy header that cost us the first goal.

Terrible one to one defending for the second.

maybe instead of shoehorning wilson in, just replace thiago with him- He shouldn’t be unstoppable- but even if that’s the case, you can’t defend the sh*tshow he produced at the back

Agree if you go 442 then correct balance is essential that was major downfall and Sunderland best player was down that side

El Hadji Malick Diouf

Not great on all three goals and the keeper was awful for two of them.
On the third, Kayode was pulled out of position by Valda's ridiculous attempt to get the ball leaving the back post completely free.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

Defensively he's been less than convincing, however he has a mean cross and is incredibly fast. I don't see how he's better suited to fullback than on the wing.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

All of the goals the biggest reason we conceded is the keeper.

There’s a ropey header from Diouf early in the move for the first goal, and the ball bouncing the way it does for the second just happens to defenders from time to time, but none of these set up chances that they should really score from, against a good keeper.

Valdimarsson being a bag of sh*t is meaning Diouf’s getting a lot more stick than he would have with someone competent in the net.
